SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of fatally beating a fellow transient with a mini sledgehammer as the two argued along a Midway District street was ordered Monday to stand trial on a murder charge.Greg Repp Jennings, 53, is accused in the Jan. 8, 2018, slaying of 37- year-old Michael Anthony Dean, who was struck several times in the head with a four-pound hammer.First responders found Dean lying face-up in the street with his face "caved in," according to preliminary hearing testimony. He was pronounced dead at the scene, near 3805 Midway Drive.According to testimony from SDPD Detective Sgt. Christopher Leahy, one witness told investigators that an argument sparked the killing, which began when Jennings was talking loudly at a bus stop. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A rare thunderstorm Friday night is expected to quickly give way to conditions ripe for wildfire by late Sunday, forecasters said.A storm system arrived Friday evening and unleashed heavy rain and lighting on the San Diego area, with precipitation amounting to a few tenths of an inch in most places.The National Weather Service predicted scattered showers to persist through Saturday night. By Sunday night, Santa Ana winds of 25-35 mph -- with isolated gusts up to 70 mph possible in some areas -- were expected to move in.Humidity was expected to drop rapidly to 5-10 percent on Monday as well, prompting the NWS to issue a fire weather watch for San Diego County, as well as Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, from 3 a.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday.The watch was set to be in effect for mountains, foothills and valleys, but the conditions could cause fire to spark anywhere.Moisture from the thunderstorm will help to alleviate the fire threat, but fuels will dry quickly on Monday, NWS forecasters said.Winds were predicted to gradually decrease Tuesday night and Wednesday, and conditions will be warm and sunny the remainder of the week, forecasters said. 1199

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal authorities said today that a woman who fled federal custody and ran into a crowd of protesters was later taken to a hospital after she became distressed during the confrontation.The incident occurred Saturday in the 220 block of West C Street near the gate into the Western Region Detention Center. The woman's escape and the following confrontation between federal agents and protesters was captured on video and widely shared on social media, garnering over 15,000 views as of Monday.According to the San Diego office of the FBI, the woman -- who was arrested on suspicion of dealing methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl -- opened the rear passenger door of an unmarked car while handcuffed.She then allegedly ran into a nearby crowd that was protesting police brutality. Agents pursued the woman and regained custody, while the crowd of protesters surrounded the agents and the woman, the FBI reported.Protesters then confronted the two agents who pursued the woman, officials said. Video recording shows a crowd of around 50 protesters attempting to separate the woman from the FBI agents by pulling at her and the agents, until the woman becomes distressed and suffers a seizure.Protesters then encircled the woman and blocked the agents from her. A member of the protesting group designated as a medic then assists the woman, according to the video.The two agents, who wore civilian clothes, walked back to their car near the San Diego jail and called for medical assistance, the federal authorities reported.Paramedics responded to the scene along with a large police presence, which separated protesters from the woman. She was then taken to a local hospital, the FBI said.According to federal investigators, the woman's initial arrest was not related to the nearby protest. She had been arrested by the San DiegoCounty Sheriff's Department on suspicion of conspiracy to distribute meth, heroin and fentanyl to a 2019 federal gang and narcotics case. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego judge granted a preliminary injunction Friday sought by Hall of Fame horse trainer Jerry Hollendorfer against the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which banned Hollendorfer from participation in the wake of a spate of horse deaths.Hollendorfer, 73, was banned last month from Del Mar and sought legal intervention to allow him to participate at this summer's racing season.He argued that Del Mar officials did not provide an adequate reason for precluding him from racing. Frazier ruled that Del Mar "arbitrarily" denied Hollendofer's stall application without providing him a hearing on the matter.In court, Frazier noted that there was no definitive link tying Hollendorfer to the horses' deaths.Thirty horses died at Santa Anita during its most recent meet that started in late December and ended in late June. However, had avoiding negative publicity been the sole reason for the ban, Jaczko contended that would be a rational business justification on Del Mar's part, particularly with the heightened scrutiny the horse racing industry is currently facing."We're not saying he did anything to kill those horses. We're saying that in the best interest of our business, we don't want the attention, we don't want the clamor that we're not doing everything we can to change business as usual," Jaczko said.Jaczko also said the ban does not cause "irreparable harm" to Hollendorfer, as he has the ability to participate in other races, including several ongoing and upcoming races in California.Talking to reporters outside the courtroom, Hollendorfer said he was "very grateful" that Frazier ruled in his favor."I've lost an awful lot of business because of this," said Hollendorfer, who was not sure when he would begin participating in the Del Mar racing season.Hollendorfer said he had confidence in his training methods, but would be open to recommendations to improve horse safety."I would guess my stable does more with horses every day than any other stable that I know of," Hollendorfer said. I think that we're doing plenty to ensure the safety of our stable and if somebody else has another suggestion how to do more, than I'm certainly willing to listen to somebody's opinion on that."Hollendorfer's attorney, Drew Couto, said his record with equine fatalities was not as severe as Del Mar claimed, and laid blame to Stronach Group racetracks, identifying them as the common denominator in the deaths of horses under Hollendorfer's care."Where did (Hollendorfer) have equine fatalities? SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Friday publicly identified a 20-year-old man who was found dead of an apparent homicide in a car parked on a Southcrest- area roadside.Patrol officers responding to a report of a possible traffic accident in the 4000 block of Boston Avenue around 11:50 a.m. Wednesday found Ismail Abouabid mortally wounded behind the wheel of the parked vehicle, bleeding from the head, according to San Diego police.Abouabid, who had recently relocated to San Diego from Erie, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.
