SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego brewery is helping locals who find themselves in the kitchen more during California's stay at home order try their hands at bread making.Mission Brewery is offering small bags of dried yeast for free to community members in need."As a bread baker myself, I realized that yeast has become almost impossible to find on grocery shelves because of the COVID-19 crisis," says Mission Brewery owner Dan Selis. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A lawsuit was filed on Monday in San Diego County Superior Court against the County of San Diego, Registrar of Voters and other entities related to the ongoing battle over the future of the Julian volunteer fire department. Attorney and mayoral candidate Cory Briggs filed the suit and told 10News that the claim is that a group of former volunteer fire department board members made the decision to dissolve the department in secret meetings, and the County allegedly let it happen. For the past two years, locals have been in a contentious battle over the future of San Diego County's last all-volunteer fire department. Many residents believe the County should take over the department because it has more resources and money.Opponents don't trust the County and think that the department's volunteers can do a better job on their own. This morning, an independent regulatory agency conducted a final vote in favor of dissolving the department. A hearing on this new lawsuit is scheduled for Wednesday morning. 1041

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Carlos couple says they were amazed after reaching out to neighbors about gifting some holiday cheer to those in need.Twas the time before Christmas, and the Kvendru home in San Carlos bears similarities to Santa’s workshop."Not a lot of space on the counters. It's like a hoarder home," laughed Renae Kvendru.For Renae Kvendru and her husband David, the journey to this moment began eight holidays ago, when they handed out some 12 Ziploc bags filled with supplies to the homeless. Since then, their efforts have grown slowly every year.This year, they decided to appeal to their neighbors on the Nextdoor app for supplies."The response was overwhelming and extremely heartwarming. I was expecting 20 jackets, and I got hundreds," said Kvendru.Their converted garage is filled with boxes of donations, including other clothing items, gloves, shoes and umbrellas. The couple also plans to hand out COVID-prevention kits."We made COVID bags ... a couple of masks, hand sanitizer, and wipes," said Kvendru.In all, the couple has put together some 300 gift bags and stockings filled with snacks and toiletries, including some special bags for kids that come with a stuffed animal.Renae gets emotional when talking about a gift she received as a child."I grew up poor, though I was never on the streets and always had food. One year, I think it was Toys for Tots ... some big truck came by our house and gave me a big teddy bear. There are pictures of me hugging that teddy bear. Just remembered how happy that teddy bear used to make me as a kid. If you can give someone that moment, that’s pretty awesome," said Kvendru.Starting this weekend, the couple will drive through areas with homeless populations and start passing out their holiday gifts."If you can help make one person’s day a little brighter, you’ve done good ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Point Loma woman says while her family was sleeping, someone was in her home stealing from them.Tucked away on a hill along scenic La Crescentia Drivel, the serenity was interrupted when Teresa Cesear and her husband got up around 5 a.m. Wednesday."Panic, absolutely panic," said Cesear.Cesear says her purse and laptop bag — computer inside — were not where she had placed them on her kitchen stool.Reality quickly set in. Those items didn't disappear on their own. "My entire personal and work life were in those two bags. Then came the fear and sense of violation," said Cesear.The violation happened quietly as she, her husband, and her grown son slept."The police said that they must have looked in the window. There's a nightlight in the kitchen, so they see my laptop and purse and somehow got this locked kitchen door open," said Cesear.Among the missing items were credit cards, keys and one special key: The original key to her 1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia."Really sad ... It's an important part of it because it's a very unique key," said Cesear.The break-in is the second burglary in her cul-de-sac in the past few months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new lot meant to give people living in their cars and RVs a safe place to sleep and avoid citation is going largely unused.During Tuesday morning's wee hours, the lot across from SDCCU Stadium looked completely empty. San Diego opened the lot in mid-June, as the third safe parking lot for those who live in their vehicles. The newest one came a month after the council enacted an emergency ordinance that banned people from living in cars and recreational vehicles on public streets from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The city enacted the restriction after being inundated with safety concerns from residents who said people were camping in their beach front neighborhoods, leaving human waste, and trash. At Mission Bay on Tuesday, many who do live in their vehicles said they would prefer to stay near the coast, despite the threat of citation. "They don't know about it, and maybe it's not that convenient either," said Gary Parsons, who lives inside his Dodge Ram. "Inside I put in some carpet, and some shelving, and I sleep on the floor."Chris Enders, who lives in an RV with his wife and son, said they spend their nights on unchecked private property, such as parking lots near the beach. He said the Mission Valley location is not feasible."When you're getting five miles a gallon in gas, that's .75 just to get there, and then to get back that's another .75 so you just cost me ... for one day," said Enders.The lot requires all vehicles to be out by 7 a.m. daily. Ashley Bailey, a spokeswoman for the mayor, said the city and Jewish Family Service are working to bring more people to the lot."In partnership with Jewish Family Service, teams are continuing to conduct outreach and seek feedback to ensure everyone who wants to use this lot has the opportunity to do so," she said in a statement.
