SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Doorbell cameras show teen pranks getting more destructive and some wonder if the cameras themselves could be sparking some of the damage. Videos of young kids playing 'Ding Dong Ditch' with doorbells are nothing new, but some teens are now taking it to another level. "Very disturbing," said Lilly, a homeowner who lives on Hilltop Drive in Chollas View. In the last few months on three different occasions, rocks or bottles have been thrown at her home and car. Her car's back window was shattered during one incident. "All the kids were laughing and running away," said Lilly.Each time, she caught at least one middle-school-aged boy running from her home. Several cameras are clearly mounted on the front of her house. In one video from the past week, a groups of boys walks past her lawn and one of them rips out her solar lights. Last Tuesday night in Lemon Grove, three teens are seen walking in front of a home. Suddenly when one walks toward the door, motioning to his leg. With a big smile on his face, the teen kicks the door forcefully and runs off. The homeowner posted on the Neighbors by Ring app that it caused major damage to his frame and paint. In that case, the doorbell camera was again in plain sight. They're meant to deter crime and they often do, but could surveillance camera in these cases be adding to the motivation for these teens? One San Diegan posting on the app about 'truth-or-dare games' in his neighborhood with young kids and dares involving surveillance cameras."Really scary to think these are younger kids with young minds making horrible choices ... They know they can be caught and do it anyways," said Lilly."Some teens can be drawn to doing stupid things in front of thee camera because of the thrill and excitement, and because that age group is more prone to not thinking about the consequences," said Dr. Mark Kalish, a forensic psychiatrist. 1920

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded after a fire broke out in an abandoned building in San Diego’s Lincoln Park neighborhood Saturday morning. The fire started inside a building on Ocean View Boulevard and 47th Street around 9:30 a.m. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen from miles away. The building that caught fire is owned by a nearby church. According to a church official, the building was used to help house the homeless. The official told 10News the church recently told those staying in the building they had to leave after several incidents.At this time, it’s unclear what started the fire or if anyone was injured. "This fire has been stopped. Crews will be here for a few hours. Please use caution if you are in the area but take alternate routes if possible," San Diego Fire-Rescue said in a Tweet. 833

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite a recent surge in attendance and stock prices, SeaWorld Entertainment Tuesday announced 125 job cuts company-wide.Interim CEO John Reilly said in the company’s earnings report Monday that the company identified million of “additional cost reductions.”A spokesperson for the company said the restructuring affects all the company’s theme parks as well as corporate offices, located in Orlando.RELATED: SeaWorld To Eliminate 350 Jobs, Including 80 In San DiegoOther than SeaWorld parks, the company also owns Sesame Place and Bush Gardens parks. SeaWorld said all affected employees would get severance benefits.Last fall, the company cut 350 positions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Even though Americans could start getting vaccinated in days, experts say people who get the shot will still need to wear masks and practice social distancing until scientists can answer a key question: whether immunized people can continue to spread COVID-19.The clinical trials by Pfizer and Moderna showed the two vaccines were about 95 percent effective, but what that really means is they were 95 percent effective at preventing COVID-19 symptoms.The trials did not measure whether vaccinated volunteers got infected without showing symptoms.That means “it is possible and conceivable” that immunized individuals could still be silent spreaders, said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “You’re not going to get sick, but you still get an asymptomatic case, pass it on to your grandmother and kill her.”Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are injected into the arm muscle to stimulate production of antibodies. From there, the antibodies can quickly get to the lungs to fend off severe infection. But experts say the antibodies may have less access to the nose and throat, the primary entry points for the virus.Some studies have suggested that people without symptoms can still have high enough levels of coronavirus in their nose to infect other people.“The vaccine is doing something to prevent disease. We don't really know yet if it prevents transmission,” said Dr. Ramers. “So we have to fall back on all those fundamental things like distancing, masking and washing hands.”Still, experts say there are encouraging clues that vaccinated people may be less contagious. A study in October found antibody levels in the blood were similar to levels in saliva.AstraZeneca had volunteers in its trial test themselves for signs of infection and reported there were fewer asymptomatic cases. However, the company has not yet provided details and its vaccine relies on different technology than Pfizer and Moderna’s mRNA candidates.Until we know more, doctors say vaccinated people will have to keep wearing masks -- potentially until there we achieve herd immunity.“There is modeling to suggest that it will be summer until we reach the point where there are enough people vaccinated that this curve of new cases really starts to go down,” Ramers said.There’s a chance we could get good news before then. Both Pfizer and Moderna say they’ll start testing their volunteers’ blood to reveal if they got infected after vaccination.Pfizer plans to examine a subset of its volunteers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Derek Swenningsen isn't the typical for trainer for puppies who go to become service animals but right now, volunteers like him are all Tender Loving Canines had. "We're making arrangements and trying to recruit new volunteers to take those puppies until volunteer programs inside prisons can pick back up again," said Victoria Cavaliere with TLC. TLC's 8-week-old puppies started out in prisons where inmates train them before they went to helping those in need. "We teach incarcerated individuals who are in the program how to train dogs to become service dogs using only positive reinforcement."But since COVID-19, they had to switch gears. "We’re looking for someone who is just passionate about the mission and has the time to open up their homes to having a puppy in their home," allowing those like Swenningsen to take their place as trainers."I feel obligated to do my best and make sure Fiji gets the best he can to make it through the program and help a fellow veteran out."Veterans and those who have disabilities or other medical conditions relied on service animals, putting TLC's dogs in demand, even amid a pandemic."To take a dog from a little puppy and mold it into what you want it to be which is this amazing superhero for someone with a disability and help give them independence and get them out of their homes and be part of the world."TLC partnered with Guide Dogs of America and has been in service for 20 years. Cavaliere said their program helped those with disabilities and medical conditions, and inmates as well."Individuals training these dogs are learning about the science of behavior and its helping them with their rehabilitation. They’ll be our neighbors someday so hopefully it’ll reduce recidivism so there’s a good benefit there." 1796
