BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- On the eve of Spring Festival, people across China marked the last moments of the Year of the Rabbit with cheerful celebrations, while exchanging their wishes for a better and prosperous Year of the Dragon.Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, falls on Monday but the week-long holiday started Sunday, with families, urban and rural as well as rich and poor, dining together and watching the year out in cheer. In a new community in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan province, villagers relocated there for the nation's South-North Water Diversion project have their festival feasts paid for by the government."I've been buzzing around from office to office to get the festival allowances. Today is the third time money has been doled out before Spring Festival," said Lu Songtao, director of the resident committee of Jinyuan. The 60 households in Jinyuan are among the 330,000 people China has resettled for the central route of the massive water project, which aims to transport water from the Yangtze River to the country's drought-prone northern regions, including Beijing. Two month after bedding down in new homes with the help of government subsidies, villagers now wish their careers can also take off in the Year of the Dragon."There are many factories nearby, and I will start looking for a job right after the New Year, either in a battery plant or a food processing factory," said villager Liu Guizhi. In Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, sanitation workers who chose to stay on duty rather than be with their families during the festival ended up dining with the mayor."I'd like to thank you for a year's hard work that has kept the city beautiful," said Tang Liangzhi, mayor of Wuhan, at a banquet held on Saturday for 100 representatives of street cleaners.Though Spring Festival is an important family occasion for most Chinese, many cleaners could not leave their jobs as the week-long fireworks frenzy usually litters city streets with tonnes of cardboard and scraps of paper."I had been so busy today that I came to the banquet right from the street, with the my uniform on," said 51-year-old Yang Houjian."But I am deeply moved -- I feel my work is honored by the whole society," he said. This year's Spring Festival also brings a festive atmosphere to Xinjiang and Tibet, though celebrating the festival is not a tradition for many ethnic groups there. Young people, in particular, are mesmerized by the festival's "exotic" flavor."My friends from the Han community told me that it's their tradition to wear something red when their animal signs coincide with that of the year. So I bought a red bracelet as I'm a 'Dragon,'" said 23-year-old Hanati Kizihan, who is a Kazakh in Urumqi. Many households and institutions in Tibet have also put up national flags and portraits of Chinese leaders in honor of the national festival. On Sunday, a gigantic picture of China's central leaderships, represented by Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, was unveiled at the regional government building in Lhasa to celebrate the festival.

KATHMANDU, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- "One of the major problems of death due to breast cancer in Nepal is poverty and untimely diagnosis," said Dr. Abish Adhikari Oncologist at the Bir Hospital in Nepali capital Kathmandu in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Sunday.Adhikari said that the other reason why breast cancer leads to death of women is "women are not decision makers in their houses"."Many people who come here do not want to treat their wives or daughters because of the expenses as they are poor and it is really expensive here to treat cancer," Adhikari said.According to the Nepal Cancer Relief Society, of all cancer cases among the Nepali women and teenage girls as well, 60 percent is of breast cancer.Unverified rough data of the breast cancer patients in Nepal are above 50,000.Adhikari added that women are shy to talk about the problems of breast. They do not go to hospitals for the check up until they are bedridden and at the time they reach hospital they are mostly in the advanced stage. The major causes behind the breast cancer in Nepal are heredity, late pregnancy, consumption of alcohol and smoking. However, unawareness about it remains another major problem that leadind to death of many women in Nepal. Moreover, the rural women in Nepal are unaware about breast cancer, and if they are having some problem, they tend to hide it.Talking to Xinhua, Sajani Manandhar, General Secretary of Richa Bajimaya Memorial Foundation, a cancer awareness raising group said that the major cause of the preventable cancer in Nepal is unawareness. Also a nurse by profession, she said that no one bothers about mammography or regular checkup but are diagnosed at the very late stage. There are less than five hospitals that provide mammography service in the country.Roshani Chitrakar, 48 who is in advanced stage of cancer said that she did not told anyone while she found something unusual in her breast because it was not painful."I took it normally, but when I thought it might be a cancer and told my family and I was already in the advanced stage," she said. Her daughter, Roji Manandhar, said that the doctor has already told that she will not be living long. She is having difficulty even to eat currently.Another cancer patient, 67 years old farmer, Nakkali Nahakhusi said that she told her husband when she found her breast unusual. Her husband, former armyman, immediately took her to the hospital when she told about the problem. Now, she is already cured, and said with smilingly that the god of death did not want to take me away. She said that awareness should be raised because cancer is curable at the early stage.

SHIJIAZHUANG, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese archaeologists said Sunday that they have found evidence of the cultivation of glutinous millet in the northern province of Hebei that could date back to 10,000 years, the earliest evidence of people growing the crop in the world.Lab results showed that remains of glutinous millet found at archaeological sites in Cishan Village in the city of Wu'an were harvested during the Neolithic Era between 8,700 to 10,000 years ago, scientists with the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of China Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS) said at a cultural festival held in Wu'an on Sunday. This means Cishan was the birthplace of the crop, archaeologists said. They have also found remains of foxtail millet in the pits, which could date back to between 8,700 and 7,500 years. This would be the earliest evidence of the crop's cultivation, which means that Cishan was the birthplace of foxtail millet, too, said Lu Houyuan, an IGGCAS scientist.Cultivating small-seeded dry crops was more prevalent than cultivating rice in prehistoric times, especially in China's semi-arid northern regions, Lu said.A total of 50,000 kilograms of grains have been stored in 88 pits for thousands of years at the Cishan Site, a Neolithic site discovered in 1972.In addition to grain remnants, pottery, stone tools, animal bones and bone artifacts have also been excavated from the site, which archaeologists believe will help their research in the emergence of agriculture in China.
