Experts say a scammer cloning a phone number can happen to anyone and a Nebraska woman says her number is being used to try and solicit others.Caller ID "spoofing" is used to disguise someone's identity and is usually to trick a person into giving away personal information for criminal activity, or money. Now, many in Omaha are seeing local numbers including the same prefix show up on a call.Evy Akpan says recently she was receiving multiple calls a day from people who said she had called them several times when she hadn't called them at all."If I'm trying to live my life, and I'm getting phone calls throughout the day, and my phone is constantly ringing for a scam purpose, it's frustrating," Akpan said. "And also just receiving these voicemails of upset people chewing me a new one, and I'm like, 'I'm not calling you!' "The Better Business Bureau of Nebraska, SW Iowa, South Dakota, and Great Plains Kansas said scammers usually only clone a person's number for 24-48 hours then move on to new ones. The Federal Communications Commission says it's best not to pick up a call from an unknown number because if you do, criminals will know your number is active."Really, it's important not to trust the caller ID. The fact that it says it's coming from an area code that we're not familiar with doesn't really mean anything these days," said Jim Hegarty, CEO of the BBB Nebraska.The FCC adds that if your number's been spoofed, there's not much you can do other than change your voicemail to let people know of the situation. 1557

(KGTV) -- The County is investigating complaints from neighbors that a business owner with a criminal history for fraud may have converted a former hotel into a drug treatment center without proper permitting.Residents living near the former site of the Tuscany Village Resort on Circle R Way in unincorporated Escondido say they started noticing people wandering trough their neighborhood this summer."The people that are staying there have told us they're getting treatment," said one neighbor, who asked not to be identified.The property was acquired in March by NSI Services, LLC, according to public records. The company identifies itself as a "drug rehab" in its incorporating paperwork."Our concern is the safety and well-being of our community with a gentleman who seems to have disregard for the law," the resident said.NSI Services is owned by Larry Burns, an entrepreneur with several aliases who served prison time for mail and wire fraud and has been charged with crimes in at least three states.Burns, who also goes by Lawrence Burzynski, did not respond to phone calls by 10News seeking comment Monday or Tuesday.Burns was once the president of the Escondido-based Crosby Centers and is listed as a director of the Crosby Clinic on its website. Neighbors say they've seen a Crosby Clinic van parked at the resort.The clinic advertises drug rehab services along with treatments for traumatic brain injuries and CTE, and attracted media attention for treating former NFL players. In 2015, the NFL Players Association issued a warning to players about Burns, urging players using his services to "exercise extreme caution."Burzynski "has accumulated numerous convictions for felony FRAUD related violations," the bulletin read. "He has been convicted in federal prosecutions in Wyoming, Colorado, California and elsewhere."The old Tuscany Village Resort is not zoned for drug rehabilitation or medical services. After complaints by neighbors, code compliance inspectors began investigating the property on August 7, according to a letter from County Planning and Development Services Director Mark Wardlaw.The owner "indicated they had not yet finalized their plans for the property" but "noted that he may use the property as a resort that may also provide brain injury and other medical treatments," the letter stated. The owner, who was not identified in the letter, said he did not intend to offer drug or alcohol treatments at the facility."We will continue to keep our code compliance case open until we have received all the information required to classify the use," Wardlaw wrote.Staff gave the owner a 0 citation on September 12 for improperly storing items in the parking lot. When a 10News reporter visited the property Monday, there was still furniture and other items in the parking lot.The owner has until October 9 to clean up the property, said County spokeswoman Tammy Glenn."We will continue to update residents in the area and work with the property owner to ensure compliance with County codes," she said.Late Tuesday, a man who identified himself as one of Burns' employees contacted 10News, saying the hotel was undergoing renovations and would open next year as a Bavarian-style spa. The man named Jeff said other than himself, no other Crosby Clinic employees were working at the property and the resort would not be used for drug treatment."They think because they see a Crosby van it's going to be drug and alcohol [treatment], but that's not the case," he said. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) – A man is dead after police say he barricaded himself inside an Escondido Motel Tuesday afternoon. Police were called to the Hacienda Motel on the 700 block of North Broadway around 2 p.m. after a man didn’t check out of his room. Once they arrived and approached the room, officers say the man inside told them he had a gun and to back away. As they retreated, officers heard two shots fired. SWAT was then called to assist and, after the suspect was barricaded inside the room for several hours, authorities entered and found the man dead. According to police, the man is approximately 30-years-old, but his identity hasn’t yet been released. The motel was evacuated during the incident and nearby streets blocked off. 755

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt's 24-hour security in Washington extends to at least some of his personal trips, according to a letter Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse sent to the department's inspector general and shared with CNN.The letter, written based on information that Whitehouse says he confidentially obtained from an unnamed source, raises new questions about the cost of Pruitt's unprecedented EPA-funded security, and alleges that Pruitt has used his security detail while on non-official business, including trips home to Tulsa, Oklahoma, a family vacation to Disneyland and the Rose Bowl game.Whitehouse, D-Rhode Island, says the new details should be added to the inspector general's ongoing investigation into Pruitt's travel expenses and use of a 24/7 security detail. The documents, he wrote, raise concern "significant agency resources are being devoted to administrator Pruitt's 'round-the-clock security, even when he is traveling on non-official business."Whitehouse adds, "While I consider matters of personal security to be extremely serious, personal security should never be used as a pretext to obtain special treatment."The letter alleges that six weekly schedules and other explanatory documents that were provided to him show that Pruitt used between two and three dozen different agents during a six-week period.Asked about the letter, the EPA told CNN that "Administrator Pruitt follows the same security protocol whether he's in his personal or official capacity," but declined to further elaborate on those protocols.The EPA has said that Pruitt has faced unprecedented threats, including direct threats on his life, leading to equally unprecedented security measures.CNN reached out to the EPA's Office of Inspector General, which did not comment on the case.Pruitt has been under increased scrutiny for citing security as the reason he flew first class on the government's tab, racking up nearly 0,000 in travel costs. In addition to the family trips to Disneyland and the Rose Bowl game, the letter also alleges the security officials accompanied Pruitt on a trip to a December 29 University of Kentucky basketball game in Lexington.Whitehouse's letter also states that "more than one source" says Pruitt "frequently requested per diem lodging expenses in excess of the federal government's established daily rate."Pruitt's travel and security costs have gotten the attention of the EPA's inspector general and his fellow Republicans, including House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, who recently made Pruitt turn over all of his travel records for his first year.In a letter to Gowdy, Pruitt said his security team required him to be near the front of the plane for a quick exit in the case of an emergency. However, Pruitt did not turn over the waivers that are necessary to fly in an upgraded cabin.Whitehouse's letter asks the inspector general to see if Pruitt flies first class on non-official trips, and if so, whether the EPA pays for the security detail's flights, accommodations and per diems.Pruitt told CBS News recently: "There's a change coming" in the way he travels, "including flying coach," and in the way his staff will accommodate security threats.In October, CNN reported the EPA was beefing up Pruitt's 24/7 security, hiring a dozen more agents. At the time CNN calculated salaries alone for the full team would cost at least million per year, according to figures compiled from public documents.
