SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California state appeals court has thrown out the sole conviction against an immigrant who fatally shot a woman on the San Francisco waterfront in 2015.The 1st District Court of Appeal on Friday overturned a gun conviction against Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate because the judge failed to instruct the jury on one of his defenses.Garcia-Zarate was acquitted of murder in the killing of Kate Steinle, who was on a pier with her father when she was shot in the back in July 2015.The case of Garcia-Zarate, who was in the country illegally and had been deported five times, touched off a fierce immigration debate. He said he unwittingly picked up the gun wrapped in a T-shirt and it fired accidentally.Garcia-Zarate is in custody and facing federal gun charges. 783

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Nearly 200 realtors and elected officials in San Diego kicked off an innovative program aimed to reduce access to dangerous opioids. Volunteers went door-to-door, handing out information cards and special plastic bags for residents to properly dispose of their unneeded and expired prescription drugs. For the fourth year in a row, the number of San Diegans who died from unintentional drug-related deaths went up. To counter the increasing number of opioid deaths, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, Safe Homes Coalition and the San Diego Association of Realtors launched the “Keep Kids Safe” program.10News followed a group of volunteers who were assigned to walk around the Bay Ho area. “I’m not here to sell a home. I’m here to introduce an opportunity to save lives," real estate broker, Robert Weichelt said. In the last couple of years, he has sene a disturbing trend in his industry. “We had people coming to our open houses, going in to take medicine out of the medicine cabinet," Kevin Burke, CEO of the San Diego Association of Realtors said. Thieves would pose as prospective buyers, then steal prescriptions from the medicine cabinets when they tour the property. That is why more nearly 200 realtors volunteered their Saturday to spread the word about disposing of unneeded or expired prescription drugs. Flushing pills down the drain causes pollution. Instead, they are distributing 100,000 special prescription bags that could be taken to one of 20 disposal sites in San Diego County, so they do not land in the wrong hands. Sandy Nolan lost her son, Jerry, to a heroin overdose almost 11 years ago. His gateway drug was inside of their home. “It all started with prescription drugs," Nolan said. That is why she is so passionate about eliminating access to dangerous opioids. “When you’re done with that prescription, and you don’t need it anymore, get it in that bag, take it to the disposal spots, and get it out of your house, right away," Nolan said. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A U.S. judge in San Francisco has refused to immediately allow the Trump administration to enforce a ban on asylum for any immigrants who illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border.Judge Jon Tigar on Friday rejected the Justice Department's request to suspend his earlier order temporarily blocking the ban. Tigar said the administration had still not shown that the ban was legal. At issue is President Donald Trump's Nov. 9 proclamation that barred anyone who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border between official ports of entry from seeking asylum. Trump issued the proclamation in response to caravans of migrants approaching the border.Tigar on Nov. 19 sided with legal groups who argued that federal law is clear that immigrants in the U.S. can request asylum regardless of whether they entered legally. 827

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- This Christmas local chefs and volunteers gave the gift of gourmet meals for those in need. It was a two day process. “Just Call Us” Volunteers prepared the food, from scratch, before serving it to the homeless. The volunteers made enough to feed over 400 people. Early this afternoon, the chefs and volunteers delivered the food to three different shelters. The largest being the Alpha Project tent, in Downtown. “We all appreciate it. They all deserve a good meal,” says a staff member with the Alpha Project. Over a dozen volunteers donated their time at the Alpha Project. More volunteers visited Rachel’s Women’s Shelter and San Diego Center for Children. All of the items are donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Market. Just Call Us Volunteers gives back to those in need year around. They encourage everyone to come spread a little cheer throughout the year. 925

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV) — Despite the state and county's public health restrictions, some churches are planning to welcome people inside on a limited basis.San Diego County remains on the state's COVID-19 monitoring list. That means, as of July 15, 2020, indoor activities at Houses of worship are not allowed. But some are back to opening up their doors. On Thursday, a concerned ABC 10News viewer whose family attends Skyline Church in La Mesa sent us this email: 472
