There have been 530 confirmed and probable cases of lung injury related to e-cigarettes as of September 17, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. That's 150 more than had been reported on September 11. There have been cases in 38 states and one US territory.Among the cases for which the CDC has received information about patients' sex and age, 72% are in men, 67% are in people ages 18 to 34, 16% are in people younger than 18 and 17% are in people age 35 and older. More than half of the cases are in people younger than 25.Vaping-related illnesses have been linked to seven deaths, two in California and one each in Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Oregon.Health officials said the investigation is complex, involving hundreds of patients -- some who are reluctant or too ill to talk with investigators -- and multiple substances."I wish we had more answers," Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC, said during a media briefing.Health officials haven't found a definitive cause or a clear connection between cases. The CDC and various state health departments have reported widespread use of products containing THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive substance within cannabis. But health officials emphasized Thursday that not all people who became ill had used THC, and many had used multiple substances.Mitch Zeller, director of the US Food and Drug Administration's Center for Tobacco Products, said the agency has activated its law enforcement arm, the Office of Criminal Investigations, to identify what is making people sick and how it's supplied. Zeller said the investigation is ongoing, but the office is not pursuing any prosecutions related to personal use of e-cigarette products.Zeller also FDA has collected more than 150 vaping product samples for analysis in its forensic chemistry center and the number continues to grow. 1916

The second suspect in a harrowing Ohio child abuse case was arrested near Cincinnati Thursday night, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters said. Charles Breeze, 61, and wife Margaret Breeze, 47, both stand accused of starving and abusing an 11-year-old girl so severely her life was in danger by the time authorities intervened. The Breezes kept the girl locked in her bedroom in a trailer and fed her rice once a day, according to court documents. She weighed 47 pounds, was experiencing liver failure and could have died if she had not been discovered by a Child Protective Services worker. The girl was placed in the custody of the couple six years ago in Bracken County, Kentucky. According to the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children, the Brown County Jobs and Family Services should have been notified of the family's move from Kentucky to Ohio so the agency could make sure the girl was being properly cared for. Mitch Sharp, the director of the Brown County JFS, said the agency was never informed of the girl's status as an adoptee or her location.A video found in the Breezes' home shows Margaret Breeze telling the girl she would like to “break her jaw so she didn't have to listen to her,” court documents say. Another video shows the child being beaten and threatened. The Breezes, who had custody of the girl, monitored her through a surveillance camera and made her wear diapers because the trailer did not have bathrooms, according to county prosecutor Zachary Corbin. Police arrested Margaret Breeze on Nov. 1. Her husband would remain at large until Thursday.A teacher's tip led authorities to the girl, Corbin said. The girl was home schooled and was taking a test online when she complained to the teacher that she was hungry. The teacher "was observant enough to pick up on little things that this little girl was saying, talking about the stomach ache, being hungry,” Corbin said. “She made the report and probably saved a life.” On Sept. 13, a Child Protective Services worker responded to the Breezes' property on White Oak Valley Road and found it in disarray, according to court documents. The worker found the girl to be in desperate need of medical treatment, and authorities removed her a few days later. The child was admitted to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and diagnosed with 2349

TV stations are frequently criticized for opting to break into regular programming in lieu of severe weather coverage. On Sunday, the NBC affiliate in Dallas opted to not break into a Cowboys game instead of interrupting the game to notify viewers of a possible tornado. It turns out that an EF-3 tornado was on the ground in Dallas, and some who were watching the football game were unaware of the twister. It took six minutes for the station to interrupt coverage of the game. Following the tornado, the station issued an apology:"During Sunday night's Dallas Cowboys game, we made a mistake by not immediately interrupting the football game with a Tornado Warning."Although our meteorologists were tracking thunderstorms across the area when the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Dallas County, we delayed breaking into programming for six minutes."Our meteorologists were also streaming live weather coverage throughout the evening on our site, NBCDFW.com. We also alerted the football audience to our weather livestream throughout the game."When it comes to dealing with severe weather, we know that seconds matter. We should have broken into football programming sooner. We apologize and want you to know that we’re doing everything in our power to make sure this does not happen again."We look forward to regaining the trust of anyone we may have disappointed."According to FCC rules, broadcasters must inform the public with both visual and audio format of emergencies, which include tornadoes. Although an on-screen graphic and an emergency alert tone satisfies this requirement, many stations opt to fulfill their requirement by breaking into regular programming. In April, Alabama meteorologist James Spann stated many residents are unable to locate their town on a map, making a graphic with no commentary useless. Spann says this is concerning during incidents of life-threatening weather.Spann expressed his frustration while on air on WMBA-TV in Birmingham. "During severe weather, what do we use? Maps," Spann explained on the air. "We have learned a large percentage of people in our state and in many states cannot find themselves on a map."If I were to give you a blank map with no labels, no highways, just county lines and state lines, could you draw a dot within 50 miles of your house? We've seen some studies which show about 85 percent of the population cannot."In May, Jamie Simpson, then a meteorologist in Dayton, Ohio, called out viewers on air for social media

Tuesday marks the biggest day in the nominating race for Democratic hopefuls in this year’s presidential election. Nearly one-third of all pledged delegates will be up for grabs in Tuesday’s race. In total, 14 states and American Samoa will help decide who the Democratic nominee will be. Who votes?Voters in the following states, and one territory, can cast ballots on Tuesday:Alabama (52 delegates)American Samoa (6 delegates)Arkansas (31 delegates)California (415 delegates)Colorado (67 delegates)Maine (24 delegates)Massachusetts (91 delegates)Minnesota (75 delegates)North Carolina (110 delegates)Oklahoma (37 delegates)Tennessee (64 delegates)Texas (228 delegates)Utah (29 delegates)Vermont (16 delegates)Virginia (99 delegates)Remaining candidates:Sen. Bernie Sanders (60 delegates)Vice President Joe Biden (54 delegates)Sen. Elizabeth Warren (8 delegates)Mayor Mike Bloomberg (0 delegates)Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (0 delegates)Who left the race?Since Biden won in dominating fashion on Saturday, businessman Tom Steyer, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Mayor Pete Buttigieg have all withdrawn from the race. Klobuchar and Buttigieg both endorsed Biden on Monday. Who’s the frontrunner?Going into last Saturday’s race in South Carolina, many considered Sanders the frontrunner to win the nomination. His frontrunner status has been brought into question thanks to the events of the last three days. Biden’s surge in South Carolina, plus the sudden withdrawal of several other candidates, could give Biden a boost to what was a slumping campaign. Biden’s campaign has struggled to raise money to have the sort of advertising that Bloomberg and Sanders have. But with several major endorsements, Biden has seen his share of free advertising through news reports and buzz around the campaign. Bloomberg’s entrySuper Tuesday marks the first time Bloomberg will be competing for votes. He has spent some of his fortune to put his message before voters. For instance, on Sunday during primetime, he took out advertising on several major networks to talk about the coronavirus. He also purchased ad time during the Super Bowl. But Bloomberg also did not see much of a boost coming out of two debates, his first of which involved attacks from Warren about his handling of non-disclosure agreements with his employees. What polling saysRecent polls have Sanders ahead nationally, and in leading in many Super Tuesday states including Texas and California. A caveat though is those polls were conducted before Saturday, and how Buttigieg, Klobuchar and Steyer voters sway could determine who wins the majority of delegates on Super Tuesday. How it could play outSuper Tuesday could give some clarity as to whether the race will be decided during the primary season, or at the Democratic National Convention in July. A candidate is required to win 1991 pledged delegates going into the convention. Failure to win a majority of delegates will result in hundreds of so-called “Super Delegates” to cast a ballot during a second round of voting. How likely of a scenario is a brokered convention? Election forecast site 538 gives the odds of a brokered convention at 2 out of 3. But the site also gives both Sanders and Biden a one in six chance to win the nomination outright. Why 15% matters? In order to gain delegates from a state, earning 15% of the vote is the minimum threshold. Among the candidates in each state who win 15% of the vote, the number of delegates is allocated proportionally based on their performance throughout the entire state and within the state’s congressional districts. 3588
