SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A kindergartner walked out of his Santee school, crossed a busy four-lane road and made it to his home more than a mile away, his mother told 10News Thursday.The Cajon Park Elementary student had been placed in a 3rd grade classroom with his upperclassman buddy when his grandmother arrived to pick him up.According to the 5-year-old boy’s parents, the 3rd grade teacher told the boy to pack his things because he was going home and sent him to the office alone.The boy didn’t fully understand the instructions and walked past the office to his home, crossing busy Magnolia Ave.There is only one gate in and out of the school and the boy apparently passed through it undetected.School administrators noticed the boy was missing about half an hour later and told his grandmother, who panicked.The boy’s mother said she realized something was wrong when her doorbell camera sent an alert. She looked at the video and saw her son on the front porch with a woman approaching him.The woman turned out to be a school administrator who had been searching for the boy.Rob Cunningham has a kindergartner at the school and was concerned by the incident.“We trust the school to know where our child is when we drop them off and expect them to be here when we pick them up,” Cunningham said.Santee School District Superintendent Dr. Kristin Baranski responded to 10News’ request for comments, saying the boy was found safe within 15 minutes.She added the school has a practice of sending a buddy with younger children when they need to visit the school office but in this case, the guest teacher did not follow the practice.Administrators will put additional communication practices in place with guest teachers to make sure they are aware of the policy, Baranski said. 1789

SARASOTA COUNTY, Florida — Sheriff Tom Knight announced the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is seeking candidates to protect 12 of its elementary schools in the county.The sheriff is looking to hire 14 candidates to fill the newly designed School Resource Deputy II position.“It has been our goal from day one to identify a practical and cost-effective solution for the school district,” said Sheriff Knight. “After ample research and internal review, we put together a program that is not only compliant with the new law, but will stand to benefit the district and its students, while appealing to law enforcement-certified career seekers looking to give back to this community. The School Resource Deputy II Program is really a win-win for everyone.”According to the sheriff's office website, "the position will be responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school. The deputy will patrol the assigned areas of the school building, grounds, and parking lots to deter, detect, report and stop criminal activity. SAN ONOFRE (CNS) - Authorities Thursday were searching for a hit-and-run motorist who struck and killed a pedestrian on Interstate 5 in the far northern reaches of San Diego County.Dispatchers received a call shortly before 6:40 a.m. from a person who reported seeing a body off of southbound Interstate 5 just south of Cristianitos Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Smale said.Officers responded to the area and found a pedestrian lying near the highway, Smale said, adding that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.No details about the victim or the vehicle involved were immediately available.Officers shut down the onramp from Cristianitos Road to southbound I-5 and the right two lanes of southbound I-5 north of Basilone Road to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.Anyone with information regarding the crash was asked to call the Oceanside CHP office at (760) 643-4300. 921

Sears Holdings will close another 63 Kmart and Sears stores following the 2017 holiday shopping season.On Thursday, the company made the announcement to employees at the affected stores, which span 26 states.The closings affect 45 Kmart stores and 18 Sears stores. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A local portable toilet rental company is charged with tampering with equipment on its trucks to skirt emissions regulations. Employees also allegedly faked some of the smog test results.Team 10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner went to San Marcos’ Diamond Environmental Services on Friday afternoon, but was asked to leave. 10News was looking for answers to the alarming accusations that the company and some of its employees were committing crimes against the environment. Part of a video on the company’s website states, “Diamond's dedication to doing the right thing goes above and beyond.” Yet prosecutors say Diamond was preparing false smog test results to get passing results. Additionally, executives were allegedly tampering with emission control devices on its diesel truck fleet, re-programming the emission monitoring devices to avoid extra costs that come with burning off dirty, soot-filled diesel filters. Ed Rodriguez is the owner of Auto Park Smog in Escondido. He says, “If you’ve ever seen a vehicle going down the road, like a truck, and it has black smoke coming out of it, that’s all soot and that's not good.” Rodriguez says he's worked on Diamond's smaller trucks but not the ones that are part of this new six count federal indictment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims that Diamond took the devices out of trucks and shipped them out of California to be re-programmed. Owner and manager Arie Eric De Jong III, manager Warren Van Dam and technician Jorge Leyva Rodriguez are facing time behind bars and thousands of dollars in fines.The company declined an interview during our visit to the headquarters on Friday afternoon. 1692
