The final tally was 52-48.Meanwhile, Democrats' repeated attempts to delay the process have proven futile. On Thursday, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee chose to boycott a vote that sent the vote to the Senate floor. And since Senate Republicans changed parliamentary rules to prevent the filibuster of Supreme Court nominees in 2017, Democrats have little recourse to further block Barrett's confirmation.The push to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg stands in stark contrast to 2016, when Republicans chose not to hold confirmation hearings for President Barack Obama's nominee to replace Justice Antonin Scalia for more than six months prior to a presidential election, saying that the American people should decide who fills the vacancy.Barrett's confirmation would give conservative judges a 6-3 voting edge on the court, which could significantly shape policies and precedents for a generation. 1626

Her team has tested more than 80,000 people in the New York area, and they’ve found the majority of people who had COVID-19 form moderate or high levels of antibodies.“Since March and April, almost everybody has maintained their level of antibodies. We do see a slight decrease, but overall, they've maintained their antibody levels,” said Wajnberg.But it's not entirely clear how long immunity does last and how good the protection against COVID-19 is.Wajnberg says we also don't have a lot of data on whether people who have antibodies could still possibly carry enough of the virus that they could spread it.The World Health Organization has advised against immunity passports. It says there's not enough evidence of immunity from antibodies alone.“I think given that we know that many or most people likely have some protection, this is not an unreasonable way to begin to open up society in a safer way than just throwing open the doors and hoping for the best,” said Wajnberg.Iceland's chief epidemiologist says he doesn't think it's fair to people who've had COVID-19, that they shouldn't be allowed to travel freely afterward.Critics of immunity passports warn they could potentially reward reckless people who become infected after ignoring COVID-19 rules or take away more of our medical privacy. 1755

When talking about veteran mental health, much of the conversation is centered on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). While both are widespread and debilitating, the mental health-related challenges veterans face go beyond these conditions.Dependable, courageous, and in peak physical shape, Theresa Larson chased perfection when joining the Marine Corps.“I wanted to be the exemplary Marine," said Larson. "To the T. What does a good Marine officer do? I had to do that.”A stellar student and Division 1 college athlete, she had been training for a challenge like this her entire life. With two older brothers in the military, Larson was well aware of the unique challenges she'd face as a female leader. “You have to be really fit and healthy. You have to be fitter than them. They're going to look at you physically and see how you perform," said Larson.Leader of a platoon, Larson was responsible for more than 50 Marines, working to earn their respect while training them for war. “You already fit in if you’re a male, if you’re a female, it's what is she going to do for me? Kind of attitude. And I was prepared for that," said Larson.But chasing perfection would come at a cost; her own well-being was no longer a priority. As the 12 to 15-hour days and mounting pressure felt out of her control, Larson latched onto what she could control. “The drug was food for me, so it ended up turning into the bulimia end of the first year," said Larson.With rigid fitness standards and weight requirements, the National Eating Disorders Association says service members are at especially high risk for eating disorders.“Abuse of fitness and nutrition tends to be the thing. It might not be full-blown bulimia or anorexia, or anything like that, but it can be a lot of disordered eating. Obviously, with yo-yo dieting, too much exercise or too little exercise can affect your focus," said Larson.Before deploying to Iraq, Larson sought help from a friend but didn’t disclose her illness to the military, fearing she’d lose her job.“I tried to make everyone realize I would be OK because I didn’t want to let the Marines down. You know, mission accomplishment and troop welfare are kind of the things we thrive on as Marines, especially Marine leaders," said Larson. No longer at a desk, leading operations and landmine missions, the responsibility to protect her platoon had never felt greater."It dawned on me, 'gosh, I’m really not OK. And this is not about me. It's about all the Marines I’m taking care of. So yeah, I’m sick, and I’m going to affect someone else.' It was a wake-up call," said Larson.Larson was sent home and said she had to fight to get treatment in the military. While grateful they covered 12 weeks of care in an outpatient rehabilitation clinic, Larson says she was on her own to continue getting help.“Anyone knows that has an addiction, it’s not just a, 'OK, you're done.' It's a continuous, daily decision and practice. And so, I ended up paying for my own care after that for a while," said Larson. "It was a couple of years until I stopped the symptoms of bulimia, and then was just dealing with what was left-- the depression, the anxiety, and managing that.”She says getting healthy became her job. And after the military, Larson helped others do the same. She wrote a memoir about her military experience and has since been contacted by countless service members and veterans struggling with similar challenges. “As a leader, there's a fine line of when you push yourself and when you need to ask for help. And asking for help, I’ve learned, is not a weakness. It’s a strength," said Larson.After earning a doctorate in physical therapy, Larson and her husband founded Movement Rx, a program helping people around the country uncover the root cause of their pain and injuries. “Just because someone is in a wheelchair, that’s not the only thing going on. Or if someone looks like they’re fine, it doesn’t mean they don’t have something going on," said Larson. In addition to free online resources for veterans, Movement Rx has free in-person training for veterans in San Diego. “We have our health care platform that veterans can use, offering mindfulness and meditation, nutrition support, fitness, as well as movement, working through injuries," said Larson. While there's more help now for struggling veterans and service members, Larson knows asking for it is still just as hard. “You asking for help, it's going to open more doors and more growth than you can ever imagine, but you have to take that vulnerable leap, and that's when life really happens." 4633

They were without a car seat and looked to be young," said Deputy Nguyen.The deputy issued the mother a warning for the traffic violation but noticed her children, ages 3 and 5, were not properly restrained in the backseat."Just through conversation, I realized she may have been through some financial difficulties, She mentioned car seats are quite expensive, which they are," said Nguyen.Nguyen has a 5-year-old son himself. 731

  

Whether it’s to earn rewards toward vacations or just finance everyday purchases, there’s strong demand for credit cards among older adults.According to a report from credit bureau Experian, baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) carried an average of 4.8 credit cards in the second quarter of 2019, more than any other generation in the report.One might think that an older adult’s chances of getting approved for a new credit card would be relatively high. It’s a demographic that’s had more time to establish long credit histories, pay mortgages and exhibit responsible borrowing. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act even bars creditors from discriminating against an application on the basis of age.If you fall into that demographic, though, there are several reasons why it could be challenging for you to get approved for a new credit card. Here’s what could be influencing your creditworthiness, and what you can do about it.Why older adults could be denied creditLess incomeDuring the credit card application process, you’ll be asked to report your annual income or income that you have reasonable access to; the bank needs to make sure you’re able to pay back what you charge.If you’re retired, you may be living on less since you no longer have that steady employment income, and that can affect your chances of approval.The good news is that you can count more income than just a traditional salary, including things like:Social Security benefits.Income from a spouse or partner.Income from investments and retirement.Part-time or seasonal jobs.Dividends and interest.Thin or ‘invisible’ credit filesIf you’re an older American who’s worked hard over many years to pay off your mortgage and whittle down daily expenses, you may not think your credit scores matter much anymore. But you may be rudely awakened when you incur a large unexpected expense, want to downsize to an apartment, or try to open a new travel rewards credit card to help boost a retirement trip. Credit scores do indeed still matter, and some factors may be working against you.In order to even have a FICO credit score, you need to have credit activity reported to the U.S. credit bureaus at least once every six months. Plus, that credit line with activity on it must be at least six months old.So if you’re fully free of debt — say, you’ve long ago paid off your home, your car and other loans and haven’t had any other credit activity in a year or more — the bureaus simply may not have enough information about you. Your credit file may be too thin.According to a 2019 analysis from credit bureau Equifax, about 91.5 million consumers in the United States either have no credit file or have insufficient information in their files to generate a traditional credit score.Poor ‘mix of credit’Even if you’re an older American who’s actively using credit cards and paying them off on time and in full each month, it doesn’t ensure you’ll get approved for your next card. In fact, if you have only credit card accounts in your credit file but no installment accounts like mortgages or car loans, it can be a drag on your credit scores.That’s because credit scoring models also like to see a “mix of credit,” meaning a variety of accounts that show you have experience with different kinds of borrowing. There are two basic types of credit:Revolving: Doesn’t have a set end date or consistent balance. Credit cards and home equity lines of credit are the most common types.Installment: Installment loans have set end dates and require a standard payment every month. Mortgages and car loans are the best examples.If you have a long credit history of on-time payments as well as low credit utilization, then not having a mix of credit likely won’t be enough to make or break your creditworthiness. But lacking a mix of credit could drag down a borderline score and make it hard to qualify for a new credit card.Co-signing pitfallsDid you agree to co-sign on a personal loan for your son, or on student loans for your granddaughter? Your generous help may have had unintended consequences for your credit scores.When you co-sign a loan, both the loan and payment history show up on your credit reports as well as the borrower’s. If the person you co-signed for misses payments, it’s your score that will be negatively affected.Even if the person you co-signed for is making all their payments on time, the loan could still count against you. That’s because it can constitute a debt obligation that leaves you too little disposable income to qualify for a credit line in the eyes of issuers.5 ways older adults can boost their odds of credit card approvalEven if you’ve paid off your mortgage, have a thin or invisible credit file or have never used credit cards at all, there are still ways to improve your chances of getting a new credit card.Check your credit report: Pull your credit report regularly to make sure there are no errors. A credit card issuer could have incorrectly reported a late payment, or your report could show accounts that don’t belong to you at all. If you find anything wrong, dispute the errors right away. Make sure you continue to monitor your credit regularly.Become an authorized user: If you have a loved one with a strong credit history, ask if they’ll consider adding you as an authorized user on their credit card. The issuer will send the primary account holder a card with your name on it, and you may benefit from their good credit. It may not be enough to have a huge impact on your credit scores, but it could give you a bump relatively quickly.Build credit with a secured credit card: A secured credit card acts like a regular credit card in many ways, with one key difference: It requires an upfront deposit, which acts as your credit limit and protects the card issuer in case you’re unable to pay back what you charge. Use a secured card to help build credit in the near-term, then upgrade to a traditional credit card once your credit scores are in better shape.Consider a credit-building installment loan: A credit-builder loan holds the amount you borrow in a bank account while you make the payments. You generally won’t be able to access the money until you’ve paid off the loan, but those payments are reported to at least one of the credit bureaus. Not only can that help your credit scores, but it can also add to your credit mix.Don’t close long-held accounts: If you have some credit history but are trying to improve it, avoid closing any cards that you’ve held for years. The length of your credit history and average age of accounts are factors in your credit scores.
