It doesn’t take much to upend many Americans’ finances. A car that won’t start, a furnace that dies or a trip to the hospital can leave households struggling to make ends meet.According to the Federal Reserve, 44% of U.S. adults say they would have trouble coming up with 0 to cover an unexpected expense. Even families who have more in the bank can flounder. Surveys by The Pew Charitable Trusts found that 51% of families with at least ,000 in savings reported trouble paying the bills after a financial shock.Yet it is hardly a shock if an appliance wears out or a car breaks down. It’s time to rethink what we mean by unexpected expenses. Some bills may be unpredictable in their amount or their timing, but they’re still inevitable. In other words: If you have a car, or a home, or a body, sooner or later it’s going to cost you.A better approach, especially for households currently living paycheck to paycheck, is to save for the most likely costs and have some kind of Plan B to handle the truly unexpected. Here’s how that might work with three of the most common unexpected expenses Pew found: 1119

In the midst of a political battle over funding for the United States Postal Service, it appears the Department of Veterans Affairs has been looking into alternative delivery services.A veterans group called Disabled Vets of America posted a statement to their website explaining the situation, after they had approached the VA about concerns their members had shared.“The VA has now confirmed to us that the United States Postal Service (USPS), which is responsible for delivering about 90% of all VA mail order prescriptions, has indeed been delayed in delivering these critical medications by an average of almost 25% over the past year, with many locations experiencing much more significant delays,” the statement posted to the DAV’s website states. The VA acknowledged it was looking into delivery services outside the USPS in an email exchange with the DAV, according to CNN.“To help mitigate these postal delays, the VA has been forced to switch to alternative delivery services in a number of areas across the country and is taking other actions to expedite processing and delivery of prescriptions,” the statement from DAV reads. The VA has had an increase in demand for mail-order prescriptions during the coronavirus pandemic, they told CNN. Explaining that the VA has always used a “variety of prescription delivery methods to ensure timely delivery.”Spokesperson Christina Noel said they monitor prescription delivery times throughout the country. 1467

INDIANAPOLIS — Parents of two girls who attend Horizon Christian School on Indianapolis’ northeast side say their daughters are being bullied and threatened because of the color of their skin.Alexander Wortham realized something was happening when his daughter, Imani, started acting strange, asking to stay home from school more often than a typical teen girl.He and Dominique Duncan soon found out that their two high school daughters were being bullied.“Silence is killing our young people," Wortham said. "People not dealing with the issue. Not dealing with the problem and I think for us, as parents, enough is enough."Duncan agreed.“Very let down as a parent. Very let down,” Duncan said.Imani and her friend, LaShanti, say a male student started bullying them at school saying things like “If the school ever gets shot up, you’ll be the first one to get shot.”“He pointed to me personally, he looked me in the eye,” Imani said.“He said he would sell me into slavery if I didn’t do what he said and then he started making little jingles about slavery,” LaShanti said.According to an email the parents received from a school administrator, the school suspended the student last week after the girls’ parents brought the issue to the administration’s attention. But that student was allowed to return to class on Monday. The girls felt so uncomfortable, they both decided to stay home this week.“We should be able to go to school and not feel threatened, scared or having to be on edge the whole time,” Imani said. Both parents say they want the school to create more concrete policy changes on bullying. They both suggested an all-school assembly or bringing experts in to discuss race relations and bullying. The Horizon Christian School principal denied to comment on the situation, saying it’s against school policy to discuss students without permission from all parents involved.  1900

It's amazing how quickly technology can change. What seemed impossible just a few years ago is now reality. Robots are about to reach the next level, flexing their muscles like never before. It may not seem like much in this basement lab, but with a jolt of electricity, a team is creating the muscle of the future. "It's actually one of the closest analogs to natural muscle," says University of Colorado Boulder PhD student Shane Mitchell. "It almost performs like natural muscle."It's delicate enough to pick up a raspberry without bursting it, and an egg without breaking it. Yet strong enough to lift a gallon of water."We were inspired to create this artificial muscle from the world we live in," says Tim Morrissey, who manages the team at the Keplinger Research Group lab. The team develop HASEL, an artificial soft muscle that could enhance robot technology, making them better able to help people who need it."The robot needs to come into your home and work around you," Morrisey says. "And so if the robot is going to go up stairs it's going to need muscles to do that."HASEL muscle technology could also lead to advanced prosthetics.Morrisey says, "If you make a robot that has you know a skeleton frame with a soft bicep on it that moves up and down, you can do the same thing with a prosthetic."While other artificial muscles can be bulky, or unable to withstand electric pulses,  if there's an electric surge, HASEL can even repair itself. And with a rubber shell, electrodes and liquid inside, can you believe it costs only about 10 cents to make. "Originally we used canola oil actually just from the local grocery store," Mitchell says. It's an exciting innovation, but to this team, it's much more."We want to do something new in the scientific community," Mitchell says. "But it's really no help if it just stays in the lab. So we want to bring our technology to the community." Creating the next generation of robot technology, by adding a more natural touch. 2017
