The city likes to call it, 'Pure Water San Diego' which sounds delicious. And, for lack of a better word, it is a purified way to label the program. But some viewers don't like how we refer to it on occasion, and that's the topic of this weeks Let's Talk. 432
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While America's current border with Mexico has stood since 1848, the wall — or "barrier" — between the two countries is not as old.The divide has seen patchwork fencing over much of the area, largely leading to President Donald Trump calling for a new wall to be constructed.Here's how the current U.S.-Mexico border stands:THE CURRENT WALL...The current barrier between the U.S. and Mexico was settled in the Boundary Treaty of 1970. The treaty resolved any pending differences the countries had regarding the dividing line.This physical border stretches 654 miles from California into Texas, until hitting 1,300 miles of borderless separation. The full border, however, runs from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.Congress passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which called for a permanent wall to be constructed along the U.S.-Mexico border, along with technologic improvements in surveillance and security. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the San Diego Airport plans a Billion expansion to Terminal 1, concerns over how to get people to and from Lindbergh Field are creating problems for the project."We are the first and last impression people have of San Diego," says Dennis Probst, the Airport VP of Development. "We want to make it a good one."The airport served a record 22 million passengers in 2017. They expect that number to grow to 28 million by 2035. Getting all of those people to and from Lindbergh is a big part of the expansion.Plans put forward by the airport call for a new three lane roadway connecting Harbor Drive to Lindbergh. It would start near Laurel Street and take people directly to the new terminal and proposed parking garage."No stop lights, no stop signs, free-flowing," says Probst. "It's gonna take about 45,000 cars a day off Harbor Drive."But other San Diego agencies say the airport needs to think bigger and focus on different modes of transportation, instead of just cars."Connecting the airport to transit is something we've been talking about for a long, long time," says Rafael Castellanos, the Chair of the Port of San Diego. "If San Diego wants to be a world class city, we need to have world-class infrastructure."The Port owns the land that the airport sits on. They've proposed a light rail-style people mover that would connect trolley stations nearby to the terminal.Meanwhile, SANDAG and the County of San Diego released a study proposing a skyway with gondola rides that could run from the Convention Center to the Airport."I think the only obstacle is getting everyone to the table quickly," says Castellanos. "That's something that can be easily overcome."The airport says they're willing to look at all options, but they can't take a stand or incorporate any into their current plans because they can only control what happens on airport property."The view from the airport's side is that we're not the region's transit planning agency," says Probst.Funding is also an issue. The expansion project will only use FAA and airport-generated money. Because of that, FAA rules say they can only spend money to improve things at the airport or directly related to the airport. A tram or skyway that spans all of Harbor Drive would require an exception to that rule and would need money from other agencies as well.Probst says the airport has already started talking to the FAA about that option. They got a similar exception to help with infrastructure improvements when the airport built the rental car center a few years back.Right now, the airport is reviewing comments from their Environmental Impact Report. The next step is to put together environmental quality reports for the state and the federal government. Probst says the debate over transit is slowing down the process, to the point where he doesn't think they'll be able to start construction until after 2020. 2932
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Veterinarians with the San Diego Humane Society say too many pets are packing on extra pounds.The shelter sees overweight pets every day and recently received a 26-pound cat named Angelo; his family could no longer care for him. "Even though a lot of people may perceive him to be cute or funny, for us it's alarming to see an animal this size," said Dr. Danielle Clem, Hospital Director for the San Diego Campus.Overweight pets like Angelo are at risk for health complications like diabetes and severe arthritis."I really am a firm believer that good pet care starts with what you put in their food dish - and it's as simple as that," said Dr. Clem.Hospital staff put Angelo on a strict diet and began to encourage exercise. But Dr. Clem warns that if your pet needs to lose weight, it should be done under veterinarian supervision. "Cats losing weight too rapidly can actually be very dangerous."While Angelo has already been adopted, SDHS officials invite people to meet other cats during adopt-a-shelter-cat month. 1045
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The woman who survived her mother jumping from the Coronado Bridge while holding her got to meet someone who was there that day.Bertha Loaiza was just 3-years-old when her mother leapt from the 246-tall bridge on August 5, 1985.Her mother never came to after hitting the water.“It was the first body I ever saw,” said Fred Maupin who was on his parents’ sailboat near the bridge that day, “at 10-years-old, that sticks with you.”Maupin remembers watching responders pull two bodies out of the water and tried to put the memory in the back of his mind, but says it grew with time.“That’s how it become more tragic and scarring,” said Maupin, “remembering that someone could do that with her baby.”RELATED:?Woman survived her mother's bridge suicide as a toddlerMaupin saw a story about Loaiza on Facebook a few weeks ago and knew he had to meet her in person.Fred hit the road early from Arizona on Friday and the two met for the first time at Gloriettta Bay Park “I feel like I have to apologize,” said Loaiza, “cause he’s gone through it in a different way than I have.”The two hugged then talked for more than an hour — Bertha even got him a gift.“I feel better that he can see that I’m okay,” said Loaiza, “he can remember that instead of the bad stuff.”“Taking a memory that was so haunting and turning the page,” said Maupin, “it’s a better ending to the story than I had in my mind.” 1436
