SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County public health officials have released guidance for celebrating Halloween this month, including recommendations for trick-or-treating and parties.The county is recommending that residents avoid traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, "trunk-or-treating" where candy is offered from cars, or leaving bowls of candy for others at their door this Halloween due to the pandemic.For those who want to find a safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating, the county recommends "one-way" trick-or-treating where residents leave individually wrapped goodies bags outside for families to grab while maintaining physical distance, such as at the end of the driveway or yard.Parents are also asked to consider giving away treats other than candy, such as stickers, pencils, or mini pumpkins that can be sanitized by parents before given to kids.There are several activities that are not allowed, according to the county, including:In-person gatherings, parties, and events with non-household members even if gatherings are outdoors because physical distancing will not be easy to maintain,Carnivals, petting zoos, festivals, and live entertainment are not allowed because of frequent interaction with high touch surfaces by children and participants, andAny gatherings already not allowed under current public health ordersHaunted houses are not recommended because of the potential for crowds in tight spaces and poor ventilation, making safety and social distancing a challenge.County officials recommend that San Diegans celebrate through:Online parties or costume contestsDrive-thru events and car paradesDecorating homes and yardsMovie nights within households or at drive-in theaters, andPumpkin patches where social distancing and increased hand hygiene is possibleThe county says that whichever way residents end up celebrating Halloween, it's important that they continue to wash and sanitize their hands often and thoroughly, avoid close contact with individuals that are not in the same household, wear a face covering, and stay home and away from others if sick.More Halloween safety resources are available on the county's website. 2175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Beaches in San Diego are expected to be packed for the Fourth of July weekend as other nearby counties shut down their beaches over coronavirus concerns.Local law enforcement agencies are prepared for the influx in beachgoers, but many are hoping and wondering if people will follow San Diego County’s facial covering and social distancing requirements.On Friday, ABC 10News crews observed visitors at Mission Beach keeping their distance from each other and most of them wearing facial coverings.Many visitors came to the beach early to secure spots for what will likely be a busy weekend.The Cotus family, visiting San Diego from Arizona, heard about Gov. Gavin Newsom closing beaches where coronavirus numbers are rising. But the family took the chance that San Diego beaches would stay open.“We figured this morning we got the kids up. OK, let’s take a chance; either we can get to the beach or we can’t. If not, there’s a pool at the hotel,” Edward Cotus said.Law enforcement agencies said they will be out this weekend reminding people about the rules. However, they say it will be up to the public to follow them.The Cotus family said they understand why people don’t like wearing the face coverings, but they believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part in controlling the spread of this virus.“We all have to be responsible and just try to really implement social distancing on our own. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – County leaders are continuing to urge San Diegans that 2020 is not the year to skip the flu shot as we head into colder months amid a nearly year-long pandemic.On Wednesday, the fourth of six flu vaccine clinics was held by San Diego County’s Health and Human Services in Logan Heights. All hands were on deck with nurses from across the county, as more people are heading to the free clinics to get their flu shot this season."This is a year to be vigilant of protecting yourself from influenza and getting a vaccine, so we don't run into a situation where people are not only getting COVID, but getting influenza, and clogging our medical response system," said Thomas Zurek, public health nurse manager with the county.Zurek said while we can't control the spread of COVID-19 with a vaccine, we can when it comes to the spread of influenza, which hits hard during cold months when more people are indoors.Zurek added he hopes the free clinics will help keep people out of hospitals this season so staff can focus patients affected by COVID-19."Our numbers have been above what we're normally than seeing this time of year, which is great," Zurek said.The county will hold two more vaccine clinics Thursday and next Tuesday:Thursday, Oct. 29, at East Public Health Center, 367 N. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 outreach in the Latino community is getting a boost after San Diego County partnered with promotoras to help with contact tracing. Promotoras, which literally means promoters, are bilingual community health workers. The goal is to lower the high number of COVID-19 cases among Latinos in the county. Latinos and Hispanics make up almost 63% of COVID-19 cases in the county, but Latinos make up only 34% of the population.The promotoras are members of the communities where they will be working. The county announced the partnership at the beginning of August and now the promotoras are out in the community helping with contact tracing. The promotoras will work in underserved communities and Latino neighborhoods. ABC 10News spoke to two promotoras working with South Bay Community Services. They are getting ready to start on September 1st. In total, 17 promotoras with the organization will start on that day. They've all received hours of training and are certified contact tracers. The promotoras will have the task of reaching out to the close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases. The contact is made over the phone or via email and text and the promotoras will ask things about testing and if they're presenting any symptoms. The county's partnership also includes promotoras from San Diego State and will include promotoras that speak other languages like Tagalog and Arabic. 1421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Seaworld San Diego reopens its doors this weekend, an East County grandmother and passholder says she and her grandson won't be making a visit.Visiting SeaWorld is one of Rose Becker's favorite things to do with her 4-year-old grandson Vincent."He just loves walking around and looking at the dolphins, orcas, and sea lions," said Becker.So when SeaWorld announced they would be reopening, she got excited.RELATED: Several San Diego County businesses to reopen indoors with limits under new guidance"I was planning on taking him Sunday. Was so excited to hear SeaWorld was back open. My grandson was so excited ... and then my excitement, down to frustration," said Becker.She was frustrated because of the cost. SeaWorld is opening through its weekend Zoo Days Bayside BBQ and Brews events. It's reservation only with a limited capacity. The park's attractions will be limited to outdoor animal exhibits and shows. A ticket will include food, drink, and merchandise. Passholders like Becker get a complimentary ticket but must pay for the lanyard for the food and beverages. In the past few days, ABC 10News has received emails and Facebook messages from passholders upset about having to pay for the extra cost."We're being treated like second class citizens in essence," said Becker.SeaWorld plans to hold the weekend events until late September, and then reassess a true opening.
