While many businesses are preparing to ignore public health orders to close or limit operations, public health experts warn the consequences of failure to limit the spread of the virus will be dire.“The reality of it is indoor spaces with people talking without masks are not safe. I think that’s really important to getting this under control,” said Dr. Rebecca Fielding-Miller, an expert in infectious diseases at UC San Diego.She says the county has tried to chart a middle course between allowing businesses to remain open while trying to rein in the virus. “We have been, I’m really sorry to say, doing it in half measures since March," Fielding-Miller said.But to be successful, such a policy requires a great commitment by the public to safety measures such as wearing masks, social distancing, and avoiding gatherings. That commitment has proven vulnerable to the COVID fatigue felt by the public, as adherence to those measures tends to slide with time.Fielding-Miller says some counties in the United States, along with some other countries, have had success with brief but strict lockdowns. However, there may not be public support for such actions here.Others advocate a full reopening of the economy and letting the virus run its course. They argue that the economic, psychological, and educational harm from the public health restrictions are greater than the damage caused by the virus itself. Proponents say the United States should try a “herd immunity” strategy, where attempts are made to protect vulnerable populations, but the virus is otherwise allowed to spread unchecked through the general population. The theory projects that once enough people are infected, the virus has nowhere left to spread and will die out on its own.Most public health experts say that method could prove catastrophic. They point out that it’s not known how many people would have to be infected, but it would have to be a majority. “If we went down this path where we attempt to infect 70% of the population, the very, very likely outcome is we would end up with something like one to two million Americans dying,” said Fielding-Miller. Furthermore, it is also not known how long a person is immune after recovering from COVID-19. There have already been cases of people being infected for a second time. “We would end up with extraordinarily high rates of disability and mortality for no gain at all, for people to just be able to get reinfected in six months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Crews are clearing out a large homeless encampment hidden out of sight. It’s so big, it’s taking crews three days to clear the area in Webster. Trash, soiled clothes and old food containers is only a small list of what the eight man crew had to clean up. Stephen Driver, with the Alpha Project Abatement team says the area is, “really filthy. There’s urine bottles all over the place, buckets with human feces, dead animals. You name it.”The Alpha Project Abatement team cleared a stretch of Federal Boulevard. The homeless camp was tucked away near a flood channel. Driver says most of these camps are not easily seen. The Alpha Project crew is contracted with the City of San Diego. They work with the city’s Environmental Services Department to clear the mess. “Sometimes the people are here but usually they’re packing up and leaving once we get here,” says Driver. Police were on hand to make sure crews were safe. The city gave the people living there about a week’s notice about the cleanup.The Alpha Project offers a number of resources for the homeless, including a bridge shelter in downtown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers arrested a driver who knocked over a light pole on Interstate 5, causing it to fall into the path of oncoming traffic Friday night.It happened on the northbound lanes of I-5 just before the State Route 163 connector.The driver of a white Chevy Impala went off the road crashed into two light poles, knocking one of the light poles onto the right lane and into oncoming traffic.CHP says at least seven cars smashed into the downed light pole, damaging the vehicles. However, there were no injuries.The driver of the Impala told CHP he merely fell asleep behind the wheel, but after a sobriety test, he was arrested.“He was arrested for DUI,” said Steve Jio, with the CHP. “Possibly drugs, and we’re taking him to our station to be evaluated."Three lanes of I-5 were closed off for about an hour as crews removed the damaged vehicles and the downed light pole.Crews plan to replace the light pole Saturday morning. 974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are searching for a person suspected of starting a trash can fire that scorched the side of a Normal Heights home early Thursday morning.At around 2 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to the 3300 block of Meade Avenue in response to a trash can on fire next to a house.Some residents told ABC 10News they heard noises at the trash cans and the saw a fire begin to ignite.Screams from residents apparently scared off a person believed to have sparked the blaze.As fire crews arrived, flames from the trash can burned the side of one house. The fire was quickly knocked down before it could engulf the entire home.ABC 10News learned one person was displaced due to the fire; no injuries were reported.A description of the person suspected of starting the fire was not immediately available.Arson investigators are involved in the fire probe. 889
