The State of Washington will soon have to rehab a lake that is overrun with an invasive species: Goldfish.The fish have filled West Medical Lake, along with Koi, and are crowding out other fish species.Pet owners likely dumped goldfish into the lake, and that may be the source of the problem, says the Division of Fish and Wildlife. Officials say while some believe it's a service to goldfish to release them into a lake, it is a disservice to the ecosystem.Goldfish are a domesticated version of a wild carp from East Asia and were developed due to artificial selection created by humans.Simply put, goldfish are mostly for visual effect.West Medical Lake, near Spokane, Washington, is known as one of the best producing opening day trout lakes in the state, according to the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. It gets stocked with thousands of native trout every year, but that trout is unable to flourish because of the goldfish, which is taking resources such as food and oxygen away. 1016

The University of Cincinnati's Board of Trustees voted Tuesday morning to remove Marge Schott's name from the university's baseball stadium and another space in the school's archive library immediately."Marge Schott’s record of racism and bigotry stands at stark odds with our University’s core commitment to dignity, equity, and inclusion," UC president Neville Pinto said. "I hope this action serves as an enduring reminder that we cannot remain silent or indifferent when it comes to prejudice, hate, or inequity. That all it did was coming together, unity, and somebody asking for change."Ramey said Tuesday's vote wasn't a celebration per se, but it has brought awareness quickly and is an indicator of the direction of the country."As an athlete for me personally as an athlete going through UC it was conflicting to play under that name," Ramey said. "It was. I'm going to put my all out and my teammates are going to put their all-out - we're brothers - but at the end of the day that's a conflicting situation to be put in as a black athlete at the university. I don't want that to happen for anybody else coming into the next generation."The Marge and Charles Schott Foundation previously made a statement about the petition."We can ask you to learn from Mrs. Schott's mistakes as well as her great love for Cincinnati," a statement from the Schott Foundation reads. "We fully support the decisions made by the organizations that have received grants from the Foundation."St. Ursula Academy decided previously to remove Schott's name from two of their campus facilities: a stadium and a school building.There was no immediate word from UC when the exterior letters of the stadium name will be removed. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday that there are 155 patients under investigation this year for acute flaccid myelitis, a condition that that can cause paralysis and mostly affects children.Of these, 62 have been confirmed by the CDC in 22 states, and the remainder continue to be investigated.Acute flaccid myelitis, also called AFM, is a rare but serious condition that affects the nervous system -- specifically, the area of the spinal cord called gray matter. It affects fewer than one in a million people each year across the country, the CDC estimates.The number of patients under investigation is up from 127 patients a week ago, though no new confirmed cases have been reported.The average age of patients confirmed to have the condition is just 4 years old, and more than 90 percent of cases overall occur in children 18 and younger, according to Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the agency's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. 1003

The sister of Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof was arrested Wednesday on charges of bringing weapons and drugs to her South Carolina high school, authorities said.Morgan Roof, 18, was arrested after a school resource officer at the A.C. Some of the speakers referenced how the coronavirus pandemic has provided an experiment for virtual learning.“But the virtual learning is not like being in a classroom, and we’ve learned that, I think, very strongly — in almost all cases. People thought for a long time that would be the answer but it’s — that’s not the answer. The answer is an old-fashioned one,” President Trump said.The recommendations encourage the use of masks and social distancing, as well as educating students, teachers and staff about Covid-19 symptoms.
