BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday denied claims in a U.S. government report, saying it exaggerated China's military strength."We firmly oppose this report," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a press release when asked to comment on the annual report by the U.S. Defense Department.She said the report exaggerated China's military strength, and unfairly blamed China for some problems that exist in the bilateral military relationship."China unswervingly sticks to a path of peaceful development and pursues a national defense policy which is defensive in nature," Jiang said, noting that China is devoted to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large."We urge the U.S side to respect this fact," she said.Jiang also urged the United States to stop issuing such reports on China's military, and work towards improving relations between the two militaries and the two nations, instead of working against China.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's exports surged by 48.5 percent year on year in May, while the imports climbed 48.3 percent, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Thursday.The growth rate for exports was 18.1 percentage points up from the figure for April, and the import growth rate dipped slightly from 49.7 percent reported in April.Exports totalled 131.76 billion U.S. dollars in May, said a statement on the GAS website, adding imports topped 112.23 billion U.S. dollars.Total foreign trade value rose 48.4 percent from a year earlier to 243.99 billion U.S. dollars in May. BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rainfalls have ended in South China's flood-battered Provinces and water levels of major rivers in Jiangxi and Hunan provinces are receding, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) Sunday.However, flood prevention work must not slow down since risks remain, said the SFDH.Also, water levels in Jiangxi Province's Ganjiang River and Poyang Lake remain higher than normal warning levels and water in Hunan Province's Dongting Lake is still rising.Persistent heavy rains that have devastated parts of south China had, by Saturday, left 379 dead, and 141 missing, and resulted in economic losses estimated at 82.4 billion yuan, the SFDH said.The torrential rains and ensuing floods have affected 68.7 million people in 22 provincial-level regions along with 4.36 million hectares of farmland, said the headquarters.
