In a pandemic that relies heavily on the expertise and passion of our healthcare workers, we have seen many doctors and nurses working longer hours and even risking their own health to care for those in need.“This is a pandemic that's going to continue to go on. And a lot of health care providers in different settings have already been asked to work overtime shifts or extra shifts. And the thing is, that’s just increasing the burnout,” said Dr. Jessica Rainbow, RN and UArizona College of Nursing assistant professor.“Before the pandemic burnout was already a normalized issue in Nursing. And what I mean by that is that more nurses than not experienced burnout than those who have what I would call good well-being and don't suffer from burnout,” said Chloe Littzen, RN and UArizona College of Nursing Ph.D. candidate.Rainbow and Littzen are seeking ways to mitigate nurse burnout during the coronavirus pandemic. They say the pandemic has only intensified the problem.“They either leave the setting that they're in. Let's say they're in one unit, they go to another unit. They leave that facility going from, let's say, the hospital setting to the community setting or vice versa, or they leave nursing completely,” said Littzen.That puts the industry in a tough spot. The nursing shortage also affects the ability to educate future nurses and the ability to do more research.“It's important to say that this is not an issue that is the nurse's fault right or any healthcare provider or anyone who works in a healthcare setting,” said Rainbow.From their research, they say health care workers are shown to have good self-care, but it’s the systems of the work environment that can be stressful.“Where they're actually given the resources that they need to be successful. So resources as far as things like PPE, things like having adequate staffing,” said Rainbow.They say a big factor is also the public. Loved ones of those in care can help by being understanding and by adhering to guidelines, such as wearing a mask.“You know, it's important to give grace and struggling times and everyone's emotions are heightened and stressed and you know nurses are people, too. They're also a human being and they're also suffering with you,” said Littzen.They found nurses have done things like meditation, spending more time in nature, and seeking peer groups to voice shared experiences.“Social support is huge for nurses. I mean, especially to when you were a provider and you have a job where your significant other at home may not fully understand what you do. And so it's difficult sometimes if you don't have the social support of other co-workers in the same position,” said Rainbow.Rainbow’s study is called “Working in Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic. A personalized cancer vaccine is safe and may lengthen the lives of ovarian cancer patients, a small clinical trial found.The research, published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine, showed "significantly higher" overall survival at two years among patients who received the vaccine, compared with patients who did not.Ovarian cancer is a "silent killer" because often it goes unnoticed until it is diagnosed at a late stage. Treated with surgery followed by chemotherapy, most patients -- 85% -- relapse and ultimately develop resistance to the chemo. At this point, they run out of treatment options.Still, scientists are hopeful based on the fact that a subset of patients shows an immune response to their cancer. Hurricane warnings are up for some of the Louisiana gulf coast as Hurricane Delta is expected to cross the Gulf of Mexico and strike the state later this week.Hurricane Delta made landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula Wednesday morning and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) expects the storm to continue moving northward and bring "life-threatening" storm surge to the Gulf Coast late this week.According to the NHC, Delta made landfall near Puerto Morelos, Mexico with 110 mph winds, making it a strong Category 2 storm. The Yucatan Peninsula is home to many Mexican resort towns, including Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Belize, a coastal country on the southern part of the peninsula, may also feel effects from Delta.Hurricane Delta weakened to Category 1 status after it emerged off the Yucatan Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday afternoon. As of the 10 p.m. CT Wednesday advisory by the NHC, Delta had top winds of 90 mph.The storm is expected to regain major hurricane status on Thursday, but make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane on Friday somewhere along the Gulf Coast. A hurricane warning was issued late Wednesday for areas from the Texas/Louisiana border to Morgan City, Louisiana. While the center of Hurricane Delta is not expected to be as intense as when the storm had peak winds of 145 mph on Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center expects the storm to grow in size, spreading the impacts over a wide area of the coast. In advance of hurricane season, Florida Power and Light is reviewing plans to make sure power is restored quickly after a storm. This week the company is holding its annual storm drill, simulating a Category 3 hurricane. During the drill, the company says it is incorporating lessons learned from Hurricane Irma, which knocked out power to 6.7 million electrical customers, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).EIA reports the rate of electric service restoration following Hurricane Irma was faster than Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Five days after Irma’s landfall, the share of customers without power had fallen from a peak of 64 percent down to 18 percent -- a recovery rate of about 9 percent of customers per day.Power outages during Wilma declined from 36 percent of customers to 16 percent by the fifth day after landfall. This is an average recovery rate of about 4 percent of customers per day. FPL credits the improvement to money spent on infrastructure improvements. Since 2006, more than 860 main power lines were hardened; within the next five to seven years FPL wants to harden all of them.Strengthened power lines perform approximately 40 percent better than non-strengthened lines, FPL said.This year, FPL plans to undertake the following additional initiatives to improve the reliabilityof service: 1416
