ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai.The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain.The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters.The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight.The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 60-year-old man died after crashing his motorcycle in Fallbrook early Sunday morning, according to California Highway Patrol. CHP says the man was driving east on Mission Road when he began to weave before striking a curb and tumbling down an embankment just after 1 a.m. According to CHP, someone gave the man CPR, but he died at the scene. CHP says the San Diego County Medical Examiner will determine whether or not a medical condition played a role in the crash. 505

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) - A grateful family is speaking out after a Camp Pendleton Marine helped save their trapped baby as flames engulfed their car.Two Mondays ago, Tony Hurley, his wife and 1-year-old daughter were in their car on East Mission Road, on their way to a relative's home, around 5 p.m. Hurley says a gas can fell off a truck in front of him. Fire officials say it became wedged under the engine, leading to sparks as it dragged on the road."Almost like a firework going off ... As we pulled over, the car is already on fire. Flames were surrounding the perimeter of car," said Hurley.A frantic Hurley, along with his wife, got out and went to the back seat to get their daughter, but he says the latching mechanism for the car seat base was stuck."That's when I look up, and I'm face to face with a Marine on the other side of the car," said Hurley.That Marine was Gunnery Sergeant Kyle Wetter, who just happened to be driving by."At that point is when I used my pocketknife to cut the car seat belt that was holding the baby's seat int the car, so the dad could get the car seat out," said Wetter in a video interview released by the Marine Corps.As the family scrambled to safety, Wetter grabbed their belongings out of the car before also getting to safety. About a minute later, three different explosions rocked the car. After a few more minutes, flames had consumed the car."I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened if he hadn’t been on scene," said Hurley.Hurley says the Marine's efforts ended with the best Christmas gift ever: his family was alive and well."He's definitely a hero in my book, and I'm more than grateful," said Hurley."It's what I expect any person to do in that moment, is to help someone in need. I don't think I'm special by no means. ELIZABETH, Colo. — Police in Elizabeth, Colorado are investigating an unprovoked attack in the midst of an 8th-grade classroom at Elizabeth Middle School.Cell phone video posted on social media shows a male student walk over to another male student and repeatedly punch him.
