HANGZHOU, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Fire engulfed an electric appliance store in east China's Zhejiang Province Friday night, local police said.Flames broke out at around 8:30 p.m. at a store of GOME, China's leading electric appliance franchiser, in downtown Jinhua City, Zhejiang, according to the police.The store occupies the first three floors of a 13-storey residential building. The store was in business when the fire broke out."The fire has engulfed six floors of the building so far. At least 10 people from the upper residential apartments have been transferred to safer places by firefighters as of 9:50 p.m.," said a witness.The witness said there were people trapped on the 12th floor of the building, but the exact number of the trapped remained unknown.Ambulances are waiting on the road. So far, no casualties were reported.Fire fighters continue rescuing people from the upper floors by stairs.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes the smooth completion of the referendum in south Sudan, which is "an important step" towards the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peaceful Agreement, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Tuesday. Addressing an open debate on the situation of Sudan in the Security Council, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN Wang Min said that the referendum in south Sudan is not an end in itself in implementing the CPA, instead, realizing sustainable peace, stability and development in Sudan is the final purpose. "No matter what the outcome of the referendum is, it is imperative to ensure the long-term peace and stability in Sudan and the region at large," said Wang. Wang noted that China hoped to see the north and south Sudan would continue to conduct dialogue and consultations, so as to reach an earlier agreement on such issues as the status of Abyei, wealth sharing and border demarcation, lying down a foundation for further promoting the north-south peace process. On Saturday, South Sudan referendum polling centers closed. The referendum will determine whether south Sudan remains a part of Sudan or becomes independent, in accordance with the 2005 CPA that ended a long-running north-south civil war. In order to assist Sudan in the referendum, China has donated to the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission 500,000 U.S. dollars in cash and provided its bureau with support in kind. China has also sent a group of observers to Sudan. Wang reiterated China's willingness to "work together with the international community and the parties concerned to continue to play an active and constructive role in promoting the long-term peace, stability and development of Sudan." Concerning the situation in Darfur region, Wang said that China supports a peaceful and comprehensive settlement to the Darfur issue, in particular the tackling of the root causes for the issue. "At present, the security situation in Darfur is very fragile, and humanitarian assistance is faced with many difficulties, " said Wang, "the root cause is the lack of a strong and widely supported political agreement in Darfur." China called on the Security Council and international community to strengthen support for political process in Darfur and urged the Darfur rebel groups to join the peace talks without conditions and delay, said Wang.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's gross domestic product (GDP) is predicted to grow by around 9.5 percent in 2011, 0.5 percentage points lower compared to the growth rate expected for this year, said a report issued Wednesday by the Bank of China (BOC).The report by the BOC, China's third largest lender, was based on the bank's projections of weak overseas demand, tighter monetary policy, and the government's planned economic restructuring for 2011, the first year of China's 12th five-year plan.The Chinese government announced in early December that it will switch its monetary policy stance from relatively loose to prudent next year to tackle rising inflation and keep economic growth at a sustainable pace.The report also said government policies this year to curb soaring property prices in some major cities, and the country's efforts to improve energy efficiency had slowed the economy with the GDP dropping to 9.6 percent in the third quarter, down from the second quarter's 10.3 percent and 11.9 percent in the first quarter.The report also forecast inflation to rise 4 percent in 2011, compared to the 3.3-percent rise expected for 2010. It said that in the second half of the year, the producer price index (PPI) for China's industrial products had kept rising along with the consumer price index (CPI), adding more inflationary pressure for the future.The Chinese government set a 3-percent target for inflation this year, but looks unachieveable after the index rose 3.2 percent during the first 11 months. China's disabled population exceeds 83 million. Li called for more efforts to care for the disabled in a bid to improve their quality of life.Further, the vice premier said the country would improve laws and regulations regarding the disabled and increase support of policies and fund input to serve the disabled population in better ways.Better services for disabled people would include improving the quality of public services, making more areas handicapped accessible, and assisting the needy and safeguarding their rights and interests in a bid to solving difficulties in their living, studying, and medical requirements, Li said.The expo, organized by the China Disabled Persons' Federation and the General Office of the National Aging Committee, brought together more than 200 manufacturers from 17 countries and regions, according to statistics released by the organizing committee.
