(KGTV) - A woman who was struck by a vehicle in Chula Vista Thursday night died of her injuries in the hospital, according to Chula Vista Police.Dispatchers received several 911 calls about the crash at Fourth Ave and C Street at 9:15 p.m. The location is near a CVS pharmacy and Jack in the Box.Officers said they found the 57-year-old victim in the intersection with serious injuries. She was taken to UCSD Hospital for treatment but later died.An investigation showed that the woman had entered the crosswalk on a red light, police said.Chula Vista Police are asking anyone with information to call 619-691-5151. 643

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Elementary School District says families can now pick up both breakfast and lunch meals in one trip, the district announced Wednesday.CVESD is working with families to make the meal service more accessible and increase participation. Previously, the service was offered over to two different sessions for breakfast and lunch requiring families to make two trips.The hours are: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day, the district said.Schools throughout the county are continuing to provide free meals to students in need amid the COVID-19 outbreak.CVESD is also extending the "grab-and-go" meal service at all nine school sites through spring break, March 23-27 and March 30 to April 3."Students who are receiving the meals must be physically present. CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. – A black bear is thanking its lucky stars that a Wisconsin family was in the right place at the right time.After a day of fishing on Sunday, Tricia Hurt told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that she, her husband and their son were returning to a dock on Marsh-Miller Lake when they spotted something strange in the water.As the family approached, they realized it was a young bear that was struggling to swim because it had a cheese ball container stuck around its head.They felt compelled to help free the bear from the tub, worrying that if they didn’t, it wouldn’t be able to make it back to short safely.So, Tricia says her son Brady maneuvered their boat while her husband leaned into the water to tug on the container. It took multiple passes, but they eventually managed to free the animal from the plastic. Tricia says the bear then swam back to shore.The family believes that if they had not helped the bear, it may have not made it to shore, because it was breathing heavily and the container had filled with water.Tricia documented their rescue efforts on video and posted it online. As of Tuesday morning, her Facebook post has been shared more than 18,000 times.The family says the bear had actually been spotted several times over the past few days and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources had been looking for it, but without any luck. 1389

Childhood obesity is a big issue in our country. The latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show 1 in 5 school-aged children in America is considered obese.The Kohler family works hard to raise their children healthy. But one medical professional says it’s also the government’s responsibility to help.Dr. Scott Kahan, who sits on the board of directors for the Obesity Action Coalition, says it's not just the Kohler’s responsibility to keep their children healthy, it’s also on local and state governments to make a difference.   "For example, local policies that increase the opportunity, that increase physical activity during the school day have come into place, and that's a good area for governments to work on," Dr. Kahan says.   The Kohler family agrees.   According to the CDC, only 29 percent of high school students attended physical education classes in 2015.   Family and consumer science classes, once known as home economics, are dwindling in schools, mainly due to problems finding qualified teachers.  "Parents can take it on themselves to learn more about the eating and activity and come up with creative ways to help their kids be a little bit healthier," Dr. Kahan says.   When it comes to school lunches, 50 percent of kids’ daily caloric intake come from them, and 31 million kids eat them every day, according to Kaiser Permanente. That's why there are guidelines in place to keep them healthy.   The Kohler family feels lucky to be able to make their children healthy lunches.   "We know what's going into their lunch box and what they are going to eat every day,” the Kohler parents say.   Dr. Kahan says we need to stop pointing the finger and realize parents, schools, state and local governments all play a role in a child’s life.   "We help everyone to pull together, so that we can all lead healthier and happier lives," Dr. Kahan says. 2005

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Free coronavirus testing will soon be available to students and staff in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. This week, the board voted to approve a plan to make that happen.Testing would move the state’s largest elementary school district closer to in-person learning. The district is partnering with bioscience company, Kahala, to provide the free tests.Testing would be voluntary for students, teachers and staff. Participants would be tested every two weeks for the virus and once for antibodies.RELATED: Poway Unified School District approves campus return plan for some studentsOn-site testing would be available at five schools to start and would later expand to more locations. Kahala will bill the participant’s insurance to cover the cost.The district says the idea is to determine the level of active cases so they can mitigate the spread.The plan is already drawing some criticism from teachers. Susan Skala with the Chula Vista Educators Union is worried about working with Kahala since the company formed early this year.“We simply don’t know enough about it because this program has been what we feel has been rushed through,” said Skala. “We’re not sure about how our medical data would be secure, we’re not sure about the confidentially and integrity of the program.”Dr. Michael Miyamoto is the Chief Medical Officer of Kahala. He says their staff is composed of practicing physicians. They have current partnerships with private companies and health care facilities for employee testing.Miyamoto says their tests are authorized by the FDA for emergency use.“Many, if not most of the diagnostic tests and treatments for COVID-19 are authorized under an Emergency Use Authorization,” said Miyamoto. “This was done because a lot of the regulatory review of these needed to be done very quickly in order to get these test and therapeutics out for use by healthcare practitioners.”He says the more people that volunteer, the better.“If we have a reasonable sampling the information will be very helpful in making decisions but also as a model for other school systems around the country,” he said.The Chula Vista Elementary District says they haven’t decided which schools to use as testing sites yet, but they will be available to anyone in the district.“Our learning community from any of our systems can access any of those five to six sites for that testing,” said Anthony Millican with CVESD.The district is also partnering with the County Health and Human Services Agency as well as the City of Chula Vista. Those programs have free testing options for families without health insurance.The district does not have a scheduled date for returning to in-person learning.
