SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices continue to soar in Southern California, rising nearly two cents more Monday. According to figures from AAA, the price for a gallon of gas gone up more than 50 cents in less than a month. AAA also says that the price has risen for 21 consecutive days and 27 of the last 28 days in San Diego County. California's gas tax is also set to increase by 5.6 cents on July 1, 2019. Meanwhile, the national average for a gallon of gas Monday was .74.AAA says a series of refinery issues reduced gas supplies.Bloomberg Phillips 66 refinery in Los Angeles, and Chevron Corp.'s El Segundo plants all experienced shut downs and stalls in oil production due to various problems. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded Tuesday afternoon after a brush fire broke out near Scripps Mercy Hospital Tuesday afternoon. According to fire crews, the fire broke near northbound SR-163 and Washington Street. At this time it's unclear what caused the fire. Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the area as passersby drove on the roadway.  381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Heavy rain over the last few years has brought an unexpected splash of color to portions of San Diego.For the last month or so, Rainbow Eucalyptus trees have been shedding their bark, revealing a multi-colored trunk."It's outstanding," says Peter Fritsch, who walks by a handful of the trees along Sports Arena Boulevard. "I love the contrast between the gold and the red and the gray and sometimes blue."RELATED: Interactive map: Exploring San Diego's history, culture through street artHorticulture experts say the colors are more pronounced in tropical climates, but here in San Diego, you can still see a rainbow on the trees."As it ages, the stuff that doesn't look as colorful, has been oxidized somewhat, it peels off," says Bradley Brown, a Master Arborist with Tree Life Consulting. "Over time, the new bark will have those varying shades of color."According to the city, there are Rainbow Eucalyptus trees in Balboa Park, Sports Arena, the San Diego Zoo and parts of Mission Bay. They grow fast and have a tendency to fall over in high wind and rain events.But Brown says they can be safe if they're well maintained. He'd like to see more planted throughout the city."It's something we should embrace. It's kind of San Diego's tree," he says. "You see pictures of LA and they have palm trees. Ours is the Eycalyptus. It's those Dr. Seuss forms along the freeway that's something we should embrace." 1829

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Father Joe’s Villages will be making changes to how they serve their annual Thanksgiving meal due to the pandemic.Deacon Jim Vargas says the meals will be prepared ‘to go’ and given to people outdoors in their courtyard. As a result, they plan on needing fewer volunteers this year. Those that will be there to give out the meals will be wearing masks and practicing social distancing.Vargas says there is greater food insecurity in the community this year because of the pandemic. As a result, they are preparing more food.“We typically serve about 700 or so. We’re prepared to serve close to a thousand this year because we know there’s an increased need,” Vargas said.Anyone receiving a meal will also receive a backpack that comes with a face covering, hand sanitizer, and hygiene kits.The pandemic is also impacting their annual 5K, which is held at Balboa Park on Thanksgiving Day. This year, the event will be virtual, and Vargas says registration for the event is down. That concerns Vargas because it is their second-largest fundraiser for the year, which brings in about 0,000 for food services. 1135
