SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Murder and robbery charges were filed Friday against two young men who prosecutors allege are responsible for the death of a Rancho Bernardo teen who was run over by a car in a drug robbery gone wrong.Angel Ramirez, 19, and Joshua Benjamin, 20, are accused in the March 7, 2019, death of a 16-year-old boy identified in court papers only as Christian H.Deputy District Attorney Christina Eastman alleges the defendants -- who entered not guilty pleas -- robbed the victim and, in the process of fleeing the scene, ran over the boy's head with their vehicle.RELATED: Arrest made in death of teen found in Rancho Bernardo streetAccording to the prosecutor, the victim had sought to purchase 0 worth of narcotics from Ramirez, who traveled with Benjamin to the teen's home in the 16800 block of Cresta Drive. When the teen handed his money to Ramirez, who was sitting in the backseat, Benjamin sped away, she alleged.Eastman said the victim hung onto the open rear car window in an attempt to get the drugs or his money back. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man smashed a display case at a Mira Mesa jewelry store and stole several necklaces, police said Tuesday.The theft was reported shortly after 6:50 p.m. Monday at Daniel's Jewelers in the shopping center near Mira Mesa Boulevard and Camino Ruiz, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man entered the store and smashed a glass display case with a hammer, Buttle said, adding that the thief did not threaten the employee.The thief then grabbed several necklaces from the display case and fled in an unknown direction, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 Black man in his late 20s. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Animal Planet TV series focusing on the San Diego Zoo and the zoo's Safari Park will premiere Saturday, offering audiences a behind-the-scenes view of the zoo's daily activities."The Zoo: San Diego" will debut with two one-hour episodes titled "Welcome to Our World" and "New Day for an Old Tortoise." The series will follow animal care staff members, veterinarians, scientists and researchers at the zoo, Safari Park and the zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.The first episode will feature a baby klipspringer's birth and first days at the zoo, research into why a species of pit viper is having spinal issues and conservation work on the California condor population. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A report published Wednesday by the UC San Diego School of Medicine found that older adults use cannabis primarily for medical purposes to treat a variety of common health conditions, including pain, sleep disturbances and psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression.The study, published online in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found that of 568 patients surveyed, 15% had used cannabis within the past three years, with half of users reporting using it regularly and mostly for medical purposes."Pain, insomnia and anxiety were the most common reasons for cannabis use and, for the most part, patients reported that cannabis was helping to address these issues, especially with insomnia and pain," said Christopher Kaufmann, co-first author of the study and assistant professor in UCSD's division of geriatrics and gerontology.Patients surveyed in the study were seen at the Medicine for Seniors Clinic at UC San Diego Health over a period of 10 weeks.The researchers also found that 61% of the patients who used cannabis started after they turned 60."These individuals were a unique group compared to those who used cannabis in the past. New users were more likely to use cannabis for medical reasons than for recreation," said Kevin Yang, co-first author and medical student at UCSD."The route of cannabis use also differed with new users more likely to use it topically as a lotion rather than by smoking or ingesting as edibles. Also, they were more likely to inform their doctor about their cannabis use, which reflects that cannabis use is no longer as stigmatized as it was previously," Yang said.With the rise in availability of CBD-only products, which are non- psychoactive cannabinoids in contrast to THC-containing products, the researchers said it is likely that future surveys will continue to document a larger proportion of older adults using cannabis or cannabis-based products for the first time."The findings demonstrate the need for the clinical workforce to become aware of cannabis use by seniors and to gain awareness of both the benefits and risks of cannabis use in their patient population," said Dr. Alison Moore, senior author and chief of the division of geriatrics at UCSD's School of Medicine. "Given the prevalence of use, it may be important to incorporate evidence-backed information about cannabis use into medical school and use screening questions about cannabis as a regular part of clinic visits."The researchers said future studies are needed to better understand the efficacy and safety of different formulations of cannabis in treating common conditions in older adults, both to maximize benefit and minimize harm. 2711
