BEIJING, April 27 -- The yuan will remain stable against the U.S. dollar as China will take a cautious and stable position in its foreign exchange investment.     The Chinese currency gained against the US dollar in the past week and ended at 6.8273 last Friday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System. The yuan closed at 6.8311 by the end of the previous week.     China will continue its policy of diversifying its huge amount of foreign exchange reserves, the currency regulator said last Friday.     Hu Xiaolian, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, told Xinhua news agency that it will stick to major currencies and high-quality assets in its foreign exchange investments.     China's overseas earnings hit 82.5 billion U.S. dollars in the past year, an 8-percent rise from a year earlier, according to data released by the administration last Friday.     Hu also noted the positive outlook of China's economy has lessened concerns over a depreciation in the yuan.

BEIJING, May 17 -- Shanghai will step up efforts to lure more talent, beef up development of its legal system and improve its credit database as part of efforts to develop a global financial center, Vice Mayor Tu Guangshao said Saturday.    The city will also enable financial markets and institutions to play an important role in financial innovation and make the Pudong New Area a pioneer for financial reforms, Tu told the Lujiazui Forum in Shanghai.     "To realize our goals, we need a combination of forces," said Tu. "We need guidance and support from the central government in terms of rules' drafting and coordination. We also need financial markets and companies to make contributions." Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said in his tour of the autonomous region on Friday that all available efforts should be mobilized to "win the tough war of maintaining Xinjiang's stability."     The Party's top official in charge of law enforcement stressed that efforts should be made to "resolutely implement" the spirit of the Political Bureau meeting on Wednesday night, and use "tough measures" to ensure stability.     President Hu Jintao on Wednesday night convened a meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to discuss the deadly Xinjiang riot. "Those taking part in the riot due to provocation and deceit by separatists, should be given education."     Hu's stance in handling the riot was echoed by Zhou, one of the nine Political Bureau Standing Committee members, who arrived in the region Thursday afternoon.     Zhou said Thursday that the government and the Party would crack down hard on violence, severely punish the outlaws in accordance with the law, so as to protect the lives and property of people of all ethnic groups, safeguard ethnic unity and restore normal social order in the region as soon as possible.     The country's top police officer Meng Jianzhu was the first senior official from the central government to arrive in the Xinjiang region.     When visiting residents injured by the rioters and family members of those victims in Urumqi on Wednesday, the state councilor and public security minister urged "no leniency in the punishment of thugs who took part in the Urumqi riot".     Meng said leading rioters should be punished "with the utmost severity" and those taking part in the riot, who were provoked and cheated by separatists, should be given persuasion and education.     "All the thugs in the riot should be severely punished in accordance with law, otherwise we will let the victims and their relatives down," Meng repeated his comment on Thursday while visiting residents in Urumqi and a funeral parlor to mourn the Armed Police and other victims of the riot.     Senior Chinese leader He Guoqiang also stressed social harmony and stability on Wednesday.     He, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a two-day visit to Gansu Province, which neighbors Xinjiang.     "The recent violence in Urumqi... has again alerted us to the importance of social stability. BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of China's manufacturing sector stood at 53.2 percent in June, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) said Wednesday.     The figure was up 0.1 percentage points from May, when the index fell 0.4 percentage points from the previous month.     A reading of above 50 suggests expansion, while below 50 indicates contraction.     The PMI includes a package of indices that measure economic performance. The survey, conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics, covers purchasing and supply managers at more than 700 firms across China.     The output index was 57.1 percent, up 0.2 percentage points from a month ago. The new order index fell to 55.5 percent from 56.2 percent in May and 56.6 percent in April.     The purchasing price index climbed 4.7 percentage points to 57.8 percent, the seventh monthly increase since December.

BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese banks have been active in transacting yuan cross-border settlement after the first deal was made Monday.     The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) said Tuesday it had dealt with yuan cross-border settlement totaling 17 million yuan (2.49 million U.S. dollars) in two days.     Many banks in Guangdong Province were active in dealing with yuan cross-border settlement. The Bank of China Guangdong branch transacted yuan cross-border settlement totaling 7.96 million yuan (1.17 million U.S. dollars) Tuesday.     "Guangdong Province has a large economic scale and is highly dependent on foreign trade. Yuan cross-border settlement could help enterprises avert exchange rate risks and reduce costs," said Cao Licong, deputy governor of the BOC Guangdong branch.     "The service is favored by enterprises and will be promising in the future," said Hu Ye, deputy governor of the ICBC Guangdong branch.     China launched its first yuan cross-border settlement Monday.     China's State Council, or Cabinet, announced in April a pilot program to allow exporters and importers in Shanghai, and southern Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan cities to settle cross-border trade deals in Renminbi (RMB), or yuan.     China last week issued detailed regulations for the pilot program for cross-border trade settled in yuan. The rules specified how to make transactions using yuan to settle trade with Hong Kong and Macao and regional trade partners.
