RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond Police are investigating after someone spray-painted "White Lives Matter" across a statue of black tennis legend Arthur Ashe statue along Monument Avenue in Richmond.Ashe, a Richmond-born tennis star and humanitarian, was the first black man to win U.S Open and Wimbledon titles.Wednesday's incident at the Ashe statue comes after weeks protests against police brutality both in Richmond and around the country.Statues along Monument Avenue honoring Confederate leaders like Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis have either been spray-painted or toppled during the protest.Concrete barriers were installed around the Lee statue on Wednesday morning.The Virginia Department of General Services said it was erecting the barriers to protect the safety of demonstrators and the structure.The action came shortly after protesters toppled the Howitzers Monument located near Virginia Commonwealth University's Monroe Park campus on Tuesday.It was the third Confederate statue, and the fourth monument, to be torn down by demonstrators in Virginia following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee into his neck.Earlier this month, Virginia Gov. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP and KGTV) — A bill that would end California's bail system and replace it with a risk assessment system is headed to Gov. Jerry Brown's desk. State Senate approved the bill with a vote of 26-12 Tuesday afternoon. If signed into law, it would make California the first state to completely end bail for suspects waiting for trial. Senators who support the bill say it would end a system that discriminates against low income people. Those in opposition argue that the measure would make communities less safe. If signed into law, the plan calls for the release of most suspects arrested for nonviolent misdemeanors within 12 hours. Those accused of serious, violent felonies wouldn't be released before their trials. Courts and California's Judicial Council would have discretion to determine whether or not to release other suspects based on the likelihood they will return to court and the danger they pose to the public.   999

Retailers pulled some name brand dog food from store shelves after a euthanasia drug was found in several products."I was a little surprised, but at the same time you hear all sorts of stuff about what is and what isn't in dog food," said Sam Porach, pet owner.The FDA started an investigation after a TV station tested several cans of Gravy Train dog food and found 60 percent contained pentobarbital, a drug used to euthanize animals, found in some products."It's a tranquilizing drug that is sometimes used by veterinarians in animal shelters to reduce anxiety in animals and ultimately put them to sleep," said Jackie Bowen, the executive director of Clean Label Project.The Clean Label Project is a non-profit aimed at educating people about toxins in products, including pet food."This industry needs to do a lot more testing and be a lot more critical of the ingredients used in its products," said Bowen.The J.M. Smucker Co. owns the brands in question including Gravy Train, Kibble 'N Bits, Skippy and Ol' Roy.  The company is investigating how pentobarbital got into the supply chain."One possible way is through contaminated ingredients," Bowen said.Between recalls and reading labels, pet owners are left trying to navigate what's really safe."Try to go all natural type yah know baked treats and stuff," pet owner Ryan Searle said."I feel like there's been a pretty big movement lately on knowing what's in your dogs' food and having higher quality foods," Porach said.Smucker's said the low level of the drug found in the food does not pose a threat to pets, but admit it's not acceptable. Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a law that will make the state the first to allow employers, co-workers and teachers to seek gun violence restraining orders against other people.The bill was vetoed twice by former governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat, and goes beyond a measure that he signed allowing only law enforcement officers and immediate family members to ask judges to temporarily take away peoples' guns when they are deemed a danger to themselves or others.They were among 15 gun-related laws Newsom approved as the state strengthens what the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence calls the nation's toughest restrictions."California has outperformed the rest of the nation, because of our gun safety laws, in reducing the gun murder rate substantially compared to the national reduction," Newsom said as he signed the measures surrounded by state lawmakers. "No state does it as well or comprehensively as the state of California, and we still have a long way to go."Newsom also signed into law AB 893, which prohibits gun and ammunition sales at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Todd Gloria in February. The ban is set to go into effect in 2021.Anyone who violates the law could face a misdemeanor charge, according to the bill. Russia's Foreign Ministry ordered the expulsion of 23 British diplomats from Russia on Saturday in a tit-for-tat response to Britain's decision to expel Russian envoys in connection with the poisoning of a former Russian double agent and his daughter on British soil.The ministry also declared it was closing the British Consulate General in St. Petersburg and the British Council in Russia, in a step beyond the measures taken by Britain.
