BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The government and enterprises should continue to step up efforts in pollution and emission control to ensure targets set previously are met, according to a meeting of the State Council.The government should "slack no efforts" to cut pollutants and emissions to meet the targets as the situation remains "grave", according to a statement issued Wednesday after the councils' executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.The government set the goal to cut emissions of major pollutants, sulfur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 10 percent from 2006 to 2010, the 11th Five-Year Plan period.According to the meeting, the central task at present is to ensure pollution treatment facilities run normally.Vigorous efforts should be made to cut pollution from sectors including thermal power, iron and steel, non-ferrous metal, cement, paper making making, chemical, brewing and printing and dyeing, it said.The statement said the toughest standards should be applied in the management of water resources to ensure safe drinking water for people.Emissions of sulfur dioxide in China dropped 10.4 percent last year compared with that of 2008, Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian said Monday.Zhou said the country's COD and emissions of sulfur dioxide fell for four consecutive years after the targets were set at the beginning of 2006.
BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, concluded its three-day session Friday, after approving the National Defense Mobilization Law and an amendment to the Copyright Law.President Hu Jintao signed decrees to publish the new Law and the amendment to the Copyright Law, which will take effect on July 1 and April 1 respectively.The concluding meeting was presided over by Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.The National Defense Mobilization Law "is significant for enhancing the country's national defense building, strengthening mobilization ability for national defense, as well as for safeguarding national security and ensuring economic and social development," Wu said.The top legislator warned of the "pressing task" of ensuring food safety, and called for improving the country's food safety supervision network.Final preparations were made during the bimonthly session for the upcoming 11th NPC annual session.The session was a very important meeting for expressing ideas about how the country could further develop, Wu said.He urged all the NPC Standing Committee members to listen to the opinions of NPC deputies who would attend the annual session, and fully respect their democratic rights.The Standing Committee approved the draft agenda of the upcoming annual session and a work report by the 11th NPC Standing Committee which is to be delivered by Wu at the session.The top legislature Friday appointed Wu Shuangzhan, Peng Xiaofeng, Liu Yongzhi, Liu Zhenwu, Ge Zhenfeng, and Fu Tinggui as vice chairpersons of six special committees under the NPC respectively.The Credentials Committee of the NPC Standing Committee examined the qualification of deputies to the 11th NPC. BEIJING, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health (MOH) on Sunday released an inclusive list of illustrations on medicine use as guidance for doctors in writing prescriptions. It is the first state-level list of its kind in the country.The list illustrates what each kind of medicine should be used for, but it is not mandatory. Medicines on the list include all those on the National Basic Medicine Catalogue and the Catalogue of Drugs for Basic National Medical Insurance, and some other frequently used medicine, the ministry said.Cao Guirong, president of the Chinese Hospital Association, said at the release ceremony that compilation of the list borrowed the experience of developed countries and the World Health Organization (WHO) while taking into account China's geographic features and clinical therapeutic habits.It took two years for more than 100 domestic medical and pharmaceutical experts to complete the list, Cao said. It would be handed out to hospitals nationwide within the next few days in an effort to promote better medical service.
