SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - After a heart attack nearly killed him at age 46, Adam Bavario is now thanking his doctors, and his dog.For 27 years Bavario was a medic and police officer in Los Angeles. He says while he loved the job it caused a lot of added stress on him physically and mentally. During his 30's Bavario started having health issues and chest pains, but every time doctors ran tests they couldn't find anything wrong.The misdiagnosis almost killed him five months ago. "I knew I was having a heart attack. I went to grab my phone and passed out on the floor," said Bavario.He was suffering one of the deadliest heart attacks, known as the widow maker. "One of his major arteries was 100 percent blocked, and if that doesn’t get opened in time or quickly, there's a potential for something catastrophic," said Dr. Karim El-Sherief, an Interventional Cardiologist at Tri-City Medical Center.While unconscious, Bavario's sleeping dog Roxy awoke and sensed he was in trouble, licking and nudging him until he woke up. “The ironic thing about Roxy is Roxy is completely deaf from birth, she had enough awareness to come in and get me up," said Bavario.He was able to call 911 and then first responders from the San Marcos Fire Department got Bavario to Tri-City Medical Center in minutes. Dr. El-Sherief and his team were able to treat Bavario in record time for the hospital, 27 minutes. Now Bavario is using his free time to advocate for cardiac awareness. "What I can tell you is get checked out, do your routines," Bavario says.Dr. El-Sherief says with proper screenings along with diet and exercise, these heart attacks can be prevented. SAN FRANCISCO (KGTV) – The first case of coronavirus with unknown origin has been confirmed in Northern California. The resident hasn’t traveled overseas since the outbreak began, the CDC said Wednesday. It’s unknown how the patient got the virus. "At this time, the patient's exposure is unknown. It's possible this could be an instance of community spread of COVID-19, which would be the first time this has happened in the United States. Community spread means spread of an illness for which the source of infection is unknown," the agency said in a statement. (KGTV) — Hundreds gathered in Santee on Saturday to call for justice for women of color.A flyer for the march advertised "promoting black and brown unity" and justice for Breonna Taylor and Vanessa Guillén.Breonna Taylor was an EMT who was shot and killed during a no-knock warrant against her boyfriend at her home in March. No drugs were found in her apartment.Vanessa Guillén was a 20-year-old Army specialist who disappeared in April from Fort Hood in Texas. Remains believed to be hers were found near the Army post in July, sparking protests over the military's handling of sexual harassment allegations.A section of Mission Gorge Rd. was blocked off by police for the planned protest. Counter-demonstrators also assembled in the area.One of the demonstration's organizers told ABC 10News that they hope their calls for racial justice are heard by Santee's City Council leaders."Santee has its things, it's known as being racist, and I'm here to change that. That's the goal," said Alana, one of the organizers with East County BIPOC, who adds that she is born and raised in Santee. "We tried to work with City Council and we tried to be a part of a diversity committee, and it was kind of just brushed under the rug. Nothing ever happened."The group is also calling for City Council to create a diversity committee led by people of color, for Santee Mayor John Minto to denounce the Defend East County Facebook group, and to meet with San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain Christina Bavencoff.One demonstrator told ABC 10News, "our message is that minorities can be safe here. SAN ONOFRE, Calif. (KGTV) - On Tuesday, two Southern California congressmen toured the shuttered San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, or SONGS. There was an announcement made to the press about new legislation, amid environmental and safety concerns at the facility.Representative Harley Rouda (D-CA-48) told reporters, “We both recognize that we have an issue here.” He and Representative Mike Levin (D-CA-49) got a firsthand look at the controversial conditions inside SONGS. The two representatives serve districts that cover north coastal San Diego into Orange County, where SONGS is located. “Today, I’m pleased to announce that when I return to Washington, I’ll be introducing new legislation to ensure the spent fuel here at SONGS receives top priority from the federal government for disposal,” said Rep. Levin. His newest effort will be called the Spent Fuel Prioritization bill. To decommission the power plant, crews have been transferring spent nuclear fuel into square vaults on the beach until the government figures out what to do with them, next, which will likely involve transferring them to a remote, out-of-state location. The congressmen are calling for more federal oversight after safety concerns were raised about the integrity of the fuel storage canisters. Additionally, last summer a loaded canister was nearly dropped several feet. “I think there's dispute and well-intentioned dispute about what the outcome would have been had that 18-foot drop occurred,” adds Rep. Levin.SONGS’ operator, Southern California Edison, sent 10News the following statement: “Southern California Edison welcomes the congressmen’s efforts to develop solutions to the issues of transportation and long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel. SCE has been safely storing spent nuclear fuel on site at SONGS for nearly 50 years. We will continue to store spent nuclear fuel here safely until it is moved off site to a federally licensed facility.”“It should be important to you and certainly to your children and grandchildren,” said Rep.
