(CNS) - An inmate was hospitalized with severe injuries after being found unresponsive in his cell at the South Bay Detention Facility in Chula Vista, authorities said Thursday.Around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, deputies assigned to South Bay Detention Facility, 500 Third Ave., found the man inside his cell "with obvious signs of trauma," San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver said.The man, whose age and name were not immediately available, was taken to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, Seiver said, adding that the victim was not expected to survive.The Sheriff's homicide unit responded and were investigating the circumstances leading up to the man's injuries. 716

(KGTV) - Chula Vista Police are asking the public for help solving three hit-and-run cases that have remained unsolved since January of last year — two of which resulted in deaths.The first occurred on Jan. 22, 2017, at about 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway and G Street. Police said 43-year-old Rafael Cruz Fermin was hit by a vehicle traveling southbound on Broadway. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene in what was described as a red, 2002-2005 Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer.Fermin died at the scene, despite being given first aid. Read more.The second incident was on Sept. 14, 2017, at about 7:30 p.m. in the 700 block of E Street. A driver struck a 52-year-old man between the McDonald's and Motel 6, before fleeing the area. The victim was left with severe internal injuries, of which police say he still suffers from.The driver, described as a possibly older, white man with short white or blonde hair, was last seen in a gold, older model Pontiac, Lincoln, or Buick. Read more.The third hit-and-run was on Jan. 4, 2018, at about 7 p.m. in the 1500 block of Third Ave. A vehicle traveling northbound on Third Ave. hit a 94-year-old man. CINCINNATI -- Police are looking for help finding a woman who took a blue morpho butterfly from Krohn Conservatory's special exhibit at about 5 p.m. Sunday. "I have never heard of anyone stealing a live butterfly from a butterfly show," said University of Cincinnati biology professor Stephen Matter Wednesday evening. The Menelaus blue morpho, which is prized by collectors for its vibrant, iridescent wing markings, lives natively in Central and South American forests. Although a news release from Cincinnati police identified it as "rare," it isn't especially, Matter said. (KGTV) -- A South Bay family spoke about the frightening moments that took place when a police chase ended in front their home and then turned into a shootout on their driveway Monday afternoon.Mark Yturralde said his son-in-law had the quick thinking and presence of mind to shut the door to prevent a suspect, later identified as David Angulo, from getting into their home on Rutgers Avenue.“I didn’t have time to be kind or nice. I had to shove my wife and granddaughter into a closet, and I told them to stay low, keep quiet, don’t come out until I tell you. I tried to watch from a corner,” said Yturralde.RELATED: Carjacking, pursuit leads to deadly officer-involved shooting in Chula VistaAccording to Chula Vista police, Angulo was a known gang member wanted in connection with at least three shootings in June. Police said Angulo carjacked a pickup truck in an area near Main Street, refused to pull over for officers, and led a pursuit into east Chula Vista.Police said Angulo lost control of the truck and crashed into a car driven by an active-duty military member. While the other driver was seriously injured, Angulo got out of the truck and ran to a family’s driveway.Angulo, according to police, opened fire at officers -- the exchange of gunfire that Yturralde said went on for several minutes. Shots struck and flattened the tires of vehicles parked in the driveway, but none of the bullets penetrated the house.Yturralde and Chula Vista police credited Yturralde’s son-in-law for keeping the incident from turning into a hostage situation, or worse.Angulo was killed during the shootout, and police said an investigation will determine how many shots were fired and who opened fire first. Police will also review officers’ body camera footage.Police promised the investigation findings will be released in a timely manner.The three officers involved in the incident were not injured.Family members said they found five shell casings in their backyard. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in Chula Vista have identified the man suspected of killing a relative Saturday afternoon. According to police, Norberto Sanchez, 55, is suspected of shooting and killing 65-year-old Maria Esther Gonzales on the 1100 block of Oasis Avenue. Police received a call around 12:30 p.m. from Sanchez’s niece. The woman told police that Sanchez called her to tell her he killed his father’s wife and was on his way to her home on the 500 block of Arizona Street. Police responded to the area and arrested Sanchez for murder. At this time, it’s unclear what the motive may have been for the crime.
