New York City hit a major milestone over the weekend in its fight against the coronavirus after recording its first 24-hour period without a COVID-19 death in months, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday.Speaking during a coronavirus briefing Monday morning, de Blasio warned that COVID-19 is “far from beaten,” especially considering the surge in cases in many cities and states around the country.“No one can celebrate but we can at least take a moment to appreciate that everyone of you did so much to get us to this point: 24 hours when no one died, let's have many more days like that,” the mayor said. “And it’s a reminder, of course, that this disease is such a formidable foe that it’s been months and months since we’ve had a day like this.”Preliminary data from the city Health Department indicates that the period of no COVID-19 deaths was on Saturday. They said on Sunday that the data is subject to change. As of Sunday, New York City had recorded 18,670 lab-confirmed COVID-19 deaths and an additional 4,613 probable deaths related to the virus since the outbreak began in March. There have been 215,924 confirmed cases of the virus across the five boroughs.De Blasio urged New Yorkers not to let up on social distancing or following rules and restrictions related to the outbreak and the state’s phased reopening plan. The mayor also issued new guidance on wearing face coverings indoors.New Yorkers should wear a face covering when around others in an indoor setting that isn't their home, de Blasio said. This story originally reported by Lauren Cook on PIX11.com. 1585

North Korea is getting increasingly angry at the US, as talks are deadlocked and tensions between the two countries are on the rise, a source familiar with the discussions told CNN.US and foreign sources close to the talks paint a picture that's starkly different from the image President Donald Trump sought to convey Wednesday, when he told reporters the administration is "very happy with how it's going with North Korea. We think it's going fine."Trump had been asked about the administration's announcement, in the middle of the night as Tuesday's midterm elections results were coming in, that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's Thursday meeting with a key aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had been postponed."We're very happy with how it's going with North Korea. We think it's going fine. We're in no rush. We're in no hurry," Trump told reporters at a White House press conference. "The sanctions are on. The missiles have stopped. The rockets have stopped. The hostages are home. The great heroes are home." 1030

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Bill de Blaiso suggested that the snow day as we know it may be gone due to remote learning, as the city prepares for what could be it's biggest snow storm in years. The mayor announced that all schools, including in-person learning, would be open Wednesday. The mayor cited expectations that the storm will not begin to hit New York City until 4 p.m. School buses will also be in use. "School will be in session Wednesday," de Blasio said. "We do not expect the snow to even begin until school is complete tomorrow." On Thursday, there will be classes one way or the other. While the decision has not yet been made on in-person learning, all students will have the option of remote learning for Thursday regardless of how much snow the area gets.De Blasio suggested parents have an alternative ready for Thursday. "We're going to be assessing the storm as it arrives, we will be making a decision as we get more information." De Blasio suggested they may have the information they need to make a decision by 6 p.m. Wednesday. The city is under a winter storm watch for late Wednesday into Thursday.
