SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California is the worst state for military retirees when it comes to the cost of housing, according to WalletHub. Overall, California ranked 21st on the list of best and worst states for military retirees. The Golden State ranked 9th for quality of life, 3rd for number of VA health facilities per number of veterans and 5th for number of VA benefits-administration facilities per number of veterans. Dragging California down to the 21st spot however, is the cost of living. The state ranked 51st for housing affordability and 49th for percent of veteran-owned businesses. California also ranked 48th for its percentage of homeless veterans and 12th for veteran job opportunities. The report also found that red states are friendlier to military retirees than blue states. 802

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction began Friday on SeaWorld's next big attraction for the park, billed as California's tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster.The first phase on the dive coaster started in conjunction with National Roller Coaster Day, as crews prepared the coaster site for the ride's foundation and utilities. The coaster will be located adjacent to the park's Journey to Atlantis attraction in the southeast corner of the park.SeaWorld previously said the ride would be called "Mako," after the endangered species of shark. At the crown of the attraction, riders will be suspended on a 45-degree angle before diving 143 feet at more than 60 miles per hour. For two minutes, riders will zip through inversions, a barrel roll and Immelmann loop, hammerhead turn, and flat spin along 2,500 feet of track. Each car will hold 18 riders in three, six-person rows.Aquatic education will play a role in the attraction as well. SeaWorld plans to partner with a conservation group to focus on the ride's conservation efforts.Switzerland-based Bolliger & Mabillard, which built SeaWorld Orlando's Kraken and Mako rides, will construction the San Diego coaster.SeaWorld plans to open the coaster to the public in 2020. 1476

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- County health officials are notifying people who may have been exposed to tuberculosis at locations throughout San Diego County. According to County News Center, three unrelated cases of the disease were reported in San Diego County between August 20 and October 18. Two of the cases were reported at San Diego County Sheriff’s detention facilities. RELATED: Tuberculosis case confirmed at San Diego Airport, exposure risk extremely lowThe third case was found in a person who arrived from out of town after being diagnosed with TB and spent time at one of the city’s bridge shelters. Investigators believe the individual arrived in San Diego after leaving a Long Beach hospital without permission. The third person died from “co-occurring medical conditions” at a local hospital on October 6. The periods of exposure are listed below: Aug. 20 to Sept. 6, 2019 at the San Diego Central Jail Detention FacilitySept. 6 to Sept. 15, 2019 at the George Bailey Detention FacilityOct. 16 to Oct. 18, 2019 at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry FacilityAug. 20, 2019 to Sept. 9, 2019 at the 16th St. and Newton Ave. bridge shelterThe sheriff’s department is offering free testing for its staff and all identified people in custody while the County Health and Human Services Agency is offering free tests to those who may have been exposed and have no medical provider. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City Council members Friday announced a plan to push for a temporary shelter for the homeless in Murphy Canyon.Council members Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez will hold a news conference Monday to request that a shelter be built at the former Chargers training facility.The complex, owned by the city, has remained unused since the Chargers moved to Los Angeles and will likely remain vacant for several more years.Announcing the press conference, the councilmembers said, “The San Diego River has seen an explosion of homeless encampments this year. This is an environmental nightmare and extremely dangerous with the rainy season rapidly approaching.”More than 100 homeless encampments were counted by volunteers with the San Diego River Park Foundation in October. 792

Brothers Zach and Asher Swazey are putting together their own newscasts.Its called “SGN San Diego.” The newscast is filled with good news.“You want to have something that will affect people in a positive way,” says 13-year-old Zach.The brothers are now working on episode two. They say it was a lot of work putting everything together.“It took us 2-3 weeks,” says ten-year-old Asher. “We went through multiple stages of editing. It took a little of time to make the script and film.”The boys say they were inspired to start SGN San Diego after watching actor and filmmaker John Krasinski on Youtube.The boys say their video is getting more views, but their headline is to make people feel good.“When you’re making a YouTube channel, it’s not about how many likes you get or how many subscribers, it’s how it affects people.”The brothers say their parents are also a big help.
