SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ten people were arrested in a suspected smuggling incident after border officials stopped a boat off the coast of Coronado this week.U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine agents say a boat was spotted just west of Coronado at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Agents said the vessel was traveling from Mexican waters into U.S. territory.A crew was sent out to stop the suspected smuggling boat and 10 people were found aboard. The boat had been traveling without lights on and was spray painted black, according to agents.The individuals on the boat, all male Mexican citizens ages 18 to 55, were taken back to shore and turned over to Border Patrol, CBP said."It’s dangerous to travel on a crowded boat, out at sea, with no lights, and these smugglers took the added step of spray-painting the hull black so they would be difficult to spot at night," said Christopher Hunter, Deputy Director of Marine Operations for CBP in San Diego. "Smuggling organizations aren’t considering anyone’s safety when these make these illegal attempts, only what profits they can try to make."The 10 men were due to be returned to Mexico, CBP said. 1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sweetwater Union High School District officials say their revised budget will not have a major impact on students, but some parents are getting notices from schools informing them of cuts to some afterschool programs, tutoring and summer school.The discovery of an accounting miscalculation over the summer led to a million budget shortfall that the district rushed to fix. On Oct. 8, the district’s board unanimously approved a revised and balanced 2018-19 budget. The San Diego County Office of Education has until Nov. 8 to approve it.Changes to the budget include furlough days for numerous district employees, elimination of paid training days for teachers and cuts to the adult education program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The County Board of Supervisors voted to temporarily ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco product in unincorporated areas of San Diego.Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Dianne Jacob, first proposed the ordinance in October in response to the nationwide epidemic of serious lung injuries linked to "electronic smoking devices, the alarming uptake in e-cigarette use by teens, and the terrible toll of combustible tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, little cigars) on San Diegans."There have been a reported 43 cases of vaping-related lung injuries in San Diego County. There haven't been any local deaths, but all patients have had to be hospitalized. Those affected range in age from 17 to 70 years old, according to the county.As stewards of public health, the County has a responsibility to act in the interest of the public health. The ordinances the Board passed today to restrict the sale and use of smoking and vaping products in unincorporated areas of the County will save lives," said Supervisor Fletcher after the ordinances passed. "These actions are a necessary and critical step to protect public health."RELATED: San Diego woman hospitalized with vaping illness warns othersThe ordinance prohibits the sale or distribution in unincorporated parts of the county of e-cigarette devices and flavored smoking products, including bubblegum, mango, creme brulee, vanilla, menthol and mint. “It’s critical that we do all we can now to address this nationwide crisis as health experts work overtime to find out what’s behind it,” said Chairwoman Jacob. “With lives hanging in the balance, doing nothing is not an option.”The board also passed a ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products and a ban on outdoor smoking at restaurants. The proposed policy aims to curb secondhand smoke exposure for restaurant patrons, as well as the service industry employees, by restricting smoking at outdoor areas in unincorporated parts of the county.San Diego is now among the several dozen counties across the state that have passed ordinances prohibiting or restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products.A second meeting on the ordinances will be held on Jan. 28. Despite ongoing challenges, residents at a senior living facility are finding ways to stay positive.You can’t see their smiles but you can tell they’re there.Residents at Belmont Village Senior Living in Sabre Springs are not only adapting to the pandemic, they’re overcoming it through "The Joys of Life."Don Bodow started the program to spread happiness and stimulate minds. Through a series of puzzles, games, and activities he helps fellow residents stay positive.“I’m making other people happy,” said Bodow. “Giving them joy simply makes me feel good.”Although they can’t be with their families during the pandemic, many are happy right where they are.“The joy of life is in all of us,” said Bodow. “We may not realize it and it needs to be brought out. You need to accept the fact that there are joys in your life.”One of his most active students is 98-year-old Pauline Hayes.“Some of those words are misspelled and you’re challenged to find them,” said Hayes. “I love doing Joys of Life.”Hayes attends every session and credits the class for keeping her sharp. When we asked her about the secret to life she replied, “keeping positive and keeping active.”Bodow says the program was built on his own experience after spending two months in a coma.“I lost all my memory, all my muscle mass. I had to learn how to walk again,” said Bodow.He’s made an incredible comeback while helping others along the way.“This is never about me,” said Bodow. “It’s making the other people happy, giving them a sense of a full life.”Through the challenges of COVID-19, Joys of Life is touching the lives of residents and staff like never before.Bodow has a collection of puzzles and games on his website.
