SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two additional suspects were arrested today in connection with a shooting that left a 20-year old man mortally wounded in a Bay Terraces-area neighborhood 16 months ago.Ethan Leland Apan, 28, and Kevin Herrera, 26, were jailed this afternoon on suspicion of taking part in the slaying of Joaquin Ruiz of San Diego, according to police.Another suspect, 26-year-old John Orozco, was taken into custody last Wednesday on suspicion of murder in the case, Lt. Andra Brown said Shortly after midnight on July 13, 2019, patrol officers responding to a report of a possible traffic accident found Ruiz unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body in a vehicle alongside the roadway in the 7000 block of Paradise Valley Road.Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not disclosed what led investigators to identify Apan, Herrera and Orozco as suspects in the case and have revealed no suspected motive for the slaying.``The District Attorney's Office is currently reviewing this case, which is still an ongoing investigation,'' Brown said. ``We will not be making any further comments or providing additional information at this time.'' 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cold-case murder shrouded in mystery for decades just led investigators across the country, straight to a San Diego man. In June of 1984, 15-year-old Reesa Trexler was found naked, raped and stabbed to death in her grandparents' home in Salisbury, outside Charlotte, N.C. For more than 35 years there were few answers. Last year, Trexler's younger sister, Jodie Laird, appeared on the Dr. Phil show to quash long-held speculation that she was the killer. On the show, she took and passed a polygraph test.RELATED: 40-year-old San Diego cold case solved with help of genealogical databaseThis week, an emotional scene unfolded for her and other family as Salisbury police announced the case was solved. The big break was DNA evidence uploaded to a public genealogy website, which pointed to a suspect. According to search warrants obtained by WBTV, the suspect was Curtis Edward Blair, who was still living in San Diego when he died of heart failure in 2004. His body was exhumed from his grave in North Carolina for DNA samples, before police closed the case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 29-year-old Cal Fire firefighter who died Monday after a training hike is being remembered. Yaroslav Katkov was hiking Sunday with his crew from Cal Fire / San Diego County Fire Station 16 in De Luz when he had a medical emergency, Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said. Katkov was flown to Temecula Valley Hospital in Riverside, where he died Monday morning. His cause of death was not specified. “On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our sincere condolences to CAL FIRE Firefighter Yaroslav Katkov’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. It’s the work of brave firefighters like Yaroslav that keep our communities safe, and we are deeply grateful for his service,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom and Porter ordered flags at the Capitol and Cal Fire facilities to be flown at half staff.Porter said Katkov joined Cal Fire as a seasonal firefighter in August 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog walk in South Park turned frantic as a couple tries to fend off a bee attack that didn't end when they got inside their home.Grape Street, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Patricia Young, her husband, and two dogs were near Marlton drive, just about done with their walk, when one of the dogs started sniffing a bush."All of a sudden I felt a really sharp stabbing in my arm. Then I heard buzzing near my eye and swatted at it. That’s when my husband started to get stung," said Young.Young says she didn’t see a swarm but heard a constant, loud buzzing."My husband is swatting and his glasses fall of. I pick them up, and he’s getting attacked ... Take my mask off and swing it around my back, and I get stung on my back," said Young.Young says her husband picked up one of the dogs, and they scrambled to get home, about 2 blocks away."We’re kind of yelping and squealing and swatting, and then get home, and it's that sense of, 'We’re safe,'" said Young,Not so fast. Inside the home, she found a bee on one of the dogs, and then one in the bathroom."When I came out to the kitchen, the bees were congregating in the light in the kitchen," said Young.In the end, they killed about eight bees. Their nine-year-old Maltese mix had to be treated by a veterinarian for a possible sting. Both Young and her husband stung several times"It's a freaky, terrible thing to be chased by bees into your home," said Young.Jeff Lutz, the owner of Bee Best Bee Removal, says a two-block chase is unusual, adding that "hot temperature can make bees more active," as they bring in water to keep the hive cool.It’s unclear if the bees were Africanized bees, which would require a DNA test to determine.Lutz says bee removal calls are down significantly this year but attributes that to the impact of COVID-19. 1812

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Symphony canceled the remainder of its 2020 season today as COVID-19-related closures drag on, with some performances canceled through May 2021.All Jacobs Masterworks concerts at Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center have been canceled through Dec. 31. In addition, all special concerts and all concerts in the Broadway at the Jacobs, Jazz at the Jacobs, Fox Film and Family concert series have been canceled through May 2021.As a result of the cancellations and to simplify the ticketing process, the company will automatically move any 2020/21 subscription into the 2021/22 season. Symphony staff plans to share details of the 2021/22 season programming in April 2021.``While our venues -- Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center, and The Shell -- remain closed, we continue to connect with our audiences and each other through a variety of digital programs and the sharing of socially distanced performances by our musicians on social media,'' a statement on the symphony's social media read.``Thank you for the incredible loyalty and support you have shown to the symphony during this challenging time.
