SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department says it has resumed conducting pre-pandemic evictions but continues to make that decision on a case-by-case basis.The department said in a statement that it served 12 evictions in July."The priority of enforcement focused on vacant locations or locations with reports of criminal activity. When possible, deputies conducted pre-eviction interviews and offered community resources to those who may need them at the pre-eviction interview and on the day of the lockout," SDSO's statement read.Of the 12 evictions last month, one was at a commercial property and 11 were at residential properties.Of the 11 properties, six were occupied and five were abandoned, SDSO said. In four of the six properties, deputies said criminal activities had taken place at the residences.At the fifth location, deputies say they found an elderly woman who was suffering from mental illness with health concerns and living with no heat or water. She was taken to a hospital.SDSO said the court order for the sixth location was about to expire so it had to be served.Last month, San Diego City Council leaders voted to extend a rent payback period on renters who have lost income due to COVID-19 until December 30. Renters are also required to follow the rules in leases, but landlords cannot evict a tenant for nonpayment due to COVID-19. 1380
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thirty years ago, an enraged socialite snuck into her ex-husband's Hillcrest home and became one of the most notorious killers in San Diego history."She was hellbent on getting her pound of flesh, hellbent on revenge," said Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs, who was there at both hearings in which Betty Broderick was denied parole, the most recent one nearly three years ago. It was three decades ago when Broderick first captured a nation's attention as police descended on a Hillcrest mansion on Cypress Avenue."It was shocking, like we were watching a movie," said neighbor Linda Walter.RELATED: Convicted killer Betty Broderick sends card from prison to 10NewsOn that Nov. 5, 1989, around 5:30 a.m., Broderick stole her daughter's key and walked into the home, before shooting and killing her ex-husband Dan Broderick and new wife, Linda Kolkena Broderick, in their bed.In a high-profile trial, Broderick took the stand and claimed her ex-husband was abusive. The jury didn't buy it, finding her guilty on two counts of second degree murder. The case spawned numerous books and a made-for-TV movie detailing a scorned woman's escalating rage. In it, she claimed she was "gang raped" by the "crooked courts," adding that her ex-husband used his power as a lawyer to "threaten" and "intimidate" her for years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people were injured following a pursuit in Otay Mesa Monday afternoon.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies pulled the truck over around 2 p.m. for an unspecified traffic infraction.The driver, later identified as Christian Eduardo Saldana Medina, 26, stopped and cooperated with deputies.While deputies were checking records, Medina sped away at a “high rate of speed.” Deputies chased Medina for less than two miles before the truck ran into a tractor trailer at the corner of Pacific Rim Court and Camino Maquiladora.All three people inside the truck at the time of the crash were taken to the hospital, one by helicopter.Medina was arrested for felony evading and felony evading with injuries. A passenger, Edgar Quintana Valenzuela, 38, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia. 895
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Wednesday voted 4-1 in favor of Otay Ranch Resort Village 13, a mixed-use community to be developed near the city of Chula Vista.When completed, Otay Ranch Resort Village will feature 1,938 homes, a fire station, sheriff's station, trails, an elementary school, parks and open space, according to a county staff presentation."We must have more housing that is well-planned, that is walkable, bikeable, and smart net zero housing such as this proposal," said nearby resident Richard Richardson.Proposed by developers Baldwin & Sons and Moller Otay Lakes Investments, Otay Ranch Village is located less than a mile east of the city of Chula Vista and 12 miles southwest of the community of Jamul.The county Planning Commission voted 4-2 in favor of approval, and the county Planning & Development Services department also recommended approval.Several environmental groups urged the board to table the project until the county resolves issues over its Climate Action Plan, along with species protection concerns and wildfire hazards."The amount of greenhouse gas here is substantial," said Dr. Peter Andersen, a Jamul resident and member of the Sierra Club. Board Chairman Greg Cox said the project has "gone above and beyond" to address greenhouse gas emissions.Cox said the county is facing a housing shortage emergency, and Otay Ranch Resort Village is "one that's better designed than most I've seen" in terms of fire safety. "I believe this is a good project that checks all the boxes," he added.Although he praised the overall project, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher cast the lone no vote."My reluctance today is that we're very close to resolving a series of lawsuits and there's an effort to get a legally enforceable climate action plan, and then we can assess this project," he said.The county's plan has been the subject of several legal challenges. In June, a three-judge panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal in San Diego also found that reliance on carbon offsets was not legal, and shouldn't be used as a mechanism to allow general plan amendments to move forward.Fletcher said that while the Otay Village project is consistent with the density requirements in the county General Plan, his concerns over the use of carbon offsets prevented him from voting yes on Wednesday.Supervisor Jim Desmond said that despite problems with the Climate Action Plan, the county shouldn't have to stop all development.The board vice chairman also said that Otay Ranch Resort Village 13 complies with the county's Multiple Species Conservation Program, and received the blessing of San Diego County Fire Chief Tony Mecham. "This project of all the projects [brought] before this board is probably the safest from a fire safety standpoint," he said.
