A mother and son have taken to social media in a fight against hate.Rose Gandarilla and her son, Ruben, started the #ElPasoChallenge on Twitter with a simple idea in mind: spread kindness during a time of hate and violence.Gandarilla, a school administrator, wrote on Twitter that her son came to her with an idea. An 18-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department has died after being involved in a shooting Wednesday on Detroit's west side."Today is a tragic day for the Detroit police family," Detroit Police Chief James Craig said while addressing media outside of Sinai-Grace Hospital. Two police officers from Detroit's 12th Precinct were shot when responding to a report of a home invasion.Craig said that once officers arrived on scene, occupants in the home began frantically running out of the home because of a suspect inside the home with a high-powered rifle.Additional officers were called and four total officers made entry into the home in search of the suspect. While clearing the top floor of the home, officers did not locate the suspect. As they were heading down the stairs of the home, the suspect began to open fire on the officers. One officer, a three-year veteran on the force, was shot in his left leg. An 18-year veteran on the force sustained a single gunshot wound to his neck. A study released Wednesday by the British Medical Journal claims that vegetarians could have a higher risk of a stroke than meat eaters.The study followed more than 48,000 participants in the UK for nearly 18 years. The study placed participants in three groups: Meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. The study claims that vegetarians were 20 percent more likely to have a stroke than meat eaters, which equaled to be three additional haemorrhagic stroke victims per 1,000 participants. Before you change your eating habits, you should know that meat eaters were more likely to develop a heart disease than vegetarians. The difference between meat eaters and vegetarians was 10 additional cases of heart disease per 1,000 participants. According to the British Medical Journal, previous studies on the correlation between a vegetarian diet and strokes only reported stroke mortality. In those studies, there was no significant difference between vegetarians and meat eaters in stroke mortality. The study did adjust for self reported high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and body mass index, which suggests that part of the associations might be attributed to these factors, it says."However, the lower risk in vegetarians and vegans remained marginally significant after adjustment for all of these factors," the study said.To read the full study, click 1389
Amazon customers no longer need to save their receipts or boxes if they need to return an item. Starting Monday, Amazon purchases can now be returned at all Kohl's locations nationwide. According to Kohl's, no receipt or box is needed in order to return items. Instead of a receipt, customers can now have a QR Code emailed to their account. A Kohl's representative will then scan the QR Code off of a cellphone and process the return. The program began as a pilot at 100 locations nationwide. The return program now encompasses 1,100 Kohl's locations nationwide. “The nationwide rollout of the Amazon Returns program is our single biggest initiative of the year,” said Michelle Gass, Kohl’s chief executive officer. “Our top strategic priority is driving traffic, and this transformational program does just that.
