ZHENGZHOU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Indian President Pratibha Patil on Saturday visited an ancient Buddhist temple in central China that is believed to be the starting point for Buddhism's spread from India into China.Patil toured the White Horse Temple in Luoyang City, Henan Province, accompanied by the temple's abbot Shi Yinle, and inaugurated an Indian-style Buddhist hall as a gift to China.A Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) emperor ordered the construction of the temple in honor of two Indian monks and horses that carried Buddhist scriptures and Buddha statues from India to the then capital Luoyang in 67 AD.During Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to India in 2005, the two countries agreed to build the Indian-style hall in the temple to commemorate the long history of bilateral ties.The 3,450-sq-m hall was funded by the Indian government and constructed by the Chinese side, the first of its kind outside of India.Wang Zhizhen, vice chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, also attended the inauguration ceremony.Following the visit, Patil left Henan for the ongoing World Expo in Shanghai, the last leg of her week-long state visit to China.During her visit, the two sides agreed to boost cultural exchange and people-to-people contact.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- China's economic development environment remains "very complex" with difficulties and problems persisting in the process of its economic recovery, said the State Council Wednesday.The national economy was heading toward the goal of macroeconomic regulation, with a strong foundation for economic recovery, said a statement released after a Wednesday executive meeting of the State Council, the Cabinet, chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.The fast economic growth can be, to a large extent, attributed to the stimulus package.As the economic recovered, old difficulties remained and new problems emerged, said the statement.With trade protectionism on the rise and major economies suffering from climbing unemployment rates, uncertainties remained in the global economy, said the statement.Severe drought in southwestern China, how to increase grain production and rural people's income, growing inflation expectations, especially soaring housing prices, managing financial risks, and pressure of increasing unemployment were posing great challenges to the economy, said the Cabinet."We should never rest in the face of these problems and difficulties," said the statement.In resolving the problems, China would give top priority to speeding up the transformation of the economic development mode and improving the quality of economic growth, according to the statement.The government would introduce measures to boost agricultural production, improve financial management and regulation, stabilize prices, rein in soaring property prices, expand domestic demand, push forward economic restructuring, increase energy saving and emission cuts, enhance the opening-up policy and improve the people's livelihood.

BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo met here Thursday with President of Malaysian Senate Wong Foon Meng, vowing to enhance parliamentary exchanges.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China and Malaysia were close neighbors, and the bilateral ties had further developed since the two countries forged the strategic and cooperative partnership in 2004.The two countries had strengthened political trust, economic and trade cooperation, personnel exchanges, and coordination in international and regional affairs, he said.Malaysia is a member of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) and forged diplomatic ties with China in 1974."Expanding relations with Malaysia is in the interest of the two peoples and conducive to regional peace and prosperity, and will push forward the cooperation between China and the ASEAN," Wu said.He noted the NPC had maintained sound relations with the Malaysian parliament, but still closer cooperation and exchanges in different forms were needed.Wong Foon Meng voiced his hope to promote exchanges between the parliament members of the two countries.Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, also met with Wong Foon Meng Thursday afternoon.

TASHKENT, April 24 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to consolidate cooperation with all the other member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on safeguarding regional security and promoting collective prosperity, Chinese Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu said here Friday.Meng, also a Chinese State Councilor, made the remarks at the fifth session of the SCO Security Council Secretaries, which drew interior and public security ministers of SCO member states to prepare for a June summit of the organization in Tashkent.The SCO, a regional security organization founded in 2001, consists of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.Meng said that against the backdrop of complicated global and regional situations, it is important for SCO countries to deepen practical cooperation and safeguard regional stability by further coordinating cooperative mechanisms within the SCO framework.It was also important to seek collaboration and utilize various resources, he said.Meng noted the lingering effects triggered by the global financial crisis on economy and society, as well as the continuing threats from terrorism, extremism and separatism on regional security. The country is the last of the 246 participants to open its pavilion."After decades of isolation under circumstances of sanctions and wars, I believe my country is in acute need for such an event (Expo)," Adel Hameed, 35, a teacher in Baghdad western district of Mansour told Xinhua."As a developing nation, Iraq found Shanghai a great place to demonstrate the latest technologies that we need to rebuild our country," said Hameed, who disclosed that he sometimes follows the latest news about the Shanghai Expo from Internet at home.Asked what makes him so interested in following the Expo news, he smiled and said "to me Baghdad is the city with glorious past and promising future.
