CALEXICO, Calif. -- High school seniors around the country are coping with missed milestones like prom and walking across the graduation stage. "Our students invested 12, 13 years in their education, so we must invest in something to give them back, a ceremony they can be proud of," said John Moreno, principal of Aurora High Continuation in Calexico, California. Several of the students graduating will be the first in their families to get a diploma. Students come to the continuation school for a fresh start; many were at risk of not graduating. "It's a very big deal, many of them have not received any accolades, or any awards or any kind of recognition, any kind of victory. So when we see them with this victory, this is a big one," said Moreno. When graduation was canceled due to COVID-19, students and their families were devastated.So the district wanted to do something special, enlisting help from VEGO Pictures to create a virtual graduation. The Hollywood production company changed its business model seemingly overnight to create virtual graduations for schools around the country. The move also helped employ Hollywood producers and directors out of work due to the pandemic. With guidance from a VEGO Pictures producer, schools tape various clips they'd like to include in the virtual ceremony, and then the production company handles the rest. Customized for each school, the ceremony is a tribute to student's talents and achievements from the last four years. Anyone around the world can tune in to the virtual ceremony."I think it's pretty cool!" said Lorenzo Lopez, an Aurora High graduate. "Since it's going to be recorded and not in person, I can save it and watch it another time and show it to my kids and my grandkids."While disappointed they couldn't have a traditional ceremony, students say they're grateful to at least have this memory. 1879

CHICAGO, Ill. – A star of the Netflix show “Cheer” has been arrested and charged with producing child pornography.The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois said in a press release Thursday that Jeremiah (Jerry) Harris used a social media app to repeatedly entice an underage boy to produce and send sexually explicit videos and photos of himself.A criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago shows the victim informed Harris that he was 13 years old during their initial encounter online.Harris, a Naperville resident, was taken into custody Thursday morning on the one count of producing child pornography, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.Production of child porn is punishable by a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum of 30 years.Harris is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Thursday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge M. David Weisman in Chicago.Law enforcement is continuing to investigate. That's what's floating in the Pacific Ocean right now.A group started an ambitious project to clean it up.Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup, has waited five years to see his idea put into action. That idea consists of a 2,000-foot long barrier, with a 10-foot skirt below that’ll help get plastic out of the ocean.“2,000 feet is a pretty big clean up system, and just imagining that the future one will probably be you know maybe twice as large,” says Slat.It's work starts at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch--an area between California and Hawaii--with a pile of trash three times the size of France.  “You go out there, it's all blue. The thing is you're all miles away from any human activity and you start to see like objects that you can see in your kitchen,” says Laurent Lebreton, lead oceanographer. “So, it's just very striking like you wouldn't expect.”The system will corral the plastic floating on the surface, so fish and other ocean life can swim underneath. Then, smaller boats take the plastic back to shore for recycling. The Ocean Cleanup says it can extract 50 percent of the plastic in the patch every five years.  “That's a huge goal,” says Dr. Mikki McColb-Kobza, with Ocean First Institute. “If they are able to do that, I think that is a really big dent into the problem.”Dr. McColb-Kobza says the system is meeting an unaddressed need.  “There really haven't been a lot of other projects trying to go out and bring trash bag to try and figure out a way to bring it back,” he says.  Still, some say the system creates a false sense of security, and more focus should be placed on keeping plastic out of the ocean to begin with.  But Dr. McColb-Kobza says the project is a great way to get that conversation started.  “Really the key is not only to clean up what is there, but it's to think about why you know do we live in this plastic throw a way society.”   1990
