AURORA, Colo. — When a fawn found itself in the basement foundation of a home under construction, it was firefighters to the rescue. On Sunday evening, residents in a southeast Aurora, Colorado neighborhood called on three of their neighbors, who happened to be off-duty members of South Metro Fire Rescue and the Thornton Fire Department, to rescue the young deer. When it was first lifted out of the basement foundation, it ran to the edge of the property and tried to squeeze through metal fencing, but couldn't fit. The firefighters gave the animal another boost over the fence and it bounded away, said a spokesperson with SMFR.  692

ATLANTA — Georgia’s top elections official says his office is investigating potential election law violations by groups working to register voters ahead of January's Senate runoffs. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger named four groups his office is specifically investigating: America Votes, Vote Forward, The New Georgia Project and Operation New Voter Registration Georgia. He says some groups are allegedly encouraging people outside the state to register to vote in January's Senate run-off election, according to The Hill. “We have opened an investigation into a group called America Votes, who is sending absentee ballot applications to people at addresses where they have not lived since 1994,” Raffensperger said Monday in announcing the investigations. America Votes responded to the accusations in a statement to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, saying they have mailed applications to those on the list of voters maintained by Raffensperger's office. The secretary is also punching back at claims that fraud has tainted the state’s presidential election. Raffensperger said dishonest actors are exploiting the emotions of many Trump supporters with fantastic claims and apparently misleading the president as well. He said during a news conference Monday that his office has 23 investigators probing 250 open cases alleging some kind of election law violation, but none of them cast doubt on the integrity of the state's election results. 1461

Attorneys for the family of Breonna Taylor have agreed to a million wrongful death settlement with the city of Louisville, Kentucky, officials said in a press conference Tuesday.According to Ben Crump, an attorney for the family of Breonna Taylor, the settlement was the largest sum paid out to the family of a Black woman killed during an interaction with a police officer.In the settlement, the Louisville Metro Police Department also agreed to make several policy changes. Those policy changes include:Requiring a commanding officer to approve search warrants before a judge approves them.Implementing an "early warning" system to detect unnecessary use of force among officers.Operational changes regarding officers placed on leave.Implementing a program that offers housing credits to police officers to encourage them to live in the city limits.Offering officers an extra two hours of paid time for community engagement.Expanded drug and alcohol testing within the department.Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said later that the city did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.Attorneys for Palmer's family thanked Fischer for his administration's work in reaching a settlement. But they also called on state officials to press ahead with charges against the police officers involved in the March 13 shooting that left her dead."It's time to move forward with the criminal charges," said Tamika Palmer, Breonna Taylor's mother.Ben Crump, an attorney representing Taylor's family and the families of victims several other high-profile police shootings, also called on Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron to charge the officers involved, saying the officers should be charged "immediately, this week."Thursday's presser closed with some in attendance shouting chants of "say her name" and "arrest the cops."The settlement is the result of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Taylor's family. Breonna Taylor was shot and killed when plain-clothes narcotics detectives entered her apartment to serve a warrant.Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, says he fired a "warning shot" at the officers, thinking they were intruders. Officers then responded by firing dozens of bullets, leaving Taylor dead.Walker was later arrested and charged after an officer was injured in the shooting. Charges against Walker were eventually dropped.Walker has maintained that while police did knock on the door prior to entering, officers did not identify themselves before attempting to enter Taylor's apartment. Some neighbors have also said that they did not hear police announce themselves before entering the residence.Taylor's death has already prompted a ban on "no-knock warrants" in Louisville. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, has also introduced a bill that would ban such warrants nationally.Taylor's death has been a flashpoint for protesters calling for an end of police brutality and systemic racism. Athletes and entertainers have publicly called for the arrest of the officers who were involved in the raid on Taylor's apartment.One officer involved in the shooting, Det. As Vietnam veterans grow older, the National Park Service said it has seen an increase in people leaving remains at the Veteran's Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., so it has now put up signs asking people to stop.Nancy Skinner wanted to honor her fiance Ron Looney after he died in 2008. When he died, Skinner had him cremated.Other than Looney's remains, photos were one of the few things she had left of Looney. The snapshots capture the motorcycle trips the couple took around the country, family get-togethers, and even Looney’s time in the Vietnam War.“He was over there five times,” recalled Skinner.Soon after his death, she took some of Looney's ashes and set out on one last adventure with him. “I went ahead and got what I thought would probably be the right amount if you cremated his heart, the right amount size,” said Skinner.She packed the ashes in a wooden box and drove from Mississippi to Washington, D.C., to leave Looney's cremains at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall.“It was something he so wanted to do, so wanted to be there. I knew that was something he would have wanted,” said Skinner.The National Park Service said Looney’s cremains are one of about 70 that have now been left at the wall over the years.“A lot of Vietnam veterans feel very connected to the memorial. It speaks to them in a way a lot of other places in the country don't,” said Janet Folkerts, a curator with the Park Service. “Cremains are kind of definitely more sensitive and something that needs a higher standard of care than we're really equipped to deal with here,” said Folkerts.The cremains left at the wall are currently brought to a Park Service building and kept in a metal storage cabinet. But Folkerts said the Park Service is looking into new options.“We’re hoping some veterans cemetery could help us with the cremains we already have and we could setup some system in the future,” she said.While Skinner said she understands the Park Service’s concerns, she hinted she would still have found a way to honor Looney’s wishes.“I made it a pretty little box. Astronomers looking at the atmosphere in neighboring Venus see something that might just be a sign of life.In a study published Monday, researchers from Cardiff University, MIT and elsewhere say they found the chemical signature of a noxious gas called phosphine.On Earth, phosphine is associated with life. It's found at the bottom of ponds, in badger guts and in penguin guano.Venus’ phosphine was observed in a narrow, temperate band within the planet’s atmospheres, where temperatures range from 30 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists have speculated that if life exists on Venus, this layer of the atmosphere, or cloud deck, is likely the only place where it would survive, according to MIT.“This phosphine signal is perfectly positioned where others have conjectured the area could be habitable,” said the study’s co-author and EAPS Research Scientist Janusz Petkowski.Astronomers tried to figure out other, non-biological ways it could be produced and came up empty.“It’s very hard to prove a negative,” said Clara Sousa-Silva, research scientist in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS). “Now, astronomers will think of all the ways to justify phosphine without life, and I welcome that. Please do, because we are at the end of our possibilities to show abiotic processes that can make phosphine.”Outside experts — and the study authors themselves — say the research is tantalizing but not yet convincing. 1454
