Major fires during three of the past four years have charred vineyards, burned down a historic winery and sent plumes of smoke above the neatly tended rows of vines that roll across the scenic hills. While the majority of vineyards, winemaking facilities and tasting rooms that lure tourists have escaped damage, the perception that the area is on fire yet again has not helped business. GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) — The man who killed four people and wounded two others in random stabbings across two Southern California cities is a gang member with a violent criminal record who had served time in prison, authorities said Thursday.Zachary Castaneda "could have injured or killed many other people" had he not been arrested Wednesday while carrying out attacks and robberies during the two-hour wave of violence that began in Garden Grove, the city's police Chief Tom DaRe said.It wasn't immediately known if Castaneda, 33, had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.Castaneda was taken into custody when he walked out of a convenience store in the neighboring city of Santa Ana, dropping a knife and a gun he had taken from a security guard he had just killed, police said. The suspect was covered in blood, DaRe said.Castaneda was kept in restraints as detectives tried to interview him, the chief said at a press conference."He remained violent with us through the night," DaRe said. "He never told us why he did this."Castaneda has a conviction for possession of meth for sale while armed with an assault rifle, DaRe said. Investigators were still putting together his entire criminal history, he said. He said he was told his father's roommate was killed in the apartment.A body was removed from the complex by stretcher Thursday.Erwin Hauprich said his father left Romania first for Germany and then the United States more than two decades ago. He said his father worked on an assembly line and lived in the complex for years.He said Helmuth Hauprich was a down-to-earth man who strove to make a life for his family.Police said surveillance cameras caught some of the carnage."We have video showing him attacking these people and conducting these murders," Whitney said.Whitney said the man lived in a Garden Grove apartment building where he stabbed two men during some kind of confrontation. Beltran, 45, followed him inside to offer help, but kept quiet when she saw him trying to open the cash register.She then ran out of the shop and yelled she was being robbed before taking refuge in a nearby dental office, she said. He ended up taking the entire register with him, which had about 0, she said."I saved myself because I was in the car," she said in Spanish on Thursday. "Thank God I am alive."The man also robbed an insurance business, where a 54-year-old employee was stabbed several times and was expected to survive.The woman "was very brave," Whitney said. FROSTPROOF, Fla. — The triple murder of three close friends is under investigation in Florida.The Polk County Sheriff's Office says around 10:06 p.m. on Friday, one victim, 27-year-old Rollins, called his dad for help. Officials say his dad knew Brandon had gone fishing with two of his friends, 30-year-old Keven Springfield and 23-year-old Damion Tillman, who were also victims. All were from Frostproof.Brandon's dad drove to the unincorporated area of Frostproof and when he arrived, he found his son barely alive, officials say. The other two friends were found dead.Brandon's dad drove to a close-by gas station to call 911.When first responders arrived, all three victims were found dead. Officials said they appeared to have been beaten and shot."This is a horrific scene. I've been to a lot of murder scenes in my life and this ranks among the worst I've been to," said Sheriff Grady Judd.According to families, the three men were best friends and knew each other for years. They said the three men were fishing on land, not in a boat."We are seeking leads. We need help so we can solve this crime sooner rather than later because there are one or more, we suspected more, murderers, that killed three people in a quiet community," said Sheriff Judd.The sheriff's office is asking for the public's help on any information on the incident. (AP) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are reviewing an encounter between a Border Patrol agent and two women who were speaking Spanish at a gas station in northern Montana, the agency said Monday.The women, who are U.S. citizens, said the agent detained them for about 35 minutes Wednesday in Havre, a small city about 30 miles from the U.S.-Canada border. One of the women, Ana Suda, asked the agent why he asked for their identifications."I recorded him admitting that he just stop(ped) us because we (were) speaking Spanish, no other reason," Suda wrote in a Facebook post published early Wednesday. "Remember do NOT speak Spanish sounds like is illegal."Neither Suda nor her friend, Mimi Hernandez, answered their cellphones or responded to text messages on Monday. In Suda's video of the encounter, posted by KRTV of Great Falls, the agent says speaking Spanish "is very unheard of up here."Customs and Border Protection spokesman Jason Givens declined to answer questions about the incident. He released a statement that said the incident is being reviewed to ensure that all appropriate policies were followed."Although most Border Patrol work is conducted in the immediate border area, agents have broad law enforcement authorities and are not limited to a specific geography within the United States," the statement said. "They have the authority to question individuals, make arrests, and take and consider evidence."Border Patrol agents are authorized by law to make warrantless stops within a "reasonable distance" from the border — defined as 100 miles (160 kilometers) under federal regulations. That broad authority has led to complaints of racial profiling by agents who board buses and trains and stop people at highway checkpoints.Havre, which has just under 10,000 residents and is near two Native American reservations, has a mostly white population, with just 4 percent Hispanic, according to the U.S. Census.It is typically a quiet posting for the Border Patrol.
