But the biggest change came when Walmart started offering lower prices on diapers, according to toy industry analyst Jim Silver.While Toys "R" Us remained a destination during the holidays, it lost regular shoppers during the rest of the year."That changed everything," Silver said.In 2001, Toys "R" Us opened a flagship store in Times Square, complete with a 60-foot Ferris wheel and a life-size Barbie dollhouse, in order to juice enthusiasm. But the costs were "astronomical," Silver said.On shaky ground, Toys "R" Us was taken private by a group of private equity firms in 2005. Bain Capital, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Vornado Realty Trust bought the company for .6 billion.Saddled with debt, the store was not able to pour enough money into necessary, innovative changes. By the time Amazon ruled the online shopping ecosystem, Toys "R" Us was lightyears behind — despite an early partnership with Amazon in 2000. The agreement to jointly sell toys online ultimately went sour and ended after a court fight."Walmart had a better online experience. Target had a better online experience," Silver said. "They lost online and they didn't adapt."In 2015, Toys "R" Us closed its Times Square mega-store. It was the beginning of the end.A dismal 2017 holiday season was the death knell. The shattered window partially sucked a woman out of the plane as passengers struggled to pull her back in."Everybody was going crazy, and yelling and screaming," Martinez said. "We made every effort that we could possibly make to save this woman's life."Martinez said it was a rough landing, and he wasn't sure if the plane was going to crash. The jet could have been landing on a freeway or a skyscraper for all he knew, he said."I didn't know if we were going to be running into a building. I didn't know what state the plane or even the pilot was in, if we were in condition to land," he said. Southwest 1380, it doesn't matter we will work it out there," the air traffic controller said.The air traffic controller asked other planes to prepare for the airport to be shut down.The investigationThe National Transportation Safety Board said a preliminary look at the engine shows one of its 24 fan blades was missing.A first look showed evidence of metal fatigue where the blade attached to a hub, according to Chairman Robert Sumwalt of NTSB.The crew reported damage to one of the aircraft's engines as well as the fuselage and a window, the Federal Aviation Administration said.Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said the plane was inspected Sunday, but he had no details on what parts were examined. "I'm not aware of any issues with the airplane or any issues with the engine involved," he said."This is a sad day and our hearts go out to the family and the loved ones of the deceased customer," he said. "We will do all that we can to support them during this very difficult time."The woman killed was identified as Jennifer Riordan, 43, according to CNN affiliate KOAT. It said she worked for Wells Fargo in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Southwest said it's the first in-flight death in company history.Flight recorders found The flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder have been sent to Washington, Sumwalt said. Four sisters from Nebraska were ecstatic when they found out they were all pregnant at the exact same time.Elizabeth, Danielle, Michelle, and Sarah delivered not four but five babies, all in the course of 12 days.Elizabeth Kohlhoff delivered twins on April 29."Danielle was the first," Elizabeth said. "And then Sarah and Michelle and I were like thank goodness it's not me! And then all of a sudden I'm like oh wow, me now."Elizabeth, Danielle, Michelle, and Sarah carried their babies during the pandemic. Grandma Mary was excited but worried about her daughters."It was scary," Mary Sneed, the grandmother, said. "It was all scary but you know pregnancy's scary. Having a baby is scary. So praise god everybody's healthy. It was perfect."Everything went well, and they delivered five babies. Twins Henry and Emma, Alivia, Josephine, and Natalie. The deliveries all taking place within 12 days."It was not planned at all. It was crazy," Elizabeth said.To grandma Mary - five is just a good starting point. She herself had 12 kids."It's just a lot of fun having kids, everybody has lots of kids, a lot of fun."They call it the miracle during the pandemic. Especially because Michelle Ismert lost her first baby during pregnancy.Michelle gave birth to Josephine on May 1"We lost our first at 37 weeks," Michelle said. "So it was a little scary at the end thinking that may happen again. Four San Diego lawmakers are proposing a more than billion solution to stop sewage from Mexico from contaminating South County beaches.The four members of congress, all Democrats, announced the plans at a news conference Monday. Their legislative acts would free up funds to pay for cross border infrastructure projects that would keep sewage from flowing up from the Tijuana River and the Punta Bandera treatment plant. The flow goes into the waters off Imperial Beach and Coronado, and has led to numerous closures. "We have an emergency along the border. It is sewage," said Rep. Juan Vargas, whose 51st district includes Imperial Beach. "Let's quit talking about other things. it's sewage right here, let's do something. We need money, we have the projects. Let's get going." Vargas, joined by Reps. Scott Peters, Susan Davis and Mike Levin, said the will to fix these problems comes down to funding. A bill introduced by Vargas and Peters would increase the North American Development Bank's capital by .5 billion to finance infrastructure projects. Additionally, Levin has introduced legislation to authorize 0 million a year for five years through the Border Water Infrastructure Fund. Mexico would be expected to contribute to the projects financially, but there would be exemptions for financial or national security reasons. Meanwhile, Davis introduced a resolution that encourages the Department of the Navy to take a leading role in the mitigation of cross-border spills that impact national security. A spokesman for Rep. Duncan Hunter, the county's lone Republican member of Congress, said Hunter was reviewing the legislation and would support it if he can. 1689
