The Los Angeles Times reports the owner plans to turn the 91-year-old building into a hotel where a select group of members buys into "a piece of a portfolio of the best real estate in the world." Members will own shares of the property and pay regular fees to cover management costs. LONDON — A new study by researchers at Oxford University suggests that time spent playing video games can be good for mental health. The finding comes as video game sales this year have boomed as more people are stuck at home because of the pandemic and many countries have once again imposed limits on public life. The paper released Monday is based on survey responses from people who played two games, Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In a first, the study used data provided by the game makers, Electronic Arts and Nintendo of America, on how much time the respondents spent playing, unlike previous research that relied on imprecise estimates from the players. The researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute said they found the actual amount of time spent playing was a small but significant positive factor in people’s well-being.The paper, which hasn’t been peer reviewed, said the level of enjoyment that players get from a game could be a more important factor for their well-being than mere playing time.The results could cast doubt on long-held assumptions that gaming causes aggression or addiction, though the authors acknowledge they are only a snapshot.“Our findings show video games aren’t necessarily bad for your health; there are other psychological factors which have a significant effect on a persons’ well-being,“ said Andrew Przybylski, the institute’s director of research. “In fact, play can be an activity that relates positively to people’s mental health – and regulating video games could withhold those benefits from players.” 1693

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The state's Franchise Tax Board announced Thursday new tax-filing relief for people affected by wildfires that broke out in San Diego County and other counties throughout the state in September.Taxpayers in areas that were declared disaster areas by Gov. Gavin Newsom are granted an extension until Jan. 15 to file California tax returns on 2019 income and make any tax payments that would have been due between Sept. 4 and Jan. 15."With more time to file and make certain payments, we hope to provide some relief to families and workers affected by these devastating wildfires," State Controller and FTB chair Betty T. Yee said in a statement.The relief applies to various upcoming tax-filing deadlines including:-- individual filers whose previous tax-filing extension was set to end Oct. 15. Any tax payments associated with the filings are not eligible for relief since they were initially due July 15-- business entities with a due date between September and Dec. 15-- quarterly tax payments due Sept. 15Wildfire victims may also claim a deduction on their 2019 income tax returns or next year's returns for a disaster loss sustained in an area proclaimed by the governor to be in a state of emergency, according to the Franchise Tax Board, which noted that those who have already filed tax returns this year can file an amended return.Taxpayers should write the name of the fire in blue or black ink at the top of their tax returns to alert the Franchise Tax Board. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A member of a downtown Los Angeles street gang caught with thousands of dollars worth of methamphetamine packaged to resemble 14 foil-wrapped burritos was sentenced Monday to 15 years behind bars for federal drug and gun crimes.Ricardo ``Flaco'' Renteria, 48, of Colton, was also ordered to serve five years of supervised release following prison and pay a mandatory special assessment of 0.``He has a very long criminal history,'' Chief U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips said from the bench. ``This was a large amount of methamphetamine -- and the way it was packaged, it was clearly for sale.''According to evidence presented at trial, Los Angeles police officers pulled Renteria over on Feb. 3, 2018, in the Angelino Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles after they witnessed him erratically and evasively driving a white Chevrolet Tahoe.Renteria consented to a search of the SUV and law enforcement found a black garbage bag on the floor behind the driver's seat. Inside the bag were 14 foil-wrapped, burrito-shaped packages containing 13.7 pounds of methamphetamine with a street value ranging from ,000 to ,000.A subsequent search revealed a fully loaded Smith & Wesson .38 Special handgun and more than 0 in cash, evidence showed. Renteria was arrested at the scene and indicted by a federal grand jury in March 2018.After a one-day bench trial in March, Phillips found him guilty of three felonies: possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.At his sentencing hearing, Renteria asked the judge to ``take into consideration (that) I have a family waiting for me -- and I apologize for the situation I find myself in.''But Phillips said that a significant prison sentence was necessary ``to protect the public from further crimes of the defendant.'' LOS ANGELES  - Surveillance video released by the Los Angeles Police Department shows a violent taco truck robbery that left a worker with injuries.Three men entered the truck as it was parked on West Manchester Ave. in South Los Angeles around 3 a.m. on July 14.Police said the men forced the workers to the ground and demanded cash.One worker was pistol-whipped during the hold-up. There is no word on his condition.The suspects were not able to gain access to the safe in the taco truck. They took the workers’ cell phones and cash before leaving, investigators said.Los Angeles Police said the men were last seen running from the location with the victims’ property. They were described as in their 20s with no distinctive physical features.Anyone with information was asked to call the LAPD. 809
