SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group called "Pillars of the Community" is working to make sure people inside San Diego county jails are registered and able to vote. The non-profit based out of southeast San Diego hires inmates to work from the inside. Their efforts were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic this year but they're still hiring and trying to gather information to support their request to have polling places put inside the jails. 443

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 4.9-magnitude earthquake and several smaller shakeups recorded in Imperial County on Wednesday were reportedly felt in San Diego County. The swarm of earthquakes was centered around the Westmorland area. While many of the smaller quakes were recorded between 2.5- and 3.7-magnitude, about 80 earthquakes measuring at least 2.5-magnitude were recorded between 4 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.The largest earthquake as of 5:45 p.m. registered at 4.9-magnitude, according to the agency's latest earthquakes map.Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones tweeted that Wednesday's series of earthquakes was one of the largest swarms Imperial Valley has seen, adding that the area is historically active in swarms."The swarm happening now south of the Salton Sea, near Westmoreland is over 30 km south of the end of the San Andreas," Jones tweeted. "It is in the Brawley seismic zone, a common source of swarms. So far largest is M4.4. Too far from the San Andreas to change the probability of a quake on it." 1004

SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - President Trump will visit San Diego in March to view the border wall prototypes, according to the Washington Post.Trump will get a first-hand look at the eight 30-foot tall prototyles in Otay Mesa and attend a Republic National Committee fundraiser in Los Angeles. It will be Trump's first to California since he was elected, The Washington Post reported.RELATED: Federal officials view border wall prototypesThe exact date of the trip was not released but the newspaper reported it would happen in mid-March.Trump last week lashed out at what he called California officials' "lousy management" and threatened to pull federal immigration agents out of the state."They're doing a lousy management job, they have the highest taxes in the nation and they don't know what's happening out there. Frankly it's a disgrace, the sanctuary city situation, the protection of these horrible criminals," Trump said.INTERACTIVE TIMELINE: President Trump's border wallThe wall prototypes represent the signature promise of Trump's campaign: To build a "big, beautiful wall" along the U.S.-Mexico border. He has so far been unsuccessful in his attempts to have Mexico pay for the wall, as he had promised, nor has he been able to secure billion for the project from Congress, which would pay for 300 miles of new barriers and the replacement of 400 miles of existing fencing, according to The Post. 1455

SAN DIEGO (Daily Aztec) - San Diego State men’s basketball returned in triumphant fashion to the friendly confines of Viejas Arena, defeating Jackson State 87-44 in front of a crowd of 10,453 on Tuesday night.SDSU (4-2), just six days removed from competing in the Maui Invitational in Maui, Hawaii, scored the first 11 points and never trailed in a wire-to-wire victory over the Tigers. In Maui, SDSU came away victorious against defending Big East champion Xavier, but struggled in losses to Duke and Iowa State, falling by deficits of 30 and 26 points, respectively.  Head coach Brian Dutcher said the game was a chance for the Aztecs to show what they were made of, following tough defeats.“We were challenged against Xavier and came back, we were challenged against Iowa State and didn’t fight hard enough,” Dutcher said. “So I said this is the next challenge. So you’ve been challenged, lets see what you’re about.”   The battled-tested Aztecs showed no ill effects against the Tigers, looking resurgent while jumping out to a nearly 30-point halftime lead.Jackson State (1-6), meanwhile, looked like a team that could end up being bottom-dwellers in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, finishing the game with more turnovers (23) than made field goals (15).Click here to read the full story on The Daily Aztec 1345
