SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year. Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers. We’ve asked that the other agencies that we work with here in the county provide resources, and they stepped up, and we’re very appreciative of that.”San Diego Fire-Rescue has also increased staffing and equipment. The National Weather Service extended a Red Flag Warning to Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the inland valleys and mountains.A heat advisory will also be in effect Tuesday through Thursday.Just weeks ago, the Valley Fire destroyed homes and charred more than 16 thousand acres in the East County. With similar weather conditions, fire crews hope community members will try to reduce the possibility of a fire sparking.“If everybody could do their part, anything they can think of that can start a fire, whether its dragging chains down the highway, clearing brush with metal motors, please be extra cautious,” said Shoots.SDG&E warned 700 customers in the backcountry of the possibility of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) but sent the all-clear to most customers by Monday afternoon. However, 19 customers in Descanso may still be impacted by PSPS overnight into Tuesday. 1651

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — You may have seen signs in front of businesses asking customers for card transactions or cash only with exact change. That's because the coronavirus pandemic is causing a national coin shortage.Money is money. But right now, paper is not as valuable as metal for Pacific Beach resident, Michele Pagnano."I go through a good amount of change on a regular basis," Pagnano said.He uses his apartment complex's coin laundry about three to four times a week. So when he was running low on coins, he headed to the bank, like he always does."Three weeks ago, I was at Wells Fargo," Pagnano said. "I wanted to get worth [of quarters] so that it could hold me over for a couple of weeks. And the teller says she could only give me . I went around to a few more banks, and they all had that same practice in place."There's a reason for that. The Federal Reserve says there is a coin shortage caused by the pandemic. Weeks ago, the US Mint reduced coin production to protect its employees from the virus. Plus, with more people shopping online or using touch-less payment methods, cash, especially coins, is not circulating like it use to."If there's none in circulation, it becomes a toilet paper panic again, just like at the beginning of the pandemic," Pagnano said. But Pagnano says he was not going to give up on clean clothes that easily."I even went around to a couple of laundry mats to try to get some quarters from them," Pagnano. "None of them were allowing you to take the quarters off the premises. One guy even told me that he only had in circulation for their entire laundry mat."He also went on Facebook to see if any of his neighbors can do a swap. He even contacted his landlord for help."I already reached out to the landlord and asked if we could buy back the quarters that are already in the machines," Pagnano said. "Hopefully, that is something we can make happen to alleviate the problem, at least for our complex."His last resort? On a whim, Pagnano says he walked into San Diego County Credit Union, which is just down the street from his home. To his surprise, he got lucky."We got the million-dollar quarters right here!" Pagnano laughed. The Federal Reserve believes the coin shortage will be resolved, and more coins will be back in circulation once more of the economy reopens. 2333

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two San Diego nursing homes are now dealing with positive cases of COVID-19. La Vida Real, an assisted living center in Rancho San Diego, confirmed to 10News that four of its staff members have tested positive for coronavirus. The facility is one of 32 owned by the Senior Resource Group. It’s the second local assisted living center to be hit with COVID-19. This Wednesday, San Diego County officials confirmed to 10News a positive case at Stellar Care Center, just south of the College Area. Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes keeps growing: In Kirkland, Washington, an outbreak at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths. In Louisiana, eleven deaths have now been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. In Mount Laurel, New Jersey, three patients at a nursing home have now died after testing positive.La Vida Real issued a statement to 10News, detailing how the company is handling the coronavirus cases:"La Vida Real has communicated with residents and their families, and is in close contact with San Diego County health officials, after learning that four staff members in our assisted living and memory care building tested positive for COVID-19. We are monitoring the situation closely and requiring all staff in the assisted living and memory care building to wear masks when inside the building and use personal protective equipment when interacting with residents showing any symptoms, per CDC guidelines. Out of an abundance of caution we are also working with the health department to test one additional employee and four residents in memory care.We will continue to follow CDC and public health department guidance and take the steps necessary to protect the health and safety of residents and staff. We are committed to continue the rigorous protective measures and precautionary actions we have implemented in this challenging environment. And while the effects of this virus are impacting everyone, we take protecting our residents and employees very seriously."Additionally, the organization says they continue to take extensive precautionary measures for residents and staff at the community, including:Visits are limited to essential visitors only. (Adults over the age of 18 who are medical providers, hospice care providers, or visitors of residents who are at the end of life.)All visitors and employees must complete an extensive screening process including travel and health questions as well as have their temperature read.Essential visits may only occur in resident rooms. All visitors and employees should practice precautionary measures such as use of sanitizers, hand washing and social distancing. Our onsite restaurant and communal dining rooms have been closed. Residents are being offered multiple menu choices and snacks delivered with complimentary room service. All community events have been canceled until further notice.Virtual activities, aimed at engaging our residents physically, intellectually and spiritually are being encouraged throughout the community. 3114
