President Trump, at least for now, won't be able to do that in person.Trump had been out holding big rallies despite the coronavirus pandemic. His latest was in Minnesota on Wednesday in front of thousands, a day before he announced he tested positive for COVID-19."Rolling into the last month the president was planning to be on the campaign trail, in front of large crowds, where he thrives, the venue where he performs the best, and this is certainly an obstacle to that style of campaigning," said Thad Kousser, a political analyst at UC San Diego.Kousser said depending on what happens, an already political virus could make for different conclusions from each side."It'll confirm the worries that Joe Biden supporters had that the country and the nation and its president weren't taking the pandemic seriously enough," Kousser said. "If President Trump, as we all hope has a quick recovery, I think that will confirm the belief that the Trump base has that this is something that we can overcome."Kousser says he expects Joe Biden to continue to campaign on the road, but even more carefully.He says if either candidate were to become incapacitated it would make for an even more chaotic election because ballots will have already started going out.Kousser says each party has policies in place to select a replacement candidate should the need arise. (KGTV) - Suspected drug smugglers were rescued by U.S. Coast Guard crews this month after their vessel erupted into flames before sinking.Crews from the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO), the U.S. Navy ship USS Zephyr, and the Colombian Navy ship ARC "07 de Agosto" detected the high-speed vessel on April 7 in the eastern Pacific Ocean.As crews prepared to intercept the vessel, the suspected smugglers allegedly began abandoning their cargo and jumped from the boat as it caught fire.RELATED: Canadian who posted drug smuggling trip on Instagram sentenced to prisonCrews rescued four suspected smugglers and spent 90 minutes extinguishing the flames."There was no doubt in our minds what needed to be done to salvage the evidence needed for a successful prosecution even if it meant laying Zephyr alongside a burning hull, with the intense heat and acrid smoke hindering our 90-minute firefight," Lt. Cmdr. Grant Greenwell, the commanding officer of the Zephyr, said.After putting out the fire, crews say they recovered about 1,080 pounds of cocaine. (KGTV) One person is dead after being partially sucked out of the window of an airplane.Southwest Flight 1380 was forced to make an emergency landing after engine failure following takeoff from New York. The plane was headed for Dallas.Witnesses say the engine exploded, shattering one of the windows and a female passenger was nearly sucked out of the plane at 32,000 feet.The captain was able to safely land the plane in Philadelphia where 148 people were able to walk off the plane, but the injured female passenger was transported to a local hospital and died later, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.Jennifer Riordan, a Wells Fargo bank executive from New Mexico, is the only fatality from the incident.RELATED: 1 dead after plane makes emergency landing in PhiladelphiaThe NTSB says Riordan is the first U.S. airline death since 2009.Southwest Airlines CEO says the company is fully cooperating with the NTSB in the investigation More than 38% of passengers fly Southwest Airlines out of Lindbergh Field, according to the San Diego Airport Authority. 1099

“Today I'm donating convalescent plasma,” Judy Lutkin said.“This will be my third time donating.” Lutkin had COVID-19 back in April. “I was pretty sick for about four or five days,” she said. Now she comes infrequently to donate plasma. “It doesn't hurt. It doesn't feel bad. It’s fairly easy.”Plasma is just one of the tools used in fighting coronavirus. As it gets donated, it goes to COVID patients.Since early April, when Vitalant started collecting these donations, they’ve collected more than 9,700 donations equaling more than 33,000 units.“You could help as many as five patients with one sitting,” Liz Lambert, Vitalant spokesperson, said.Vitalant is a nonprofit that collects blood for about 1,000 hospitals across the country.“Right now, there's an emergency need for convalescent plasma as we anticipate more patients will be getting that treatment, or hospitals will be wanting to use that treatment,” Lambert said.The FDA issued an emergency use authorization for convalescent plasma as a potential COVID-19 treatment in late August. Convalescent plasma is taken from the blood of someone who’s already contracted a particular illness, in this case, COVID-19.This isn’t the first time in history; it’s been used to treat a virus.“Convalescent plasma is a very historic and crude way of conferring so-called passive immunity to patients who have a viral or bacterial disease,” Doctor Phil Stahel, Chief Medical Officer at the Medical Center of Aurora, said.So far, this center has treated 100 COVID-19 patients using this method.“Studies have shown that convalescent plasma is very safe,” he said. “It has been recently used for Ebola and other viral diseases for which we do not have a vaccination.”Doctor Stahel said patients they treat who are significantly sick could recover within 24 to 48 hours.Here’s how it works.“Antibodies are proteins that we form in our blood that attack antigens once our immune system recognizes them. It takes weeks for these to develop,” Doctor Ralph Vassallo, Chief Medical & Scientific Officer for Vitalant, said.The antibodies are taken from a recovered patient and put in a patient who recently contracted the disease.“The idea of convalescent plasma is to give them, in that period, when the patient does not have their immune response, to help neutralize the virus and prevent it from infecting cells in the body,” Doctor Vassallo said. “Convalescent plasma has been used for over 100 years in respiratory infections, including influenza.”With more hospitals using convalescent plasma to help COVID-19 patients, blood donation centers hope to identify more plasma donors who have recovered from the virus.“Whether its blood or convalescent plasma, there is a constant need,” Lambert said.Vitalant checks every regular blood donor for the antibodies as well, in hopes of identifying more possible donors.“In the first couple of September, it’s been about 3.6% nationwide,” Dr. Vassallo said.Those interested in donating convalescent plasma need to meet the same requirements as a blood donor, like being 16 years old or older, and at least 110 pounds.However, they also need to have a doctor-referred case of COVID-19 or doctor-referred antibody test.“It is indeed the first line of defense, and we should treat those patients early. This is for the adult in patients who are severely sick and at risk of getting on a ventilator, which we try to avoid by all means,” Doctor Stahel said. 3450
