ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Nearly 5,000 runners woke up early Sunday morning to enjoy a run with a view of the ocean. Runners laced up for the second ever Encinitas half-marathon. The course took runners through Leucadia, Encinitas, Cardiff and Solana Beach. Seven and a half miles of running with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Nearly ,000 worth of prizes were up for grabs for the fastest runners. Proceeds from the half-marathon go to help local ocean conservation projects. The winner finished in an hour and seven minutes.  559

Federal investigators are looking into nine mail-in ballots that were reportedly discovered discarded from a county elections office in northeast Pennsylvania.The district attorney in Luzerne County reached out to federal authorities Monday, according to the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. The FBI and state police are investigating."At this point we can confirm that a small number of military ballots were discarded," U.S. Attorney David Freed's office said in a statement, adding that of the nine ballots, seven had been cast for Trump."Two of the discarded ballots had been resealed inside their appropriate envelopes by Luzerne elections staff prior to recovery by the FBI and the contents of those 2 ballots are unknown,” the statement continued.The investigation also found four “apparently official, bar-coded, absentee ballot envelopes that were empty” in an outside dumpster.Military ballots and other absentee ballots are supposed to be stored securely, unopened, until official counting begins on Election Day.The investigation, Freed says, found staff in Luzerne County opened nearly all envelopes “received in the elections office were opened as a matter of course. It was explained to investigators the envelopes used for official overseas, military, absentee and mail-in ballot requests are so similar, that the staff believed that adhering to the protocol of preserving envelopes unopened would cause them to miss such ballot requests.”Freed states this was a known issue from previous elections and the problem has not been corrected.Freed says the investigation into the small number of mail-in ballots remains active, and there are still questions about what exactly happened, he wanted to make it public at this point “based on the limited amount of time before the general election and the vital public importance of these issues.” 1885

One of the business owners who lost it all is now getting a lot of support from his local community. In a blink of an eye, Greg Cali's life work was destroyed."One thing's for sure, it's been the most stressful period of my life," Cali said. His gallery was called "The Cali Life." It featured works by Cali and several other local artists. The blaze on September 30, 2019, burned it all to the ground. All except for one thing."The sign up over the building was the only thing I got," Cali said.That sign now has a new home inside of Pandora's Pizza restaurant."Art and pizza. Those are two of my favorite things on earth," he laughed. Two days before the fire, Cali sent out invitations to his gallery's one-year anniversary party. But with no gallery and no salvageable artwork, it was going to be canceled. That was, until Craig Leslie, Pandora's Pizza owner, reached out. Some of Cali's artwork was already hanging inside Pandora's Pizza, so Leslie offered to host the gallery party at the restaurant, located just two blocks away. "We're here to support him," Leslie said. "We're here to support other artists in the community. Let us know what you need, and I mean, we have a lot of walls!"Cali spent the last three weeks printing his collection, getting new pieces and organizing a silent auction. Instead of drowning himself in sorrow, he said his community is showering him with hope. Leslie even told Cali that he could use his upstairs loft as his gallery until he gets back on his feet. "My future, it looks really bright," Cali said. "There are ups and downs for sure, but I am 100 percent sure that you can turn bad things into positives. (KGTV) — A Vietnam veteran who is struggling with memory issues says a "mistake" could cause him to be evicted from his Escondido apartment.Orrin Donohoe's studio apartment in the Adult Village complex isn't spacious, but it is home. For how long?"I'm scared of what's going to happen to me," said Donohoe.Donohoe, who served as a deckhand for three years on the USS Columbus CG-12 during the Vietnam War, was later diagnosed with PTSD. "Constantly stressed, afraid I'm going to forget something," said Donohoe.Problems with short-term memory steadily grew worse."Missing doctor's appointments, missed bills, forgetting to get gas, forgetting to check the mail. Goes on and on," said Donohoe.The memory issues that cost him so many jobs could now cost him his home. Donohoe depends on Section 8 housing vouchers to pay most of his rent. A few days ago, Donohoe got a letter from his landlord: A three-day notice to pay his overdue rent.Donohoe believes he forgot to fill out the paperwork for the annual renewal for his housing voucher."Scared and depressed," said Donohoe.He owes more than 0 for this month's rent."I don't have it. I have a 0 in the bank and I haven't paid my electric yet," said Donohoe. Donohoe thinks he could be evicted at any moment. He says the County Housing Authority told him he could reapply for a voucher in six months. Until then, he'll likely have to live on the streets."No sense of security ... ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The oldest tree at North County’s San Diego Botanic Garden is finding new life as a work of art.The Eucalyptus cladocalyx was planted 100 years ago at the Encinitas garden. It had to be euthanized last year because it was leaning and posing a threat to visitors, officials said.Artist Erwin Young “Mitch” Mitchell IV took the 30-foot stump and transformed it into a replica of a baobab tree. He expects to be finished this week."The Garden is a wonderful place, not only to visit, but to create such a great endeavor there is fantastic - I appreciate the opportunity," said Mitchell. "It is the first time I have ever changed a tree into another tree. I hope I do the Baobab justice." Mitchell recently completed the "Hodgee Monster" at Lake Hodges, also sculpted from a deceased Eucalyptus tree. See the artwork in progress at the San Diego Botanic Garden. 907
