Known as the Green Mountain State, Vermont’s bucolic natural beauty offers a sharp contrast to the reality facing some of its residents.“The room you're in here would be busy all day,” said Gary De Carolis, executive director of the Turning Point Center in Burlington, the state’s largest city.Normally, 3,000 people would come to that addiction treatment center each month.“Then, the pandemic hit and, of course, everything just went; everyone just retreated to their homes,” De Carolis said. “And we know that the enemy of recovery is isolation.”The most recent stats available from the state’s Department of Health, from April, show Vermont had 47 opioid-related deaths, which is an increase over the 38 overdose deaths seen at the same time last year.In addition, compared to April of last year, the rate of nonfatal opioid overdoses doubled from 14 percent to 36 percent.Nationwide, the American Medical Association said nearly 40 states have seen spikes in opioid overdoses since the pandemic began.“There is no question that the current COVID pandemic does increase risk factors that we know, even in typical times, are risk factors for overdose, more drug use,” said Dr. Patrice Harris of the American Medical Association.Those risk factors included not having regular access to health care providers and a disconnect from normal routine and community, especially when in-person addiction treatment centers closed all over the country.That’s where telehealth stepped in, up to a point.“However, let's note there that if you didn't have a data plan or phone or computer or access to even broadband, then you weren't able to take advantage of that,” Dr. Harris said.Back in Burlington, via phone calls or Zoom meetings, the Turning Point Center is seeing about 500 clients a month, a fraction of what they would normally see, but no less needed.“Until we have a vaccine, I don't think it'll ever be business as usual,” De Carolis said. “One day at a time, as they say.” 1983

JAMUL (CNS) - A small plane landed in thick grass southeast of Jamul Casino in Jamul Wednesday night, but no one was injured.Deputies received a call of a downed plane about 7:50 p.m. off Campo Road, according to Lt. Glen Twyman of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The type of plane was not released.It was not immediately clear if the plane made an emergency landing or crashed, but neither occupant was injured.Fire crews remained on scene after the crash to prevent any of the nearby dry grass from catching on fire, Twyman said. 550

Just 12 days ago, residents on the US island territory of Puerto Rico were sideswiped by then Category 5 Hurricane Irma. Even with the eye of Irma missing Puerto Rico by 50 miles, the storm knocked out power and did damage. As Category 5 Hurricane Maria churns in the Caribbean late Tuesday, it is expected to strike the island head on. As of Tuesday evening, Maria had top winds of 175 MPH and a minimum pressure of 909 MBs. Although Hurricane Irma had top sustained winds of 185 MPH, Irma's pressure never dropped below 914 MBs. In preparation, President Donald Trump has ordered an emergency declaration, freeing up disaster resources. FEMA Director Brock Long said that the agency is sending extra supplies to the US Virgin Islands, and the Virginia Task Force 1 urban search and rescue team is remaining in Puerto Rico.Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello told NPR that the territory has opened 500 shelter and is expecting "severe devastation.""Our main focus is to shift focus from the recovery process of Irma to make sure everyone is in a safe shelter," Rossello said. Adding to the potential disaster, Puerto Rico's mountainous terrain could cause landslides. JULIAN, Calif. (CNS) - A 63-year-old man died after crashing his pickup into a tree at an RV park near Julian, authorities said Wednesday.The crash happened about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on KQ Ranch Road in the KQ Ranch RV resort, off state Route 79, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said.The victim was driving a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup eastbound when, for unknown reasons, he drove off the north side of the road and slammed into a tree, Garrow said.Witnesses attempted to help the driver until medics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead before he could be airlifted to a hospital, the officer said.The driver's name was withheld pending family notification.Investigators determined that alcohol and/or drugs were suspected factors in the crash and the man was not wearing a seatbelt, Garrow said. 820

(KGTV) - The Granite Lion Cellars in Jamul will break ground Wednesday on a new tasting room and wine cave, adding to their expanding vineyard and winery in the East County."We've been waiting for this for quite a while," says Tasting Room Manager Miriam Valdez. "I"m over the moon that it's finally happening."The multi-million dollar expansion will help Granite Lion deal with the increase of customers they've seen over the past year. Sommelier David Whited says they've gone from about ten visitors each week to 150.It's an excellent problem to have, and one that is spreading up and down Highway 94. "You can do it here, 20 minutes from downtown."The new wine cave and tasting room are the latest sign that the region is gaining in popularity. The first tasting room in the area opened in 2014. Since then, wines along the 94 have won several awards and are starting to pull customers away from Temecula, Ramona and even Baja."As word gets out, people are coming here," says Whited."You arrive, and it's quiet," says Valdez. "It's away from the busy hustle and bustle of the city. You can enjoy nature. You can find a place here to rejuvenate and relax."The San Diego County Vinters Association says there are 116 wineries across the county. A recent report showed they have a million economic impact every year.Whited says the geography in the East County allows vineyards to grow more flavorful grapes commonly found in Europe."There are two mountain ranges that filter in the marine climate into the valley here which sets us apart from anywhere else in San Diego," he says.County Supervisor Diane Jacob is expected to attend Wednesday's event.
