BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) - California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a wrong-way crash on the Eastbound lanes of Highway 54 near the 125. The crash happened just after 8 p.m. Friday and reduced traffic to one lane. All lanes reopened shortly before 11 p.m. CHP believes the driver of a red Toyota Corolla was driving the wrong way and crashed into a white BMW carrying a mother and two children. (KGTV) -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 hit near Borrego Springs Wednesday night.The earthquake struck roughly 10 miles north northeast of Borrego Springs just after 6:30 p.m. Residents in the area report feeling brief shaking during the earthquake.  366

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Kids with autism aren't damaged. They just connect with people differently. That's what scientists Dr. Marcus Thomeer and Dr. Chris Lopata have been trying to prove through research for 20 years.“The longitudinal research on our kids shows that they have limited capacity to get and maintain a job, they have social isolation, prolonged dependence on family members,” said Dr. Lopata.They're co-directors of the Institute for Autism Research at Canisius College. After several clinical trials, they say they've found something effective to help change the lives of high-functioning children living with autism. Researchers work one-on-one with students to improve their social skills “These are kids that want to have friends, they just don’t know how to do it. They have so much to offer, but we need to make sure we’re giving them skills,” said Dr. Thomeer.They've created programs and clinical trials to focus on improving these skills. They just finished their most recent trial called "MaxOut" for kids ages 7 to 12.They're focused on maximizing? four skills:1. Social skills2. Face and emotion recognition3. Expanding their interests4. Understanding non-literal languageFor 18 weeks they worked on these social skills with 88 children, one-on-one. The results were positive.“We’re seeing our kids have friendships and have kids come over and they’re being invited to birthday parties,” said Dr. Lopata. These IAR research trials are free for the participants Researchers say these new social skills are sticking with them, weeks after they've been practiced. The pair has seen positive results in their studies in schools (SchoolMax), summer programs (SummerMax), and more. Their next step is to take this program into the child’s home (HomeMax) and eventually across the country to help millions.“We’re looking to show that these are evidence-based programs that can be effective in improving the social performance of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder,” said Dr. Thomeer. BERLIN — A spacecraft bound for Mercury has swung by Venus, using Earth’s neighbor to adjust its course on the way to the solar system’s smallest and innermost planet. Launched almost two years ago, the European-Japanese probe BepiColombo took a black-and-white snapshot of Venus from a distance of 10,560 miles. The fly-by is the second of nine so-called planetary gravity assists that the spacecraft needs for its seven-year trip to Mercury. BepiColombo will make one more fly-by of Venus and six of Mercury itself to slow down before its arrival in 2025. Researchers hope the BepiColombo mission will help them understand more about Mercury, which is only slightly larger than Earth’s moon and has a massive iron core. 729

Brittany and Corey Oswell were flying home from their Hawaiian honeymoon in 2016 when Brittany became dizzy and fainted.She came to soon after, but when she later collapsed in the plane's lavatory, a doctor on board who'd been helping her told the flight crew they needed to land quickly, to get her the proper medical treatment.American Airlines Flight 102 was about an hour and a half from Dallas-Fort Worth, its destination. Despite the doctor's warning, the crew stayed the course while the doctor and flight attendants tried to treat Brittany, who was 25 years old at the time. She was taken to a hospital immediately upon landing, but died three days later.Now her family is suing the airline for wrongful death.Brad Cranshaw, the attorney for Brittany's husband and her parents, told CNN Friday the family's main objective isn't winning a financial settlement.They want the airline to re-examine its policy and procedures so this won't happen to anyone else, he said."The family wants something (they) can't have, and that's Brittany back," Cranshaw said. "But we are interested in how American intends to speak to the issues that lead to the circumstance that took Brittany's life and the pilots' decision making."An American Airlines representative said the company was "deeply saddened by this event and our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Mrs. Oswell's loved ones."We take the safety of our passengers very seriously and we are looking into the details of the complaint," the airline said.  1525
