(KGTV and AP) - Two suspects are in custody in the United States in connection with the deaths of nine women and children in northern Mexico, relatives of the victims report. Bryan LeBaron said Thursday U.S. officials told the family that two suspects had been detained in the United States, but did not specify what role they had played in the Nov. 4 ambush attack. Earlier this week, prosecutors said more than 40 suspects have now been identified in connection with the killings of the extended Langford and LeBaron families who have lived in northern Mexico for decades. Three mothers and six children were killed; eight others were injured. The victims were dual citizens of Mexico and the United States, and part of a Mormon community of about 3,000 members living in Mexico. (KGTV) -- A small plane was forced to land on a freeway in San Clemente Monday, but no injuries were reported and no vehicles were hit.According to the California Highway Patrol, the emergency landing was reported shortly before 12:50 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near Basilone Road, north of Camp Pendleton.CHP officials said the pilot was flying from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to San Diego’s Montgomery Field when his plane began having mechanical issues while over Camp Pendleton.The pilot, who has 18 years of flying experience, was aware he needed to land immediately and considered Highway 101 [Old Pacific Highway parallel to I-5] as an emergency landing spot before choosing I-5, according to the CHP.The pilot was able to wait for a break in vehicles before guiding the aircraft safely onto the freeway. The plane landed and came to a stop on the No. 4 lane before it was eventually moved to the right shoulder.The aircraft remained on the shoulder and off the freeway lanes as of 2:20 p.m.The pilot, who was the aircraft's only occupant, was unhurt, an FAA official told ABC 10News. The official said the plane was a single-engine Piper PA24.The CHP said the pilot credited his experience and luck for safely landing the plane. 1258

(KGTV) - California regulators are considering a plan to charge a fee for text messaging on mobile phones to help fund programs that make phone service accessible to the poor.The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is set to consider the proposal in a vote scheduled for next month, according to The Mercury News. It's not clear how much mobile phone users would be asked to pay under the proposal, but it would likely be billed as a flat surcharge, not a per-text fee, according to the paper.And wireless industry and business groups are not "LOLing." The groups are reportedly already trying to defeat the proposal before it makes its way to the commission.“It’s a dumb idea,” Jim Wunderman, president of the Bay Area Council business-sponsored advocacy group, told the Mercury News. “This is how conversations take place in this day and age, and it’s almost like saying there should be a tax on the conversations we have.”The new surcharges could generate a total of about .5 million a year, according to business groups. (KGTV) - A San Diego student's death initially prompted the construction of the bridge that collapsed Thursday at Florida International University.Alexis Dale, an 18-year-old FIU freshman from San Diego, died in August 2017 when she was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Southwest 8th Street and 109th Avenue near the school, according to the Miami Herald.Dale had just started studying information technology in June, the Herald reported.RELATED: Pedestrian bridge collapse at university in Miami kills at least oneThe bridge that collapsed Thursday was being built at the intersection where Dale died as a way for people to cross the busy street safely.At least eight people were trapped and at least one person died due to the bridge collapse in Miami."I am heartbroken at the news of the collapse of the pedestrian bridge on 8th Street and the resulting devastation.
