He lost contests in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada and was struggling to fundraise. Then, Biden scored a huge win in South Carolina on February 29, thanks in large part to endorsements and support from prominent black Democrats in the state. Following the South Carolina race, opponents Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar dropped out of the race and endorsed Biden. Biden was able to parlay his success in South Carolina into a massive Super Tuesday which catapulted the former vice president from underdog to favorite overnight. As the spread of COVID-19 forced Biden and opponent Bernie Sanders off the campaign trail, Sanders opted to drop out after the Wisconsin primary, leaving Biden standing alone.Biden will formally be nominated in August at the Democratic National Convention. The convention is slated to be held in Milwaukee, but it’s unknown if the coronavirus could interfere with having an in-person event. Biden issued the following statement late Friday:A little more than three months ago I stood on stage in South Carolina and told the American people that ours was a campaign for everyone who has been knocked down, counted out, and left behind. Jeffrey Epstein's death was an abrupt end to a life marked by wealth, power and years of sex crime allegations.But the multimillionaire's apparent suicide in a New York federal jail has spurred questions and myths about his death and the future of legal cases against him.Here's what we know about Epstein's final days, and what will happen now.Why was he recently in jail?Last month, federal prosecutors in New York unsealed an indictment that accused Epstein of paying girls as young as 14 to have sex with him at his Upper East Side home and at his estate in Palm Beach, Florida, between 2002 and 2005.Epstein faced similar accusations in Florida back in 2007, but signed a plea deal with prosecutors allowing him to avoid federal charges and plead guilty to lesser state prostitution charges.As he faced new charges, Epstein asked a judge last month to grant him bail and allow him to stay under house arrest in his Upper East Side mansion -- one of the biggest private homes in Manhattan.But the judge refused, and Epstein was held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center starting in July.Was Epstein on suicide watch when he died?No. Epstein was temporarily placed on a suicide watch after he was found in his jail cell July 23 with marks on his neck, a law enforcement source and a source familiar with the incident told CNN at the time.It wasn't clear whether those injuries, which were not serious, were self-inflicted or the result of an assault, the sources said. Epstein told authorities he had been beaten up and called a child predator, they said.After conducting daily psychological assessments, psychologists with the Bureau of Prisons took him off suicide watch at the end of July, according to a source familiar with the matter.Should he have stayed on suicide watch?Suicide watch usually lasts just one or two days, said Jack Donson, a former correctional treatment specialist for the Federal Bureau of Prisons."I've never seen in my entire career a suicide watch lasting more than a week," Donson said. "So the context of him committing suicide while on watch, that's just a fallacy."Donson said a suicide watch means an inmate is being monitored by a staff member 24 hours a day -- "three shifts of overtime people."He said resources are limited, and overtime can be costly."I was probably being paid 0, 0 for a shift of overtime just to watch somebody through a window," Donson said.If an inmate doesn't appear to be a threat to himself during suicide watch, he's removed from constant monitoring.But Democrats and Republicans alike wonder whether Epstein's suicide could have been prevented."It's ridiculous that he was taken off suicide watch," said former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is now an attorney for President Donald Trump.Democratic presidential candidates such as Sens. LARGO, Fla. — A Largo, Florida, man has been charged with murder after his 7-week-old daughter died after suffering multiple serious injuries while in his care. Anthony Suffoletto, 28, was arrested on March 5, 2019 and charged with murder in the first degree and aggravated child abuse. On February 28, 2019 at approximately 2:30 p.m., the child's biological mother left the 7-week-old infant in Suffoletto's care while she went to pick up an older sibling. During the time Suffoletto was left alone with his daughter, the infant stopped breathing. Suffoletto told detectives with the Largo Police Department that he woke up to the baby making a moaning sound and gasping for air and instead of calling 911 right away, he went upstairs to a bathroom with the infant and splashed cold and hot water on the baby. Suffoletto reportedly called the baby's mother at 3:12 p.m. to let her know about the child's breathing. The mother returned to the house at 3:20 p.m. and the mother called 911. The infant was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Doctors say the infant suffered a "violent event" with multiple serious injuries and an evaluation revealed that the infant suffered rib fractures, both left and right tibia fractures, a left femur fracture, subdural and subarachnoid hemorrhages and suffered multiple retinal hemorrhages, according to the arrest affidavit. Further examination revealed the infant's injuries were consistent with non-accidental trauma. Suffoletto and the child's mother told detectives that the baby was in good health before she left the house to pick up the older sibling. The mother told detectives that Suffoletto "commonly gets frustrated with the child due to the baby being fussy," according to the arrest affidavit. The arrest document lists Suffoletto's place of employment as The City of Clearwater. His job title is listed as Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator. The city says it is currently trying to serve him with termination paperwork, which has been signed by the city manager. 2057
