POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Crews extinguished a brush fire that sparked in a riverbed near Poway Tuesday afternoon. The brush fire sparked around 1 p.m. near Poway Road and Sabre Springs Parkway. According to Cal Fire, the wind-driven fire burned about one acre in an area with heavy fuel. Two helicopters were ordered to the scene to fight the blaze. At this time, the cause is unknown. Homes were in the path of the blaze, but were never threatened. In all, firefighters from Poway, San Diego, Cal Fire and Santee fought the blaze. 539

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - Poway homeowners say what once was a pristine golf course has now become an overgrown zoo. StoneRidge Country Club closed after voters defeated a previous development plan in 2017.Since the closure neighbors who live along the forlorn course say, little has been done to clear out brush and preserve the once lush golf course. "Absolutely nothing has been done on the course to maintain any sense of beauty. It's been a hazard with the bees, the snakes, the scorpions, gopher holes, you name it," said Rosalind Duddy, who's lived along the golf course since 1991. A crusader for her community, Duddy now goes on the course several times a month with a week whacker, clearing out dry brush. "Considering that we were here in '07 fires, and ultimately had to evacuate, 20-some homes were burned to the ground, brings back really, really incredible memories, and certainly I wouldn't want to have to have that experience again," said Duddy. The property is currently owned by Michael Schlesinger, who city officials say has completed the weed clearing around the perimeter of the property, consistent with the requirements for fire fuel management. This includes the clearing of weeds within 100 feet of structures. However, he has not yet completed the clearing around the clubhouse building.City officials say the weed abatement (wildfire defensible space) requirements are 100 feet from structures and 10 feet from roadways that are in the high fire hazard areas. Only the northeastern portion of the Stoneridge property is in the high fire hazard area. (KGTV) -- The Blue Sky Ecological Reserve will reopen Saturday after it temporarily closed when a four-year-old was attacked by a mountain lion, according to The California Department of Fish and Wildlife.The department received a call around 2:40 p.m. Friday about a child with scratches on his back and thigh.Park officials say a family was on a hike when the incident occurred. "The child was with a lot of family members which is a good thing and it sounds like the family separated into two groups and the child may have been darting back and forth," Fish and Wildlife Public Information Officer Tim Daly said that could have made him vulnerable to the attack.The City of Poway notified the department of fish and wildlife.He was taken to the hospital, Daly said, to collect evidence in hopes of finding the mountain lion who attacked him.Daly said more than 50% of California is mountain lion habitat, adding it's important not to leave out pet food and keep pets and children close while outdoors in mountain lion territory. 1053

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday the August wedding reception at the Big Moose Inn in Millinocket is linked to more than 175 confirmed cases of the virus. The agency says the outbreak continues to sicken people around the state and is linked to other cases at a county jail and a rehabilitation center. The outbreaks stemming from the event have spanned hundreds of miles in a state that had largely controlled the spread of coronavirus through the summer.
