Ivanka Trump said Thursday the news of family separations at the border "was a low point" during her time in the White House."That was a low point for me as well," she said Thursday, speaking at an Axios Newsmakers conversation on workforce development at the Newseum. "I felt very strongly about that and I am very vehemently against family separation and the separation of parents and children so I would agree with that sentiment. Immigration is incredibly complex as a topic. Illegal immigration is incredibly complicated."Earlier this year, the Trump administration's immigration "zero-tolerance" policy resulted in the separation of thousands of children from their families. In June, Trump reversed course, signing an executive order to keep parents and kids together, but as of last week's deadline, 1 in 3 children still remained away from their parents, with no clear indication when they would be reunited.Ivanka Trump continued Thursday, "I am the daughter of an immigrant, my mother grew up in communist Czech Republic, but we are a country of laws. She came to this country legally and we have to be very careful about incentivizing behavior that puts children at risk of being trafficked, at risk of entering this country with coyotes or making an incredibly dangerous journey alone. These are not easy issues, these a

It’s a slogan meant to convey how delicious the food is, but KFC says they are pausing the use of “finger-licking good” in their marketing because it does not seem appropriate for 2020.“Think we can all agree, this year has been like no other and, right now, our slogan doesn’t feel quite right,” reads a light-hearted statement from the company.Maybe they are referring to the CDC urging Americans to wear masks and not touch their faces to stop the spread of the coronavirus.KFC’s marketing team also had some fun blurring the slogan from old billboards and commercials in a YouTube video posted Monday. The slogan has been used in connection with KFC’s chicken for 64 years.“We find ourselves in a unique situation—having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current environment. While we are pausing the use of It’s Finger Lickin’ Good, rest assured the food craved by so many people around the world isn’t changing one bit.” said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, global chief marketing officer at KFC.The company admits they are having a little fun with the slogan and the realities of 2020, and the slogan will be back in the future. 1148
It’s that time, when stores offer up their best deals on the hottest items. Some of the advertised deals can even cause customers to stand in lines for hours and even camp out the night before the items go on sale. But this could be a big waste of time.“Don’t buy something just because it’s on sale,” says Kevin Brasler, the executive editor of the consumer watch dog group Consumer’s Checkbook.Brasler tracked sales and deals at 19 major retailers for nearly a year to find out which companies are telling the truth when advertising their sales. "Most of these stores offering big ticket items are just offering the same deal they did before and the same deal they offered the next week,” says Brasler of his findings. “It wasn't a special price." The worst offenders range from big box stores to high-end retailers. And with Black Friday around the corner, Brasler warns consumers to be cautious of those doorbuster deals, especially those early morning sales urging you to get up to get amazing deals on hot items before they go. "There's for sure no reason to get excited about most of the items they are selling on Black Friday, because we found the sales they are offering then are just about the same as they otherwise are," he says. Then there are those buy one and get one half-off sales. Brasler says these, too, are often a sham. "These sales they just call them different sales; it's really rare that they have a super good price that you better grab right then and there otherwise it will go away forever,” Brasler says. That's because the less expensive item is usually the one that gets the half-off deal. So, in reality, you're really not saving that much at all. Also, beware of going out of business sales. "You're not offering them a special price; you're offering them the usual price," Brasler says. Sometimes, the third-party liquidator prices the items higher than the original price. That’s what happened with Toys-R-Us closed. "Even if it's illegal or not, it's sure dishonest," Brasler says. Out of the 19 stores Checkbook.org watched, they said Costco and Bed Bath and Beyond were among the most trustworthy, but that's mostly because they rarely have sales. 2271
In congratulating president-elect Joe Biden on Monday, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton publicly called for the Electoral College to be abolished and advocated for the presidential election to be decided by the popular vote."I believe we should abolish the Electoral College and select our president by the winner of the popular vote, same as every other office," Clinton tweeted Monday. "But while it still exists, I was proud to cast my vote in New York for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris."The Electoral College upheld Biden's victory over President Donald Trump on Tuesday, as he received the expected 306 electoral votes he won in the 2020 election. Clinton served as one of the 29 electors from the state of New York who cast their vote for Biden on Monday. 789
