In the wake of an increase of high-profile school shootings and seemingly round-the-clock news coverage of gun violence, some students are preparing for school in ways their parents never were: bulletproof backpacks.Companies that sell products that offer increased protection from gunfire say they have seen an uptick in sales. That includes Bulletsafe, a Troy, Mich.-based company that sells a panel that can be inserted into most backpacks for added protection.“I think its main use is for people to sleep better at night,” Tom Nardone of Bulletsafe said. “Honestly, I don’t believe they need one right now,” he said. “I think most the people who are buying them are buying them because a parent is afraid.”Nardone’s product is marketed as a notebook-sized bulletproof backpack panel capable of stopping all handgun rounds up to a .44 magnum.He’s the first to admit that the likelihood that your child is near your backpack at the exact moment a shooting happens is slim. Still, parents are buying them with hopes that it’s an added layer of protection in that worst-case scenario.“I’m a dad, too,” Nardone said. “I don’t want to live in a world where my kid needs a bulletproof backpack.”Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit test a backpack with the Bulletsafe backpack panel inside it, and true to its promotion, it stopped rounds from both a 9mm and a .45 magnum.When tested with a higher-powered rifle outside of the specs that the panel is graded to stop, the bullet unsurprisingly penetrated the panel.While the thought of a school shooting may seem unrealistic to some, the reality is that Michigan holds the unwanted distinction as the No. 1 school on the “State of Concern” report released this week by the Educator’s School Safety Network.The report described that during the 2017-2018 school year, more than half of all school-based threats and incidents of violence occurred in 10 states.Michigan tops the list because of a gigantic spike in school threats.The problem became more visible after the Parkland, Florida school shooting. Accoeding ot the Macomb County prosecutor's office, 60 juveniles and 12 young adults were charged with felonies in connection with school threat cases.“There is zero tolerance for that behavior,” Derek Miller, the chief of operations for the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said. “You’re dealing with school safety, faculty safety, these copy-cat threats and threats to children will never be tolerated by Eric Smith, or this office.”While the uptick in threats occurred following the Parkland shooting, experts note that Michigan was already trending up in the sheer number of threats before that shooting.Amanda Klinger, the director of operations for the Educator’s School Safety Network, says that more needs to be done.“Educators are really feeling the sting of this,” Klinger said. “This pull on their time, resources and interruption to instruction.”The data collected by ESSN showed that Michigan averages roughly 20 threats per 1 million students. A number of states average less than a dozen threats, some less than 5.While the data doesn’t explain why threats are increasing, it does shine a light on the discussion. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WRTV) -- A woman who comforted a college student during her last moments after being struck by a school bus Monday hopes her family knows everyone did all they could for her.Fatima Hassuneh, 18, was crossing the street at the intersection of University Boulevard and New York Street on the Indiana University, Purdue University of Indianapolis campus around 1:30 p.m. Monday when a bus attempting to make a left-hand turn struck her.School officials said the bus was under contract with Indianapolis Public Schools, but owned by Durham Transportation. Witnesses and college officials say Hassuneh had the right of way.PREVIOUS | IUPUI?student struck, killed by school busHassuneh was a pre-med student who aspired to become a doctor, according to a post by the college's Muslim Student Association. “Fatima, an aspiring doctor, was a sophomore in biology and was known for her kind heart and sense of humor,” the Muslim Student Association wrote. “She was a gift among us and has returned to her Lord. She was very active in our community and would often lead interfaith events. May Allah allow her to continue to reap the benefits of those deeds.”At the time of the crash, Alysa Schultz and her boyfriend were sitting at a red light at the very same intersection. She told WRTV that as soon as she saw what happened, her boyfriend started calling 911 while she rushed to check on Hassuneh.“As I was kind of kneeling there next to her, all she was doing was just holding her hand out, so I just grabbed it and held onto it,” Schultz said. “People were getting mad, saying, ‘Don’t touch her. Don’t move her.’ But at the same time, that one little bit of humanity – just hold on to her hand – that’s probably all she wanted.”Schultz said she didn’t know Hassuneh – but that her friends and classmates have messaged her since telling her what a wonderful person she was.“I had a lot of people message me on Facebook saying how awesome of a person she was and how beautiful and smart and driven and how involved she was,” Schultz said. “I really wish I would have known her.”Schultz, a former Indiana University student herself, said she hopes Hassuneh’s family can take some comfort from all of the efforts made to save her.“I hope that her family knows that there were six people calling the police, four people running around the corner to grab any police who were nearby,” Shultz said. “Everybody was stopping and blocking off the road so that no one could come near the situation. Everyone at IUPUI was like a family doing everything they possibly could for her, and I really hope that’s comforting to the family.”An Islamic funeral prayer, a janaza, was planned for Tuesday night for Hassuneh at the Alhuda Foundation in Fishers. INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) -- Police say two women climbed in the drive-thru window at an Indianapolis McDonald's and assaulted an employee because they didn't get their chicken McNuggets. Police were called to the restaurant just after 3 a.m. local time Friday morning.The manager told police he was working the drive-thru window when two women pulled up complaining they did not receive their chicken McNuggets. When the manager told the women they didn't order McNuggets or pay for them, even printing out a receipt to show them, the pair tried to order some at the window. The manager told the women they would have to drive back around and order at the signboard and said, "Have a nice day," before turning his back on them to fill other customer orders, according to police. The women then began pounding on the window and honking their car horn, claiming they had been disrespected. That doesn’t even include alcohol you may consume!"People kind of let themselves go, because they think it's okay,” says physical trainer Brian Brenzels. “Because they have an excuse to not workout and eat everything."  However, don’t stress too much. The average person only gains two pounds during the holidays, according to a study published in Psychology and Behavior.  But if that two pounds scare you, how can you avoid it?When tomorrow comes, and you're faced with an abundance of food, Brenzels says to grab the smallest plate.   “If you grab the bigger plate, you tend to fill it up completely,” he says. “You grab the smaller plate, you fill it up, that's still a quarter of the portions you would eat."  When it comes to leftovers, give it away.   "A lot of people are eating all the leftovers,” Brenzels says. “Send the leftovers home with people in small increments. Set yourself up for success."  And once Friday morning rolls around, make sure you get back at it.   "Still wake up, even if it's a walk, get up,” the trainer recommends. “Get moving, get that metabolism going. Get that workout in in the morning, and then its right back to normal."  Whatever you do, Brenzel says, don't wait till the New Year to make your resolution to get fit.  "Make your resolution right now,” he says. “Friday. It's the end of an era: Toys "R" Us is closing all its US stores.That's sad news for the employees, kids and nostalgic adults, but could provide bargain hunters the opportunity to snag a deal.The?news of the 735 store closures means shoppers can expect discounts as the retailer liquidates. A company spokesperson said Thursday the timeline of sales has yet to be determined.But Chuck Tatelbaum, a director with Tripp Scott, a Florida law firm, expects the discounts to happen pretty quickly."I think that the sales will run for up to 60 days, and the closures will have taken place by then," he said. "The rent obligation is just so high."Depending on the timeline, the sales could be modest at first. The biggest discounts will come later."They will start discounting more and more as time goes on," said Ray Wimer, assistant professor of retail practice Syracuse. "But it's a double-edged sword: The item you might want might not be there anymore, but the better deals come later in the process."He expects the discounts to start around 20-30%, but eventually climb to 75-80% off. Any purchases made during the store closing process are final sale, according to the company.While customers haven't been flocking to the retailer recently, Wimer said the closing news could spur more foot traffic."We will likely see an outpouring from folks remembering being at Toys "R" Us. I wouldn't be surprised if they get a lot of traffic all the sudden."Customers with gift cards or store credit need to act fast.
