SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SANDAG and Caltrans opened a southbound Interstate 5 auxiliary lane in the University City area.The new exit-only lane allows motorists to enter the freeway from Genesee Avenue and continue directly to the La Jolla Village Drive off-ramp without having to merge with freeway traffic.The approximately half-mile auxiliary lane is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and increase overall safety in the area. Prior to its completion, the heavily trafficked southbound I-5 off-ramp to La Jolla Village Drive often caused congestion on the freeway, posing a safety risk to motorists.Construction for the I-5/Genesee Avenue Auxiliary Lane project began in July 2019 and required careful work alongside freeway traffic. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police were searching today for two men suspected of being involved in a shooting on an Encanto street.A man and a woman were standing outside of a parked car on 59th Street near Market Street around 7:20 p.m. Saturday when two men approached them, San Diego Police Sgt. Michael Tansey said. One suspect pulled out a handgun and shot at the male victim, who was hit once in his right ankle. The two suspects ran away north on 59th Street, then west on KenwoodStreet. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Taking swift action after Thursday's San Diego City Council meeting in which a lone franchise utility bid was revealed, Mayor Todd Gloria Friday announced he was rejecting San Diego Gas & Electric's bid for the city's gas and electric utilities.The lone bid revealed Thursday was for million -- the minimum amount set by former Mayor Kevin Faulconer in September for the 20 year contracts -- and many callers into the meeting asked for the council to ask for a one-year extension for the new mayor and councilmembers get up to speed.The Thursday meeting was informational only, but the information was enough for Gloria."After reviewing the bid submitted by SDG&E and consulting with the City Attorney's office, we have determined their bid is unresponsive to the city's invitation to bid. Therefore, I am rejecting the bid and canceling the current ITB process," Gloria said. "I will be pursuing an extension of the existing agreement between the city and SDG&E to allow enough time for the new City Council to get up to speed and more opportunities for public engagement to occur."The council must take action at its next meeting on Jan. 12; the existing franchise agreement with SDG&E expires Jan. 17. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums and townhomes increased between September and October while home prices decreased, according to data released by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Sales of single-family homes increased from 1,605 in September to 1,644 in October, a 2.4 percent jump. Attached property sales rose 8.8 percent from 820 in September to 892 in October.The increases are a minor rebound after SDAR data showed sales of single-family homes and attached properties fell 25 percent from August to September.Monthly home prices dipped slightly for both single-family and attached properties. Single-family prices fell 0.4 percent from 7,000 to 5,000 while condo and townhome prices fell 2.7 percent from 9,000 to 8,000."The temperature of home prices seems to be cooling, which may lead to a period of calm for the rest of the year," SDAR President Steve Fraioli said. "However, the strength of the economy and the strong job market remains great news for buyers and industries related to real estate."Year-over-year increases show significant declines in listings sold and increases in home prices. Single-family home sales fell 16.8 percent from October 2017 to October 2018, from 1,977 to 1,644. Year-over-year condo and townhome sales fell 15.3 percent, from 1,053 to 892.Sale prices rose 6.3 percent for single-family homes, from 7,000 in October 2017 to 5,000 in October 2018. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County officials Saturday said the availability of respirators and the capacity of Intensive Care Unit beds in the county's fight against the coronavirus has actually grown.Dr. Nicholas Yphantides, the county's chief medical officer, said that when he looked at some data Saturday morning he saw "something pretty remarkable.""The availability of ICU beds and the number of respirators that are available has actually grown," Yphantides said.The doctor said there were many technological innovations going on at local hospitals, such as tele-consultations and call-in nurses.He also wanted to remind the public that ventilators do not run themselves."We are very mindful of our most precious commodity, and that is our health care workers," Yphantides said. At a recent town hall forum, he reminded people that doctors and nurses are human, too,"We are really in the eye of the storm right now," the chief medical officer said. "The hope is that this Category 5 storm can be lessened and become more manageable."Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said he wanted to encourage people to rely on trusted sources of information about the health crisis.The health department will hold another coronavirus briefing on Sunday which will include San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Fletcher.The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in San Diego County saw its highest one-day jump yet when the number rose to 131 on Friday, an increase of 26 cases over the previous day."The message is very clear," County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said. "All Californians are being asked to stay at home if you do not need to go out for essential reasons."The increase in cases included 27 people hospitalized, with seven of the cases involving people aged 80 or older. The vast majority -- 99 cases -- of those who have tested positive have been under the age of 60. One individual's age is unknown.Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statewide "stay-at-home" order Thursday night, advising residents not to leave their homes except for essential needs.Essential services will remain open, including: gas stations, pharmacies, banks, laundromats, and places to obtain food, including grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants.Any other public event or gathering is considered non-essential and is banned under the order until further notice.Health officials have asked local hospitals and laboratories to comply with county orders to report all testing results, positive or negative. If a daycare or related business has more than 10 children, each group needs to be in separate rooms and cannot intermingle.
